'TREASURER.
A\ e find the comity- treasurer’s books
correct aud neatly kept. He has prop
er vouchers for all moneys paid out
and they cheek properly w irh his hooks.
The amount of money on hand, $4,582.-

credit at tlie National Bank of Athens.
Full statement herewith attached. :
PUBLIC PROPERTY.
We have examined the Court House,
Jail, Residence of the jailor and other
houses connected therewith, and find
fitem,all in excellent condition. We
und ttie stalls erected for horses in
court.house yard neatly built and cou
rier Thom a great convenience. We
commend the ordinary for having them
erected.
ORDINARY.
Wc find the Ordinary’s hooks kept
in a correct and most excellent manner.
He has the bonds of all the county offi
cers on file. We investigated each
bond a.id deem the securities sufficient.
.juarictis or Tnk peace and notaries
PUBLIC.
We find their books neatly kept, but
in some instances the judgements ren
dered by said officers are pot signed.
Their items of costs seem to be correct.
We suggest that the said justices be
more accurate in showing on their
dockets the final disposition ofcriu inal
cases, as to whether the defendants
were discharged or bound over to a
higher tribunal. Also in docketing and
filing civil cases the dockets do not
show-the date of filing or of rendering
judgement.
ROADS AND BRIDGES.
We find the roads and bridges in the
county generally in good condition.
CLERK SUPERIOR COURT.
The clerk’s books are most neatly
aud properly arranged, and we further
find that he has added to his collection
a general index book that we think will
prove a great convenience to those seek
ing information in his office.
PAUPER FARM.
The Farm is in good condition, and
has been rented for the coming year on
about same terms as this year. There
are 9 paupers, 5 white and 4 colored.
There are 9 convicts; all colored.
We recommend that the committee

eausing to be taken down, an abstract

tried by them, that same be paid by a
warrant from the Ordinary or the
Treasurer, whieh shall be issued on the
certificate of the Justice that such work
has been rendered.
We recommend that our Representa
tive Hon. Henry C. Tuck take imme
diate steps to withdraw or cause to be
withdrawn and to effectually- kill the
hill known as the Solicitor’s Insolvent
Costs Bill, before the Legislature of
Georgia.
We recommend that the attention of
the city counci : of Athens be called to
the condition of the bridge on Oconee
street over C. & M. Railroad. That
said bridge he so changed as to make
ascent anil decent easier to tlie travel

We recommend the publication of

Wheeling, October 22
About 6 o’clock this evening Charles
Platt,aged fifteen, was deliberately mur

two years older. Platt and a companion
named games Vernon had been out in
the country during the day after wal

On their return they met Mullarky
who had a rifle. He asked to he allow

endeavored to steal some of the nuts.
For this Platt struck him lighty with
his whip. Mullarky then raised his rifle
in a threatening manner and said: ‘ If
you don’t let me in I’ll shoot you.”Platt
' still refused to allow him to ride, when
Mullarky took deliberate aim and shot
