LONG HAIR, KISSING AND MOUS
TACHES IN RELIGION.
At the National German Baptist
Conference held last week at Wabash,
2nd., a request was made “that breth
ren who wear full beards trim their
moustaches, so that the salutation of
the holy kiss may not he attended
with unpleasantness.”
A kiss between a child and a parent
may have a certain tinge of holiness
about it, as may also hare a kiss be
tween a devoted wife and husband, or
a loving brother and sister, while a
kiss impressed upon the lips of some
dear one cold and still m death ts a
kiss unquestionably holy.
But in the eyes of the cold, practi
cal world of to-day, there is precious
little holiness in all other kissing.
This is evidently the opinion that jo
vailed in the Conference referred to,
and the proposed change was opposed
by a large majority of the members
on the ground that “man is made in
the image of God, and His work
should not be interfered with.”
The question of the decency—or
otherwise—of the wearing of loifg
hair by preachers next came up, and
after some breezy discussion it wan
decided that the membors of the con
vention take advantage of the scrip
tural teaching relating to the Apos
tie’s declaration, that “it is a shame
for a man to wear loug hair.”
We by no means deprecate the cus
tom of kissing, and venture the opin
ion that the fair kissed do not object
to : the kisser having n nice moustache.
A sweet kiss stolen after a Sunday
nights’ service, is to an outsider, an
exceedingly enjoyable affair, hut the
preacher should surtdv have a soul
above committing the theft. He
should leave that for some renegade
son of his spiritual family to do. As
a rule, we believe, ladies do not go to
church to he kissed at all—particu
larly by the preacher—and the pastor
who dispenses “holy kisses” to the
ewe lambs of his Hock should have his
idace among the Free Lovers or the
Mormons rather than among ortho-
bourse, a perfect
right to wear his hair of whatsoever
longth may the best suit his taste;
but he can scarcely afford to ignore
the injunction of so thoroughly well
informed an authority as St. Paul,
who brands it a disgrace for a man tc
wear long huir. Viewed from a stand
point of cleanliness alone, a short
“crop” is far preferable to a mass of
mangey, greasy, ringlets dangling
around a man’s shirt collar, and sug
gestive of his being:—
“Mousey. frowsy, drowsy

COLLEGE GRADUATES AS NEWSPAPER
MEN.
In noting the fact that Cornell Uni
versity has established a school of
“journalism,” the Augusta Chronicle
says:—
“This is,an admirable idea.* While
the best practical school is the news
office itself, there are many important
things relating to journalism which
could be taught to great advantage by
an accomplished and practical man
before a collage class. There ar
less than a dozen boys in Athens to
day, students of the State University,
who write for papers and are anxious
to become news men and editors.
Give these boys a good training and
put them in a good office to learn the
technique and details, and they may
be relied upon to work up.”
This is well put. A university,
per se, cannot teach “journalism ’—
presume that this word, being in
terpreted, means “newspaper work.”
This fact is evidenced by the misera
ble apologies for “journalism” the
majority of college papers are. Col
lege students usually aspire to he pro
found, and a profound newspaper usu
ally dies in a week.
A well equipped newspaper man
must ever stand ready to write up in
readable style and at a minute’s notice
anything from a dog fight on the
street to an essay upon the transit of
Venus. To him education is of course
an essential—college education, if you
please. But this education is imprac
ticable unless supplemented by some
of that promptness and versatility
which are only acquired amid the
click of the type, the rattle of tho gal
leys, the roar of the press, and, by <
tact with all sorts and conditions of
men—from the very lowest to the
very highest, with all of whom he
Must feel perfectly at his ease.
As with a poet, so with the true
newspaper man—’tin a case of noscitur
non fit. You cannot grind him out
of a college like doctors, lawyers and
other professional men are ground
forth. Largo experience may make
—nay frequently does make—a fair
newspaper man out of a college grad
uate; hut as a rule your editors and
reporters are the outcome of a unique
species of evolution, and in confirma
tion of this statement lay hold of some
encyclopedia of biography and read
the lives of the world’s greatest news
paper men.
