Tha spirit of improvement is rife in
the city, and iu seen in various direc
tion*.
The candidates for municipal of
fices keep steadily at work, and are
putting in their best licks.
The old livery stable on the corn

siren'. is to give place to a handsome
cottage.
Quite a number of citizens iorgot
to legister until it was too late, and
they are disfrarchised till next year.
Take time by the forelock, gentlemen.
Many farmers are taking the idea
that there will be a great advance in
cotton next spring and are holding as
much of their crops as they can.
The approaching election creates
little interest with the mass of the
people. Candidates are working very
quietly and it is hard to forecast the
result.^
The piles ot cotton which have
blockaded some oi the streets tor two
or three weeks, are rapidly diminish
ing since the N ertheastern received
plenty ot cars.
Hon. Emory Speer has had several
cases during the present term ot the
court and we are glad to notice that
his public duties have destroyed none
of his ability and acumen as a lawyer.

Caught Stealing Cotton.
Yesterday morning early, a colored
man named John Montgomery caught
two little negro boys stealing cotton
from Reaves, Nicholson «fc Co.’s
Considerable cotton belonging to
that firm was on the street by their
warehouse, and it was from this that
the theft was made. They had
bag full, and it was learned on inves
tigation that they had a large lot of
cotton stored in a house at the old
cemetery. Doubtlers a great deal of
cotton is stolen in this way. All per
sons should be very careful how they
buy loose cotton. The two litile ne
groes w< re turned over to the police,
and imprisoned.

A Good Showing.
The Northeastern railroad is doing
a splendid business. Tho passenger
department shows that for November
the business exceeded any previous
month in its history, and the travel
is so great that there is good reason
tt> believe it will continue to increase.
In the freight department since the
road has been able to get all the cars
it needs, th-i business has been very
large, keeping every employe busy
the whole time. On Thursday four
teen cars loaded with 600 bales of
cotton were sent out and every day
witnesses about the eame thing. Supt.
Bernard tells u* that the road keeps
a number of care lor use between the
stations alone, nnd every day about
six of them loaded with cotton are
brought to Athens from one or an
other of these stations. Here it is
sold, compressed and reshipped
Other freight is also carried in large
quantities, and the read is not only on

To the southern visitor, especially,
A ht tho Exposition the operation of
spooling cotton, the intricate
and marveions machinery ased,
and the busy and skiUfnl opera
tives at work in the various depart
ments, is a thing which never fails to
attract their undivided attention.
Passing through the main building
trum west to east, immediate beyond
the exhibit of the State Department at
Washington, which is located on a
portion of tbe space originally donated
hy them, is the display of tbe Messrs.
Coats, framed in by the most elegact
spool cotton sign in the Exposition. It
is composed of 16,000 spools, of 200
separate colors, embracing the latest
ombre, and other fancy shades. Tbe
frames are richly molded, with plate-
glass coverings, and the spool-work is
of very artistic design and finish. The
exhibit covers an area of 30 by 60 feet,
and is furnished,in addition to the ma
chinery, with raised seats at one ex
tremity for the comfort of visitors, who
can thus enjoy their ease while they
are being entertained by tiie various
processes there presented. All the ma-
chines are automatic and labor-sav
ing, Tbe first is the skein spooler,
which winds the thread from banks
on to large bobbins, from which it is
taken to the winding machines, which
transfer exactly 200 yards to the
spool, and is then ready to repeat the
same operation. From here it is tak
en to the ticketing machine, an ingen
ious automatic arrangment, probably
the most interesting of all tho various
operations. This machine cuts the lit.
tie circular labels from large sheets
and paste and places them firmly on
either end of the spool. The goods
are then removed to the packing ta
ble, where otter operatives are at
work in full view oi the public, making
paper boxes, some of them holding
full dozens and others single spools,
the latter to be given to lady visitors.
All of the machines used, which have
at other Expositions taken the highest
medals, are inventions of Mr. Heze-
kiah Conant, who is very prominently
connected with the American millu of
Messrs. J. & P. Coats.
At another table two sewing ma
