The Dickens party Friday evening at
the residence of Mrs. M. A. Lipscomb on
Millcdge avenue, was a brilliant success.
It was opened by one of “the old ladies”
in a few touching'remarks on Dickens.
One passage so true and to the life, ling-
era in our ears: “The dear, kindly faco
and kindlier heart of Charles Dickens 1 ns
a charm in every household; a friend by
every hearth stone.” Bos, himself (Bry-
au O. Collier,) iu a most pathetic nr.d
beautiful address, called up from the
past those inimitable characters which
nave charmed so many of onr homeol
from childhood up. Then came two
vivi l and charming scenes from Nicolas
Ntukley. This scene showed great
dramatic power. Next was David Cop-1
pcrfield and his darling little Dora. The
dirling herself could uot have been
more beautiful than our fair debutante,
nor tho original David more saturated in
love than our handsome young towns*
man. The closing bceno was M r. Quilp s
party given in tbo absence of her liege*
ord. Each 0 3e su-‘ainod his part ad
mirably. The dresses were handsome,
antique and characteristic. As for old
iQuilp, the character was perfect, and!
all parts were ekilfully sustained. 1
* The supper served during the even*
ing was delightful. Mias Lamar Ruther
ford exquisitely rendeied the music fori
the occasion. The young people of]
J Athens are greatly indebted to Mrs. [
Lipscomb and her accomplished daugh
ter for an elegant evening.
