OUR EASTER CELEBRATION.
To-day we celebrate the oldest of all
festivals. For long before the Great
Payspring from on high visited this
world from the little rock-hewn cavern
under the hill-side of Bethlehem-
Ephrntnh, possibly long before the in
stitution of the Jewish passover, the
heathen races of the world at this
season held a feast to that deity of the
dame, which the Greeks worshipped
later under the name of Eos, or Easter,
and which has impressed its name
upon our great Christian festival.
As Easter is suggestive of light and
happiness in the religious world—that
light and happiness which is the more
enjoyable by.Reason of the preceding
days of humiliation and fasting-—so
in the material world its suggestions
are much the same. It announces
that the dark days of winter have
spent themselves, that spring is at our
doors, and that a season of joy and
gladness, furnishing us with additional
stimulus for the work of the new year,
has dawned.
All hail, then, joyous Easter, mother
of all festivals, second in rank to none
but Christmas herself, and second then
by only little else than courtesy.
From wherever Christianity has spread
itself, from wherever Christians are
to-day found—no matter in what re
mote part of the earth—there will rise
heaveuwards ,tlio oft-repeated and
• heartily appreciative cry “The Lord is
Risen Indeed. 0
AT HIS OLD TRICKS.
The Commercial Gazette of Cincin
nati, the notoriously pronounced foe
of tho South and everything southern,
* and whoso editor’s bruins are forever
busy in hatching aomo libellous state
ment or another about us, has this to
say in a recent number:
“One half of the population of those
states—viz: South Carolina, Georgia,
Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana—
is black, and they will not be allowed
to cast ono effective vote for the next
Presidential candidate of the Repub
lican party. Thoy are bound in a
despotism of assassination . and fraud
to be Democrats. The white people
of those states vote for themselves and
for the blacks.”
Such statements as these have been
Ǥo frequently controverted that any
notice of them whatever tends to rob a
3 newspaper of that freshness which, as
a newspaper, is its due. Every sane
person, north and south alike, knows
that there is not ono particle of truth
in them, and no notice of them would
be taken at all, were it not for the
temporary gratification it affimla frail
mortals of occasionally dubbing the
editor oflhe lying rag, in which they
appear, a translucent ass—and a runt
asa at that.
“Never,” said tho Father of Lies to
Dr. Fauatus, “can man accuse me of
having persuaded him that a bod ac
tion is a good one.” Never could
there be any one insane enough to be
lieve that one iota of truth could un*
derlie the most solemn oath of the
editor of the Commercial Gazette.
It is expected that the tatiflLbill
will be reported in Congress almost
immediately. The measure ]• teadi-
ly growing s stronger. Hut instead
of being stiff necked and irreconcila
ble at its brighter prospects, the
friends of the bill express themselves
willing to modify it in some not very
material particulars, if by such a
modification, its cause shall be
strengthened. Such action is highly
commendable.
Granted that the state neglects her
volunteer soldiery, an annual encamp
ment, such as is suggested to be held
at St. Simon’s Island, would do no
harm to the various companies—in
fact, would go far to remove the impu
tation of neglect. The Governor
shows wisdom in favoring the scheme.
More than 6000 northern oxcusion-
ists are now in the South, most of
them being persons of great wealth.
Thus does the dear old land stand a
good chance of becoming tetter known
and more highly appreciated than
fcver before.
More trouble appears to be brewing
among railroad men in Chicago. And
while all this fussing is going on, the
commercial interests of that city are
coming off second best.

JUSTICE WAITE'S SUCCESSOR.
Pressure is being brought to bear
upon the President—so the New York
Tribune alleges—to defer the nomi
nation . of a successor to the dead
Chief Justice, on tho ground that our
intensely partisan Senate would post

it is hardly probable that they would
give the Democrats the political cap

sumption by them of the attitude as
cribed to them.
Still the fact remains that Republi
can Senators would undoubtedly
bv far prefer that the nomination to
the Chief Justiceship be postponed
until after tho election; as they still
hold that the next occapant
