There seems to ho quite a nunihcr
wishing to servo the people, and
the more the merrier.

a pair of ei.fl' links, made of brass
buttons eut from a confederate
soldier’s coat, Gen. Julml Early

Gov. Northern has pardoned
out Tom I’cndley and Eli Fields
who were sentenced to the peni
tentiary tv year or so ago for be
ing accessories after the fact in
several arson eases in Pickens
county.
A general impression prevails
among the republicans that the
future of the party is either
Blaine or defeat, it is barely
possible, however, says the New
York Herald, that its future may
include both. There is nothing
inennnbout fate.
A Tennessee paper proudly pub
lishes the fact that Felias Wool-
soy, a Greene county farmer, has
a pair of shoes that wore made in
18.51 from the skin of a calf that
was once owned by George Wash
ington. But that is nothing as a
relic; “Bun" Stanley, a North
Carolina farmer, claims to have
nailed over his mantle the horns
of the goat that butted George
Washington when he joined the
Masons.
The only southern states'that are
not making much progress in the
work of collecting money and
preparing an exhibit for the Co
lumbian fair, are Georgia, South
Carolina and Mississippi. In
Georgia, the Gov. assisted by a
number of public spirited and
piogressive ladies and gentlemen,
are doing all they’can to prepare
nit exhibit, but are not meet
ing with much success.
A daughter of a Baptist preach
er, William Brunt, shot and kill
ed a notorious outlaw named Al
exander Gilmore in BJadcn coun
ty, N. 0., for forcing her to pre
pare dinner for him in the absence
of tho family. She seized a
double barrel shotgun and lodged
thirteen buckshot in his body,
causing his death in a short time.
It is said that."a reward _of three
hundred dollars is out for Gil
more for murderjn South Caroli
na, dead or alive, and if so Miss
Brunt is entitled to tho reward.
Thb farmers and others w ho arc
raising such a row about hard
times in this country should look
at Kussia and see what real
trouble is. Several cases have
come to light in Bussia\recently
of parents in the famine-plagued
district selling their children. At
llarsinak a man sold his daughter,
a child of eight, for six roubles,
while another in the same dis
trict, who had four children, sold
the oldest, a girl, and got rid of
the others by paying people to
adopt them. In the village of
Neomerofl’kn, in the neighbor
hood of Bratslay Podolia, a man
went about the streets offering to
sell his two daughters, one for
live and the other for three rou
bles.
Mr. Ilill and Air. Cleveland
personally are nothing to us ex
cept as a means to success.
While advocating Mr. Hill we
have not detracted from Mr.
Cleveland. If necessary, either or
both of them should have the wis
dom and patriotism to retire.
And this is the spirit of conces
sion and of conciliation that
should animate the breasts of all
democrats, no man is tit to go as
SHOAL CREEK ITEMS.
Mn. Eiutoh : Tho Shoal Creek
farmers are well up with their
crops, Htauds being generally
good and everything looking
prosperous. The morning of the
28rd and 24th inst., tho thermom
eter has been down to 88 or 40,
with quite a white frost, which I
suppose downed the farmers be
low zero. Sunday evening last.,
between five and six o'clock, we
had the masterest rain and hail
that wo have seen for some time.
Tho ground was covered broad
cast where the water was not
running, and in drifts it was from
shoe-mouth to a foot deep. Th<
hail was small, perhaps from tin
size of a large shot to a common
size ring marble—too small how
ever to do much damage.
We do not know the extent of
hailstorm, but it seemed to ban
been about a half mile wide, and
so far as we know tho heaviest,
part of the hail was between Lit
tlefield’s store and Allison
Smith’s. We hope a week or
two of warm weather will come
and bring out our crops, so as to
restore the feelings of the farmers.
Mr. N. N. Littlefield had a very
fine squad of live, pigs, perhaps a
week old, but found them all
dead in one pile a few days
since.
The baseball players in this
community have recently orguj
nized and are now ready for busi
ness; the young men are exalted
within themselves, and the hearts
of their parents arc made glad in
their engaging in this money
making and profitable game. Tin
club met last Satuiday and did
some very good playing, having
had a goodly number of specta
tors, viz: Jeremiah Stover, E
E. Kenimor, Joseph Christopher,
Esq. E. Carroll, A. W. Smith,
Botov Lewis, and many others,
who were feasting their souls on
the enterprise now being gotten
up in their midst. One thin
surprising about Ibis game was
that ,1. 1). O’Kelley and Bud
Smith, who were in plain view,
failed to stop plowing to witness
the playing, but wo hope that
they, with all the rest of the good
citizens, will sooner or later be
come interested.
Esq. E. Carroll has been mak
ing it lively joining peoplo in
wedlock and feasting on their
good suppers, while his pocket
has failed to rceeivo any feast
and in one or more eases lie has
failed to feast his appetite. Wo are
aware that a true nlliauceman is
willing to work for very small
wages. He is afraid to make any
complaint, as ho probably may
need some of that kind of work
himself ere long.
We are informed that (’apt
Aslmry is making it lively in his
gold pits
N. N. Littlefield never tires
wrapping up goods when he gets
the cash for them.
Alina Carroll and Chat Bowen
have a high time when they can
get to haul some of the girls
around.
John Burgis anticipates a fine
time when he gets his new buggy
recently ordered.
1’. M, Alexander says lie is al
ways at his post, ready to grind
corn or wheat day or night. If
the baseball team is successful lie
may not have to grind next year.

