Triumphal arches and columns «j(
enduring brass and marble testify to
the worhj of to-day of the greatness
and benefactions of the past. But
they tench, if possible, of a higher
lesson. They tench that those who
shared the greatness appreciated the
privilege of having iived in that age;
and those who were the recipients of
benefactions heldintheir hearts the
profoundest gratitude. Thus these
voiceless yet speaking monuments
make known to us of those who have
gone before us. and we, in one voice
of praise, join the grand age with the
people who lived theu, and the bene
factions with tlm recipients. These
feelings are instinctive ,and irrepressi
ble and a failure to testify our appre
ciation of great and noble deeds shall
make the historiau of the present our
accuser. Great medical discoveries
are just as deserving these evidences
of admiration as the grandest achieve
ments of the past. Harvey and .Ten
ner ...id a hundred others demand
at the hand of the world as lasting
remembrance as the victories of Na
poleon, or the field of Waterloo The
initiative should lie taken by those
who shared the glories or partook of
the benefit. If they fail in this their
highest duty, history ought and will
deprive them of plnces on the roll of
honor. There lives no physician who
lias not often had occasion to bless the
discoverer ot Anesthesia. For my
self I say, that often, ns I have sat
hour by hour by the side of some
great sufferer I have turned a thank
ful heart for this discovery, by which

But upon the medical profession be
has conferred the greatest boon. We
know with a tew ounces of chloroform
or ether we can ssy to pain—“thus
far shalt thou come and no farther.”
We are its absolute master. We owe
this boon to Dr. Crawford W. Long.
This reeds no argument. The gifted
Simms, with uncontrovertible facts,
cheerfully accords to him the honor
ot being the first who “intentionally
produced anesthesia.’’
To testify to the world that we are
uot’ignoraut—tbqt his claims are just
—that we do feel deeply the great
debt of gratitude we owe to our broth
er who has gone before us—that we
rcalizu that his discovery was one of
unequaled splendor—it becomes the
physicians of his native State to attest
their appreciation of his boon an 1
memory, in some substantial manner,
so that those who come after us may
name us with one who was so great a
benefactor. In Boston there stands a
monument to the discoverer of Anes
thesis: but no name is perpetuated
on its marble surface. The citizens o
Hanford have erected a bronze statue
of Wells (by Bartlett) one ot the
claimants, iu the Capital Pa k.
To the Medical Fiaternity of Geor
gia this opportunity is givin of testi
fying to the world their appreciation
of this medical discovery, second only
to vaccination by erecting a monu
ment over the remains of Dr. Craw
ford W. Long.
I would Imre this tribute, just to
him and noble to the profession, par
ticipated in by each physician. Not
through any assoointio.i, but as an
individual recognition of the greatness
of the discovery, anil the debt of
gratitude we owe.
1 only suggest, in conclusion, thatcon-
tributions should be sent to Dr. II. H.
Carlton, the Editor of this paper, who
will, I am sure, endorse, and in all
respects forward this enterprise.
