He Killed Twenty Five Men.

northwest Arkansas. About six months
ago Middleton, was eaptnrcd in Missouri,
tried and convicted of manslaughter and
sentenced to twenty-one years in the
penitentiary, but before they could de
liver him to tiie penitentitary officers he
escaped :*ud started for Norton county,
this state, his old home. Ho was pur
sued by two officers, who overtook him
a short distant*** tins side of Springfield
an*j called on him to surrender, which he
answered by opening tire on them, kill-
ing*botb of them instantly. A large re-
waid was then offered for him dead or
alive ami a young man named Small, of
Springfield, followed him to Jasper, New
ton county, at which place he overtook
him at a picric. He called on Middleton
to throw up his hands and Middleton at
tempted to draw a weapon and was shot,
lie was a man fifty years old and has
killed over twenty-five men in this and
surrounding counties, liis lawlessness
began during the war, in which he was a
federal bushwhacker, and.since that time
he lies bee 11 a cousin ut terror to the
whole country.
