Climatic Influence of Korth
Georgia.
Athens, Ga , June 1st, 1878.
l>r. II. I*. Gatciieli, Mount Airy:
Dear Sir—Having read with much
interest your articles in the “Head
Light." and learning that you are still
j,ro . i iting your investigations rela
tive to the climatic influence of'North
(ieorgia upon pulmonary disease, and
such other advantages incident to
this section of country which would j
tend to the prolongation ofliieaml the j
;cnc.ul amelioration tf human ail
ments, I most respectfully and j
earnestly request an article from your
pen, for publication in the “ South-
krs Banner.” Should you honor!
my paper with such a communication
l am satisfied it would prove both
interesting and instructive to my
readers, as well as lend in some
.degree to the most important enter*
[■rises which has so enlisted your
talent, time and energies. In some
connection,' if desirable, I would sug
gest, at least, some such general ideas
iu regard to the varied interests of
upper Georgia as your hotter judge
ment and more extended experience
might indicate. Trusting that through
your courtesy I may become an hum-
>le instrument for the distribution
d the scientific facts which your stay-
in this section has brought forth, tor
’.he good of mankind generally, and
particularly tor those whose homes
| arc here to be found.
I am most respectfully and truly
f »our obedient servant.

M r. Airy, Ga., June 3d, 1878.
Dr. 11. 11 Carlton,
Editor Southern Banner: Dear
Sir—Your courteous note was duly
; received, and it is with sincere regret
! that I say, in consequence of being
about to set out for Highlands in
j North Carolina, that I have not time
j to reply as the note and the subject
1 deserve.
I can only say, regarding the
•^country in general, that it has folly
net my expectations both ns to
aicturesqueness and salubrity. I have
oo, everywhere inet with evidences
if good order and returning prosperi-
| v. It is in my judgement the most
desirable region to reside in to be
libund in the entire country. It
> nerits all the enthusiasm that Prof.
1 Richards and family, formerly rcsi-
i dents in your pleasant city, manifest
is regard to it. But I should be
gtlgrateful if I did not devote the
few minutes that I have to spare, to
some account of Mount Airy; since
to many of your readers this beauti-
! ful spot may be comparatively un-
known.
It is situated at the highest point
cn the Air Line road, at an altitude
of 1000 feet, the surface of the ground
being more than 100 feet above the
roof of the court house at Clarksville,
rearly above that of tbo College at
Dahlonega and a few feet below that
<f the court house at Cleveland.
The hotel itself commands an ex*
vedingly fine view of the Blue
I ge, only inferior to that from the
hboring hills. The view from
ndview peak is panoramic and
ily equaled. It is the admiration
Arsons who have traveled exten-
,q#ely in America and Europe.
ThiS^country around abounds in
Pleasant/ places for rambling and in
P»oerp^ springs for those who wish to
vink their waters.
When we arrivek on the 3d of last
’jjvcmher, tho hotel was unfinished,
lying in it was very much like
Ling out of doors. But after trav*
mg from Atlanta to Gainesville, I
Voided to remain at Mt. Airy; and
either myself nor the company with
! -e ever had reason to regret my
•icision. Indeed* we often had
^.casion to remark how fast the
'vBter was gliding away. Muoh of
■e contentment was due to the evi-
bit effort of Col. Wilcox, our land*
to do all in his power to make
*r stay pleasant. His constant
glance, his kindly, genial manner
l his unremitting efforts for our
mforl made us at home, if wc
urnhled about incouvoniences inci-
i dent to the newness of his enterprise
and ihe unfinished slate of the house.
And now when h:* is finishing his
house in metropolitan stylej I look
back with a kind of longing to ilie
rudeness of last winter and wouder
whether niv patients and I will enjoy
ourselves equally another winter in
the completed house. Certainly in
valids of the same class can -never
improve faster than did the great
majority of those under my care at
Mt. Airy. Long may it flourish, and
summer aiyl winter may the genial
landlord find people flowing into his
j house and money into his safe.
Begging you to excuse on account
J of the circumstances under which it
! was written, the imperfect ness of my
reply.
I remain very respectfully yours.

My Dear Dr. Gatciieli..—I wish
I had to-day the intimate acquaint
ance with honorable and excellent
men in dear old Georgia that I had a
quarter of a century ago, for then I
could hope that this letter (on which
I congratulate Georgia upon your re
moval to its territory) would be of
service to you, which it cannot possi
bly be, in view of the forgetfulness
which death and time and circum
stances have conspired to throw
around my name, spoken now in the
homes and haunts of the Sunny
South, I loved and frequented. There
are, however, still those in positions
of honor and trust and influence who
have not quite forgotten nie. If you
meet any of these I hope they will
knotv how much I esteem and honor
you for your personal w’orth of na
ture and education, and for your long
and high professional renown as a
physician, and notably as a specialist
in the knowledge and treatment of
that insidious disease, consumption.
Most heartily do I wish, my dear
Doctor, that your experience, your
skill, your kindness in all clinical ser
vice may come to he appreciated in
my dear old home, the uoble State
of Georgia as it is in Illinois, and es
pecially it is by
