But how ? By using a pure, geuty, yet effi

Mr. EnwAHir Atkinson does not
believe that lire Southern people
can ever he an industrial people.
He said as much when he wrote hi-
pamphlet to prove that Manufactu
res could not succeed in the South
even under the most favorable
auspice*. With r.iw material
whitening al mg the very .waste
weits and wheel p'ts, Mr.Atkinson
contended that cotton factories
could not thrive in this section. Mr.
Atkinson must believe then that
training schools for mnchanics in
the South are shams. What can a
people want with skilled laboters,
when their most favored mill plants
can never amount to an\thing ? Il
the South cannot spin cotton, assur
edly she can never worn iron or
gtind flour? Technological schools
in this bgoighletl section must
be barren ideralitiis, and Mr..Ed
ward \tkinson is doubtless laugh
ing in his sieve over the eflort of
this unfavored, thrifilcss people
to train thoughtless youths to drive
profitless machinery.
The action ol the City Council
'k^oking toward the purchase of a
town clock is encouraging. We
believe now the clock will be secur

to our business community, who are
now dependent upon the tap of the
college hell or the blowing of the
steam whistles. We trust the com
mittee and the city council will look
at thisimatler in the same lignt.
