MEMPHIS, Ten n.—
Search continued Monday
for bodies of twenty vic
tims, still unrecovered
from the wreck, of the
government stSaiher Nor
man, which went down in
sixty feet of water in the
Mississippi river late Fri
day with loss of twenty-
three lives. ]
Divers made sevreal attempts
to reach the wreck but failed.
The current is so swift at the
point where the boat went down
that the divers were swept down-
streamed and were hauled back
with difficulty.
A huge anchor was brought
into play Monday to wreck the
cabins of the Norman. Most of
the dead were believed trapped
inside tho cabins which, when,
broken up, will altow the bodies
to come to the surface. I
Meanwhile a fleet of govern- j
ment boats are combing the river
bank in the belief that the bodies I
may have drifted far down
stream.
Various theories as to what
caused the wreck were discussed
bjl river men. One, generally
accepted, was that the oil tank of
the boat may have caused the
disaster. Oil, they said, could
have sloshed about in the Nor
man’s empty tanks in such a
way as to cause it to list and
