NOTES FROM RECENT
“FACTS and FIGURES”
No. 1. Buffalo and Los Angeles has lower wholesale rates
than Athens. A long way from home but Doherty says these
towns have wholesale rates lower than Athens.
No. 2. Seattle on her knees. A long way from home, but
a deplorable condition for any town.
No. 3 Herald yesterday afternoon and Banner yesterday
morning says, Arizona, California, Massachusetts and Illinois
Commissions granted rates on fair return on Investments.
ATHENS’ REPLY TO ABOVE.
No. 1. A little nearer home we find our sister city of Ander
son, S. C., enjoying a lower wholesale rate than Athens.
No. 2. What the use. Let’s don’t discuss it.
No. 3. The Doherty organization would lead one to believe,
by quoting only- a portion of the orders of the railroad commis
sions of these far-a-way states, that the Commissions exist only
for the benefit of the public utilities.
The GEORGIA COMMISSION will handle the unjust and
untimely prayer for increase by Mr. Doherty. The Georgia Com
mission has spoken as follows: i
“It is hereby EXPRESSLY declared that the above increases
are authorized upon the express condition that the same are nec
essary because of emergencies arising out of National conditions
EXISTING AT THIS TIME, and that upon further condition
WHEN THIS EMERGENCY shall have passed, the old rates or
proper modifications thereof, will be made effective, upon proper
order of the Commission.”
There is now a large industry ready to locate in Athens. The
promoters of this industry, says if the rates asked for by Doherty
are granted that it is very doubtful if this industry can possibly
live in Athens.
Another large extension to a present active industry in Ath
ens is being held up on account otf the proposed rates. Some of
the machinery has been purchased, shipment hid up on this ac
count.
The Chamber of Commerce of Athens by a vote of 130 to 9
says we will oppose to the last any increase. The two instances
above are examples of reasons why the Chamber as a body must
oppose any increase.