The readers of this paper’will
be pleased to know that there is
at least, one dreaded disease that
science has been able to cure in
all its stages, and that is Catarrh.
Hall’s Catarrh Cure is the only
positive cure known to the medi
cal fraternity. Catarrh being a
constitutional disease, requires
a constitutional treatment.
Hall’s Catarrh Cure is taken in
ternally, acting directly upon the
blood and mucous surfaces of the
system, thereby destroying the
foundation of the disease, and
giving the patient strength by
building up the constitution and
assisting nature in doing its work.

COME TO CLEELAND.
Cleveland is one of the most
promising towns in the state, and
poscsscs natural advantages that
no other town in Georgia can
boast, of. She has the purest air,
tho best water and the highest al
titude of any other town in Geor
gia. The altitude of this place is
nearly 2800 feet. Of course with
this high altitude, wo have the
coolest of summer breezes and
the healthiest of climates, and we
advise the low landers to come to
Cleveland,'.if they want to spend a
pleasant season in one of the
most delightful towns on the face
of the earth, surrounded by beau

thirty-six chvts., equal to #82.50.
Frank Moore was the purchaser,

CURIOUS FIGURES ON THE SUR
PLUS.
The weight and bulk of the gold
and silver coins now held in the
United States treasury form the
subject of much theory among
people of mathematical turn of
mind, one of whom has ascertain
ed that tho gold alone weighs
over GUI tons of 2,000 pounds, and
that the silver weighs 8,000 tons.
(lorded along the highway as wood
is corded the gold would make
a wall 4 feet high and I feet thick
for a distance of 835 feet. The
silver, similarly packed into asol-
id wall, would extend 4,248 feet .
or about live-sixths of a miio. If n ll - * l -
packed in carts, a ton in each cart,
the procession would be nearly
thirty-three miles long, of which
distance the carts containing the
gold would cover two and one-
half miles and the silver laden
carts a fraction over thirty and
0110-quarter miles.

A farmer was rather noted
among his friends for a complain
ing disposition. One year the
crops were exceptionally good,
and some curiosity was felt to see
how he would meet the ease. “I
am afraid,” said he, “thgt such a
great crop would be a powerful
strain on the land.”

"I am sojlred,"
Is a common exclamation at this
season. There is a certain brac
ing effect in cold air which is lost
when the weather grows warmer;
and when nature is renewing her
youth, her admirers feel dull,
sluggish and tired. This condi
tion is owing mainly to the im
pure condition of the blood, and
its failure to supply healthy tis
sue to tho various organs of the
body. It is remarkable how sus
