A melancholy affair took
place on the 24th ult. in Robe
son county. A run-away Afri
can negro of John M'Neily,
i*fq. of Lumberton, called at
the house of Mr. Wm. Harri
son, and in his absence, took
from it a gun, which was hang
ing read*/ loaded with 20 buck
ihor, he nevertheless took down
•a (hot-bag, and put in 20 more
ftaot, and then went off into an
adjoining swamp. When Mr.
Harrifbn returned home, on
‘being informed of the circum
stance, he collected a couple of
his neighbors, who, with fheir
guns, went with him in iearch
of the ntgro, They soon found
him fitting under a tree, and
being wit run * iew fee* of nun
Mr. UarriioM cußed to the ne-
gro to remain where he was, or
he would fhooc him. The ne
gro inflantaneoufly bred at Mr.
Harrifbn, and the enormous
load of the gun went through
his body ; and what is wonder
ful, he made a step, fired at the
negro and shot hi in in the neck,
so that both fei! and diet! in a
few minutes ! The two neigh
bors of Mr. Harrison both fired
at the negm, the one miffed
him, and the other lodged fome
small shot in his fide, but, Mr.
Harrison’s shot had proved mor
tal.—Mr. Uarriion was a rcl
pe<ftab!e citizen, and we are
concerned to hear that he has
left behind him a wife and four
young children.
