SOUTHERN BANNER. AU<[JST <i, 1878.
4 ion nine French Love Story
riiu wedding couples presented
,!:emsdves at the Mayoralty in a
suburb of Palis to carry out the civil
portion of their marriage contract.
I licy ranged themselves on opposite
salt s <>t the Mayors official throne,
•rid I'iced one another. The Mayor
was asking a question as one of the
bridegrooms, whose attention was
thus distracted from Ins biide. On
turning round to look at her when
ue had answered the question, lie
caught her making “ sheep's eyes ’*
this brideg ooin opposite. Being of
a jealous temperament, he laid his
hand roughly on her arm and said,
sharply:
“ Mademoiselle, which of the two
brides are you ? You are mine, I
believe; then oblige me by confining
your glances to me.”
The bride was a young woman of
spirit, and, resenting the tone in
which the reprimand was made, re
torted :
“ Ah, Monsieur, if you arc jealous
already, I am likely to lead a pleas
ant life with you.”
The jealous bridegroom made an
angry reply, and then the other
bridegroom must needs put his oar
in :
“ Pah ! Mousieur, why should you
make such a fuss because Mademoi
selle chooses to favor me with a
glance ?”
Thereat his bride turned savagely
upon him and exclaimed :
“IIn, Monsieur, it would seem,
then, that you like to have ladies
make eyes at you! Now I know
what to expect from you ; but you
might at least have had the descency
to keep this proof of your faithfulness
concealed from me here.’’
And with ihis fierce thrust she
burst into tears. In vain the Mayor
attempted to pacify both parties,
n.e bridegrooms stormed at
each oilier, and the brides, between
their hysterica! sobs, mutually ac
cuse I each oilu-i of pirfidy. What
was to be done ? At last the Mayor,
losing ten.per, cried out :
Am I to proceed with this cere
mony or am I not ?
The two brides, with one accord,
screamed :
“ No!”
“ Perhaps,” said the Mayor, whose
wrath had again cooled down, “ you
could arrange matters between your
selves if yon were left alone. The
clerk will show you to my private
room. I will give you half on hour.”
At the expiration of that time the
parties were summoned to appear be-
tbre the Mayor.
“ Have you settled your difficul
ties?” he asked.
‘‘Yes, Monsieur le Maire,” ox-
claimed both bridegrooms at once.
“ Oh, then, I may at once proceed
u I;h the ceremony ?”
‘Yes, Monsieur le Maire; but—
but—
“ Well, what is it?”
“ We have effected a change, Mon
sieur le Maire.”
“ A change! What do you mean?”
‘ ‘ A change of brides Monsieur le
Maire.’’
And so it was—the jealous bride
groom had taken the jealous bride,
and the young lady of the fickle
glances had taken the gentleman
w ho liked ladies to “ make eyes” at
him. The astonished Mayor looked
at them in silent amazement
moment or two, but they met his
look unabashed, so he shrugged his
shoulders and said:
“ Well, it you are satisfied, it is no
business of mine. I will proceed
with the ceremony.’’
And married they were.
A German, who had a dog, turned
around a corner. Tne German im
mediately began to run and calling
his dog. The policeman ran about
fi.teon squares after him, when the
German ran into an out-house. The
policeman asked him to show the
license of his dog. He showed it
up. The policeman then asked him
why he ran so. The German asked
him if he and his dog had not the
right to run in these “ Oonited
Shinies” when they pleased. The
policeman, went "away, but he was
wringing wet with perspiration, and
how "mad!
Mr. Lewis Richmond, United
States counsel at Cork, in his dispatch
of June 27th, 1878, to the Depart
ment of State, gives some informa-
tion as to the state of trade in Ire
land, the rates of wages and cost of
living. Agricultural laborers get 48
cents a day; coal heavers, machinists,
gas fillers and bakers, 81.09; masons,
shoemakers, painters and joiners,
$1.21; oil public works laborers earn
from 48 to 60 cents a day ; on the
railways, conductors receive §4.38 to
$7.29 per week ; engineers, $1.21 to
$1.70 per day. Last summer the
railway employes struck for an ad
vance, but failed. The cost of livin_,
to the laborer and the mechanic is
about $85 jter annum. Trade is
much depressed, with many failures.

A correspondent of the Golos
speaks of tho rough tone in which
Bismarck addressed the Turkish rep

We are here for the interests of
Europe, for the peace of Europe.

Gen. Myers’ explanation of the
futility of the heat in St. Louis is
clear. It is simply this: The city
is situated upon lime rock and dense
ly built.* The rock and the bricks
get heated and make the air hot.
No v, in dry air the perspiration from
the skin will evaporate. But there
.i air is continually moist, and
morelbre does not carry off the stir
plus heat which comes as perspiration
from the body. Besides hot, damp
air is very unhealthy to breathe.

Tin- festive officers and soldiers of
the Russian army, who promenaded
the streets of Constantinople and
filled the drinking saloons, have been
succeeded by the Engljsh of the
neighboring fleet, who conduct them
selves with greater propriety than their
predecessors, but do not spend nearly
so much money. The chief pleasure
excursion of the inhabitants at pres
ent is a visit to the British fleet to
which, through the cordiality of
Admiral Hornby, they are all wel
come.
Prince Bismarck received a rebuff
from an unexpected quarter during
the Congress. It was his custom to
govern the assembly much as a
schoolmaster governs an unruly class.
One day the Turkish Pashas were
conferring in an undertone, when the
Prince couunnnde l silence with a
perenitory “Hush.” A Pasha at
once replied : “ Your Highness, the
representatives of the Sublime Porte
are not here to bear with your ills
humors.”
