ANALYSIS FERTILIZERS
Letter of State Chemist Jolin

State Chemist Gives Some Valuable
Information to the' Farmers Regard
ing Fertilizers—Complete' Analysis
•f a Fertilizer.
Now I am in receipt of questions
from several farmers who study the
analyses In the bulletins,, wanting to
know what It Is that manes up the bal
ance Of the one: hundred per cent, in
analysis of a fertilizer like the one
first given which contains:
• • ' Per.Ct.
Available phosphoric acid 8.10
Nitrogen ‘ 2.11
Potash 2.3(1
\
12.03'
What Makes the Hundred Per Cent In
the Analysis of Fertilizers.
They write and say, here you have a
total of twelve and sixty-three hun-
dretlrs per cent., what is the balance
Of eighty-seven and thirty-seven hun
dredths per cent?
.We don’t understand it, and we want
to know wliat this big balance con
sists of. Now there are two ways o!
answering this question; the first is
by giving you the formula according to
Which the goods were made, which was
as you remember, one thousand end
fflfty pounds of. fourteen per east,
acid phosphate, six hundred and fifty
pounds of cotton seed meal containing
six and a half per cent, of httrorm,
and three hundred pounds of kaintfc
containing twelve and a half prr cent,
of potash. Therefore, t' goods In
question will be found, on reducing
these quantities to percentages to bo
compared as follows;
Per.C’t.
Aeld phosphate 52,6
Cotton k jed meal 82.5
Kaiuit 16.0
100.0
There you have your 100 per cent.,
and this Is the mixture which gave the
analysis of 8.16 per cent, available
phosphoric aold, 2.11 per oedt. nitro
gen, and 2.36 per cent, of potash.
There is another way of answering
the questions of those who want to
know what constitutes the elghty-sev-
en and thirty-seven one hundredths
per cent. That way would be to make
a laborious and costly analysis In de
tail of all the various ingredients
found In the aold phosphate, the cotton
seed meal, and the kalnlt.. That anal
ysis, when completed, would only grat
ify your curiosity, beaause the essen
tial elements, which alone are of prac
tical Interest, the available phosphor
ic acid., nitrogen and potash, have al
ready been given. I have, however,
made a complete analysis of a fertil
izer, not the particular one we have
been discussing, but one very similar
to it, made from South Carolina aeld
phosphate, cotton seed meal and kalnlt.
I give you below a copy of thl3 analy
sis, which you will see adds up tho
full one hundred per cent.
"Why is summer culled the silly snn-

"Young Jones is a grout bustler.’’
"I should say so. He can kiss his
girl good night in five minutes.”
The Supreme Test«
"I guess Jenkins Is n man of nerve.”
"No question about It. I saw him
kiss his mother-in-law.”
It depends on who ore the spenders
whether there is the more fun In a
nickel or n five dollar bill.
A atingy man takes a dollar’s worth
of credit In giving a» nickel.
