Hrbilfip tliOy have just failed to
such an Ifiand, and another that
he spoke them in such a latitude.
Nel ion appears in a quondary
and knows not where to meet
his adversary. After the En
glifn have been boafling of their
naval superiority, and that the
French could not move from
their anchorage, what a morti
fying refie&ion mull it be, that
the French have not only failed,
but the Englilh cannot tell whi
ther ! Where have the French
gone, is a general enquiry ?
Nobody knows. . The English
are all in conflernation & Nelson
is running to and fro to find
them. At what period were
the British nation in such a
plight? Never—Bonaparte has
put them to their trumps, and
Nelson is lb far baflkd in the
game, that he knows not what
♦ card to play next. He will
lofc both by tricks and honors.

I LIGH+NING.
In no season have we had so
frequent occaiion to notice the
feverc effects of lightning, as
the present. In the thunder
dorm on Monday the Bth inst.
the lightning flruck the house
of Mr. Zara Thomas, in
Chremonr, and killed two of
his fens—one about 18 years of
age, the ocher about 7■, and
Mr. Thomas himfelf was consi
derably injured by the Pnock.—
The lightning, which entered
the room, had the appearance
of a ball of fire. Several per
fbns, who were present, escaped
injury.
But the moft singular t ffech of
lightning that have come to our
knowledge, was at Hill Ibo rough
the day above mentioned. It
struck one of the chimnies if
the Reverend Jonathan Barnes*
House, and demolished the fame
to che roof j when it entered the
house in various dirrdbons, de
stroyed several polls, unhinged
the doors, brrke confiderabk
glass in the different windows,
melted fome pewter, unfodder
ed the tin ware, and left the
house almost a perfect: wreck.
But what is moft remarkable
is, that a fiat-iron; which had
been just let on the table, was
melted, as well as sortie candle
flicks at no great distance ; and
the nails of several chests in the
chambers were entirely drawn
out * and all this without the
appearance of the erfeds of fire,
except that fome linen on the ta
ble with the fiat-iron, was a little
Injured. No per‘bn was hurt.

We have seen a letter from
the Mediterranean which con
tains the following agreeable in
formation with respect to our
operations against the Barbari
ans of Tripoli. Consul Eaton,
who has assumed the command
of the deposed Bafhaw’s troops,
had marched from Alexandria
with 6000 troops, and proceed
ed as far as Derma.—His force
continued to augment, —The
reigning Lalhaw was preparing i
to meet him. —It was confident
ly hoped, that this enterprifc
in co-operation with the attack
to be made by our fquadr.cn,
would terminate in the vindica
tion of the rights of nature and
nations, and restore our unfor
runate countrymen to the bieff
ings of freedom. —

1 We often fee F.nglifh price

difference of duties payable be
tween British and American
ships, upon entering a port in
Great Britain. .In I'omc cases,
iris double on our (hips to what
it is on Britilh bottoms. Com
mercial men tell us that this
country is charged with a million

million on the imports. Is this
right or equal ? The light mo

j the tonnage duty is often above
a dollar for ships going with
j cargoes to England. Ships in
baiiail pay less, but not under 4
lhillings flerling per ton.-
While our duties are a poor pi
tiful ten per cent, on the duty
