I)r. Carlton :—Please return niy
thanks to Mr. James P- Phillips, for
his kindness in answering my queries
in a previous No. of the Banner
concerning a plow he had mentioned
in the same paper.
His answers are so satisfactory that
I feel inclined to ask more questions
but as the plow is so costly and
would probably not perform well on
my rocky, rolling plantation I will
desist and remember tbe adage
*i Don’t ride a good horse to death.”
Without intimating any doubt as
to wbat Mr. Phillips says about his
plow, I au^ prepared to say theie u
much truth in what he says ab. ut
improved implements. I am using
two donble-footel plows successfully;
one a wooden stock throughout
except rods and other necessary irons,
the oth ?r I call “ my brace of coul
ters.” I think it impossible to real*
ize heavy crops as a general thing in
a few years; the thing can be done
only by gradual manuring and a
gradual deepening cf tbe soil and
until these things are done we must
expect to make but light yields
(except on our special patches) and it
is the more necessary to have im-
Droved implements so as to cultivate
more land to the hand and that more
thoroughly in order that such yields
- may pay. Respectfully,
Plodder.

Farmers who have sheep—and
all ought to have them—should
watch them closely at this season of
the year. Disease may spread very
rapidly. If they appear to have a
cold in the head, or a cough, lose no
time in giving them a coat of tar.
Salt frequently, mixing a little
rosin with the atilt This is good
for them sick or well. Ewes raising
lambs need pure water; as general
thing the dew is sufficient for sheep,
but when nursing it is not, and they
will likely become diseased it they
have not a supply. If your sheep
are afflicted with hoof disease, lose
no time in preparing them for the
kuife. It can be cured, but the
trouble is greater than the worth of
the sheep. If you wish to try to
make a cure, pare the hoof closely,
and stand the foot for one minute
in a strong solution of blue vitriol,
and repeat this tntil a cure is
effected. When you have cured
one you will likely not attempt
another.

Liver is King.
The Liver is the imperial organ of
the whole human system, as it con
trols the life, health and happiness of
man. When it is disturbed in its
proper action, all kinds of ailments
are the natural result. The digestion
ot food, the movements of the heart
and blood, the action of the brain
and nervous system, are all immedi
ately connected with the working of
the Liver. It has been successfully
proved that Green’s August Flower
is unequalled in curing all persons at-
flicted with Dyspepsia or Liver Com
plaint, and all the numerous symp
toms that result from an unhealthy
condition of the Liver and Stomach.

NEARLY ALL BASING POWDERS
ARE ADULTERATED.
The wily manufacturers of these spuriouf
compounds claim that, adulteration is
necessary to the preservation of the

of this. On the contrary, the good
qualities of any Baking Powder
are lessened and the injurious
elements increased just in pro
portion to the adulteration.

can produce an injurious effect.. On the con
trary, it-has in itself a tendency to sustain
lift and strengthen the human system.

adds greatly to the perplexing difficulties with
which the housekeeper lias to contend in the
attempt to produce good bread by the use of

of any of these articles is used, the bread has
a sour or rank, bitter taste, or is heavy and
soggy, unpalatable, and indigestible. With the

Ploughing green crop3 into the
ground to act as a manure was long
practiced by the ancient Romans,
and in Italy and in many other coun
tries where the soil and climate are
favorable. This mode of fertilizing is
especially suited to warm countries
where vegetation is rapid and luxuri
ous. In the Southern countries of
Europe the harvest is early and the
crops removed in time sufficient t«>
allow the maturity of the green plant
the same season. *
The object of the mulching is two
fold—first, to retain moisture in the
ground and prevent it from being
parched by summer heat; second,
to protect the roots of vegetables
from the severe frosts of winter.
The best materials for mulching are
tan-bark, saw-dust—or better still,
charcoal dust—leaves, straw', to any
light porous substance which will
keep the soil loose and moist. By
proper mulching w'e have seen pota
toes, peas, beans, cabbages, onions
and other valuables maintain their
growth through the driest summer.
