We looked up from outwork, expect
ing to see a hardened outlaw, girdled
with pistols aud bowie-knives, standing

a smiling face, cleanly shaved with the
exception of a heavy blark mustache

mer, well-to-do in the world, and per

Ami this wras the famous Joe Thur
mond, an account of whose daring es
cape from the sheriff of Clarke county
had se recently startled the state, and
caused a thrill of applause to pass
through the system of mil as they read
of how a man braved death sooner than
meet disgrace.
We motioned ear visitor to a seat, and
after a few common-place remarks
broached the subject of his escape.
Without a moment’s hesitation he gave
us the following account of his career
from the time Chat he took leg bail ontil
his voluntary surrender:
"I had no idea of attempting an *-*-
cape," he began, "when I was carried
from the jail to the court-house, but hail
determined to die sooner than go to the
penitentiary. But while sitting in my
cliair in Judge Jackson’s office a sudden

moment or count the probable cost I

On Saturday night before the elec
tion, on the farm of Mr. berry Boatwick,
in Morgan county, a Speer meeting was
held, which ended in s fearful row,

The high compliment just paid Hon.
Allen D. Candler by the peple of the
9th district, in electing him to congress
over the moat gifted stamp speaker in
Georgia, by 2,60t> majority, is bat
just reward for his many virtues. He
w*s raised a poor plow boy, had to
work with his own hands to get money
to go to school. Small in statue and
homely in appearance, he began life
with more disadvantages than most boys
hsve to contertd with. Honesty, fair
deaiing, kindness, energy, perseverance
and courage have been the watchword
