of 1620 men women and children
from the Sunday school of St..''Marits

ship wns soon on lire and destroyed
many passengers by flames and
water.

known that 050 are dead; 300
injured; 200 saved and 475
unaccounted for.
The flames rolled on and nniny
perished therein, while hundreds of
them leaped into the water to take
ohanees of swimming to the shore
or being caught itp by the life boats.
Rescuing parties are now search*

The Slocum, one of the largest

Offer to the Afflicted
NEW Y0PK, June 10,-Tbe
loss of life by the burning steamer
Slocum in, the East river yes
terday will approximate one thous
and. This estimate is based on the
opinion of the Are department, of
thfe coroner’s office and of the po
lice.
Atoiic o’clock this afternoon five
hundred and four bodies had been
recovered, of which one hundred and
fifty-five had been identified.
There were reported missing four
hundred and sixty-seven persons and
the hospitals had one hundred and
seventeen tujured.
The fact that ’ twenty-four hours
after the disaster there are still
missing nearly five hundred persons
warrants the belief that the above
estimate of the dead will be verified,
for the authorities have used every
resource ..at their command to locate
all who esoaped.
Mayor McClellan announced this
afiernoon that he had decided to
issue a proclamation askiug for sub
scription for the- burial of the dead
and for such'other immediate relief
as could be given. He said he would
ask ten men of prominence to serve
on a committee to take.oharge of the
fund..
At an informal meeting of luttieran
ministers in the home ot the Rev.
Dr. Haas this morning an appeal to
the ministers of all denominations
to assist in the funeral services of
the general slocum victims was
prepared.
