twelve of his horses, including Eole,

destroyed were valued at $100,000.
General Harrison’s first cousin, Dr.
D. W. Harrison, a homeopathic phy
sician of Baton Rouge, La., will be
the Republican candidate for Congress
in the 8ixth district of Louisiana,
now represented by S. M. Robertson.
... .The longest session of Congress
was 302 days. So far this session has
consumed 278 days. If it continues to
September 13, which is very likely, the
Fiftieth Congress will be the longest
session on record in this country.
$7,761,695, those for the city of Lou.
don amounting te $1,234,535. Con
sidering the enormous expense in the
matter of police and pauperism which
the liquor traffic in the latter city en
tails, there are many persons who
think that the community gets hut
tittle compensation from these fees,
and several of the London newspapers
are now advocating adoption of tbe
high license system which is in use
in some of oar own communities. The
recent attempt, however, to compen
sate publicans whose licenses might
lie rejected, which was a feature of the
English Local Government bill, al
though afterward withdrawn, shows
what a factor the liquor interest is in
British local politics, and there is not
ranch likelihood of the American sys
tem at present meeting with favor in
England.—Philadelphia Record.

The farmers of Wilkes county meet
today to disensa the bagging question.
The high price asked for bagging is
- causing the farmers to look about for
a substitute for that article, and adopt
measures to break down the trust.
If returned, Hon. John I. Davidson
will probably be the' president of the
Senate—otherwise the place will lie
between Fleming daBignon, of Savan
nah, C. B. Woottei*., of Albany and
Judge John I. Hall, of Griffin, with
the odds in favor of the first named.
Chairman Brice, of the Democratic

The recent meeting of the Farmers’
Alliance convention in Macon was

delegates was paid out of the general
treasury of the Alliance. It is claimed
by some that the Alliance will name
the next governor of Georgia.
