AMEND THE LAW.
It has Urt eloped that the automo- i
bile law enacted at the extra session I
of the 1915 legislature, making it a
crime to drive an automobile over
Inevitably, sooner or late!
AS THE WIND BLOWS.
Once was a Man In a Sail-boat—
Who. going with the Wind, was
.thirty miles an hour while intoxicated,j ], e |pe ( | n ),.ng; an d, turning against it
fa um-oti tltr.llnnal. The noint ha,:' . .. , . .......
was hindered and troubled—
And so ft Is with all Mpii and the
Law.
—D. O. B.
Is uncoil tltutiona I. The point
been raised by Judge J. K. Hines, at
torney for th» railroad commission, on
tbe grounds that the call Issued by
tbe governor did not Incorporate such
legislation, but that the extra session
was called for a specific purpose and
therefore no Other legislation passed j
at this session, other than that which
was incorporated in the call, would
be legal and those convicted of vio
lating this law will bo granted a new
trial.
This point Is well taken and if the
courts recognize It. there may be sev
eral new trials for those who have
been convicted under its operation.
However, if there Is a technicality in
the measure, then the first legisla
tion passed by the incoming legisla
ture should be to amend and make
strong a stringent measure which will
enable the prosecuting and judicial
officers to enforce such law to the
fullest.
There can be no greater danger to
the traveling public than the maniac
or drunkard driving an automobile! emblem of France,
while under the Intluenco of Intoxl-! 10.—Downing street,
eating beverages. Severe punishment j noted as the official ret
should he meted to all violators of j British Prime Minister,
this law and if there is an irregu
larity or terimk-allty (n the law, let
it be amended without delay.

. PA88ING OF THE HELLO GIRL.
Recent Improvements and new in
vent Ions will soon replace the tele
phone operator by automatic system
of connecting telephones. The tele
phone system has been so Improved
by mechanical devices the subscriber
will be enabled to make his or her
connection without the aid of an oper
ator in the main office.
The invention win save for the tele
phone companies millions of dollars
in operating expenses and the new
aystem will save for the user of tele
phones much time and annoyance In
getting central and other irregulari
ties which are liablo to occur In the
conduct of operating the delicate ap
paratus, as is required in the use of
the telephone.
An automntlc system has been de
vised by which connections can bn
made by the subscriber In all local
exchanges and the only need for oper
ators, so It is stated, <s for toll or
long distance service.
New York Is now installing the new
System and many other larger cities
of the country are engaged In pre
paring for the. Installation of the
mechanical Bystem and soon this ays
tem will be used In every exchange
In the country. It Is said that within
the next five years the “Hello Girl"
will have passed out from the Impor
tant position she now occupies In
the commercial world of this country
and .the services she Is now render
ing will be carried on by the sub
scriber. -WtRI
The change In systems will bo of
more than ordinary Interest and one
Which Is remarkabio in the develop
ment of such service by mechanical
devices. The largo army of young
ladles throughout the nation who now
greet the subscribers with a pleasant
answer will have to seek other em
ployment for a livelihood. But we
may expect such improvements in the
telephone service, as much as in travel
end traffic. A few years ago the elec
tric car was unknown, the automo-
Mle was unknown, the aeroplane was
unknown, hut now we have the use
of the electric car, electric lights and
power, the automobile and the aero
plane. All of which have grown to be
necessities and not luxuries. The
name may be expected In the tele
phone Industry. This is an age of
progress, development and inven
tions—an age of advancement.

T HESE are days of change—of
innovation—of imitation.
It's good to find one thing that hasn't
changed a bit—Piedmont Cigarettes.
The same fine native tobacco, tbe
same lively., appetizing flavor, the same
mellow fragrance that has kept men
smoking Piedmonts, and nothing else, for
so many years—it’s all there. Hasn't
changed a bit.
After all, there's nothing like “down*
home tobacco” for cigarettes.
