and sheep, the lots contained sleek
stock and the great ears of corn
protruded from the cribs, while
barrels of rich home made flour
were hid away. If a neighbors
meat or corn gave out during tlie
year he could borrow some in the
community.
If the example being set this
year is continued it will not be
long before this state of affairs
will repeat itself in Dooly. We
believe it to be true that a large
cotton crop has been planted.
But along with this is a large crop
of home supplies. Such a wheat
crop as is being harvested now has
not been known in this county for
years and the farmers are casting
about for a wheat mill.
Will not some one provide a
mill for the wheat crop?
If 110 misfortune befalls the hog
crop before next fall, enough meat
will be saved to more than supply
the county. Peas, cane, potatoes
and corn are planted in plenty and
our county is destined to march to
the front again as a county whose
citizens live at home and are per
fectly- independent.

.Tobacco Growing in the South,
There may be a difference of
opinion as to what shall take the
place of the reduced acreage of
‘cotton. It is a palpable fact that
the Southern poople do not grow
enough bread and meat to supply-
home demands, and do not culti
vate corn, oats and hay sufficient
^o maintain their live stock- No
agricultural people can prosper
'who purchase the necessary food
crops to be paid out of the receipts
from cotton at six to seven cents a
pound. As a practical substitute
for cotton Tobacco is strongly rec
oin mended.
The greatjquestion is, will it pay?
.The average yield of pounds of to
bacco in North Carolina, lias been
for ten years 5S0 to 595 pounds
per acre. The average value of
the tobacco crop in that State for
ten years lias been $58.63 per acre.
,The average cost of cultivating
and curing an acre of tobacco is
about double that of an acre of
'cotton, say $20 per acre. The av-
'erage yield of pounds of cotton in
'North Carolina for ten years has
been ISO, the average value per
aero $16.29. This statement is
predicated on cotton when it was
selling at not least than eight to
ten cents per pound.
These figures prove that an acre
of Tobacco in that State brought
the farmer 300 percent more than
an acre of cotton growing States
lias been for the last ton years $15,
'69- The average value of Tobac
co per acre in the seventeen To
bacco growing States for the last
ten years has been $61,51. In the
ten years included in this average
cotton commanded a much higher
price than recently. During the
same decade Tobacco was lower
than at present. Farmers about
Brunswick and throughout this
entire section should turn their

forward along the lines of practi
cal business education. This is
the establishment of a great chain
of business colleges in important
southern cities, the students of
each of which will conduct practi

those of the other by correspond

augurated by Messrs Wyatt and

of the Georgia Business College,

Its improved systems and ex
