We call attention to the action of
the * 'ity Council with reference to in
augurating relief measures for the
vellow icier sufferers in the South
east. We tru.t Athens will not be
le-.ii liberal in her contributions to the
distressed than her neighbor cities.
’!'<> Our MmflianlN.
In view of the importance of Ath-
. ns a.- a trading centre, wo eotcniend
the columns of the Bannkr, now in
iis sixty-second year, to our merchants
as a medium in every way worthy
their advertising patronage. We
have r. large and constantly increas-
ing ci>eolation in Middle, Faslern and
North-rusleru Gctrgia, and our sub-
sciiliers look to the columns of our pa-
pci to sic where they can obtain bnr-
■_ ;iins. Every business enterprise in
tin city should be represented in our
adverti- ng col'imns.
I'crsunnl.
Our fri ml, Mr. A. II. I-ane. who
has been spending some weeks with
his friends and relatives 'in Madison
county, leaves to-day for his business
home in Savannah Mr. Lane has
been \'i ry active with his business
friends in this section of the country,
in trying to secure shipments of cot
ton trom this point to Savannah, via
Centra! Railroad. No doubt his ef
forts will lie largely rewarded, and
Savannah, the Central Railroad and
es|iecially his business house, realize
the advantages of his active labors.
< n ill 1..at to Cotton Planters.
We don’t know that our merchants
have or intend to buy straw Sr' grass
bagging for cotton, but we feel it due
our fanning renders to inform them
that the cotton exchanges of the cities
from Savannah to New York have des
clued against this class of bagging
because it is not adapted to use, and
■ positive damage to cotton. Furs
.iiorinore, circulars were sent out from
iliesc cotton marts addressed to buys
or? and planters, making known this
decision, and notifying parties at in-
tere-l, that cotton brought to market
in Mich bagging would not command
tlie lull market price.

The prospect for a heavy fall busi
ness was never better, and why?
As a general thing the seasons have
been propitions and the crops i n the
thirty or forty counties that trade at
Athens are good. For several years
past Athens has been gradually ad
ding to her mercantile territory until
now’ she is the rival of Augusta aud
Atlanta. Mauy causes might be as
signed for this flattering condition of
affairs. We have enterprising mer
chants. We have unlimited resident
capital. We are the centre of a large
and wealthy farming and manufactu
ring section. We have competing
freight lines which enable our mer
chants to lay their goods down at as
little cost as those of Augusta or At
lanta Heretofore, we have lacked
storage room for the products of the
farm that naturally sought our mar
ket and for storing the gooda that
could have been sold had they been on
hand. These deficiencies have been
supplied during the summer by the
erection of immense ware-houses and
magnificent stores. Our merchants
are preparing for a large jobbing ae
well as retail trade, and we havn't a
doubt that with their facilities they
can compete with any city in the
State.
We trust our farmer friends in the
more remote counties may at least give
Athens a trial and compare our prices
for produce and merchandise with the
prices of other cities.

Mrs. J. A. Crawford will, on the
1st Monday in September, open at her
residence a select school for boys nnd
girls. This is a fine opjiorl unity for
those who desire to enter their little
Ixiys or girls in a real first-class pri
mary school. Those friends who de
sire to patronize Mrs. Crawford are
requested to enter their children at
ouee, as the time for opening the school
is near at hand. Mrs. Crawford also
desires a class of some six or eight
boys, between the ages ol twelve aud
fourteen, which she will instruct in the
languages ; also in mathematics, this
being a specialty with her. If her
school demands it a competent assis
tant will be secured so as to make hers,
in every respect, a real first-class pri
mary and preparatory school.

Little Ida P.eod!
She was a sweet tiny girl: many there he;
And *'of such is the Kingdom of Hen wen."
In her dawn of life the light awoke her
Before the birds; and she would gently coo
While still the fiunily slept-»lullaby! .
To me a mystery — to all a charm.
In an upper chamber I beard that coo;
Anon I teemed to dream she was in Heaven:
How the Is dead, it surely must be true!
The light has come, but sorrow makes me deaf;
The Perfect Day will come, then I shall hear.
In her prattling years
We oft together sought the Beautiful;
And she could tell me what I wondered at;
Only at that—which she could teU me now.
She studied pictures In the beads of dew ;
Kissed the opening flowers, and cried when they
died;
laughed at sunbeams through the trees, caught
at them;
lPtu clouds and dark shaded her sunny scene*.
At her sweet call the birds were not afraid ;
And oft would perch above her head and sing.
She learned to tell me stories from her books ;
But best ©fall she read between the lines.
And this she aald God told her while she slept.
* • ° She is sn angel!
God tella her story in the Book of Life;
Doves of Celestia circle around her head ;
The Sun of Righteousness lights all her way ;
Its light has wake^her heart, and no night more!
flowers kiss her there *s she kissed them hero;
Her pictures in the dew were Heavenly scenes !
The Beautiful has sought her once for ail!
Her cooing was assent to Angels’ talk;
bo they now aasaat to her!
Little Ida Reed!
Life's clouds and dark to me are mortal dread ~-
Darkness awakes me, and beneath a moan,
*" O God, be merciful to me a sinner! ”
Could 1 but hear above thy infant voice ;
Could I but dream myself in Heaven with thee;
If at my bid the hauntlug wings would flee,
And leave the light of Live upon my head ;
If at my my touch the flowers would not die.
And show as pictures of man’s fleeting life —
Then would I not wonder What is death—death?
Then I could read between the lines. But now!

Of ocean atood, way-worn, heart-sore:
And while he thought to drown Ids woe,
And end his grief, the waves below—

While they leaped up iu grand display :
“Thou pilgrim bowed with earthly core,

To thee I reach my willing arm,
To bear thee where no raging atortn
