Hon. Hurry Reid has been ap
pointed Judge of Atlanta City
Court by (iovernor Atkinson.
The appointment is a good one,
Mr. lb-id being one of the I >r i-j lit -
est young men in the State.
Judge Reid is a brothel- of Mrs.
Z. T. 1 .ogan, of I his place.
Whenever y ou hear a speaker
begin about “the country going
to the dogs," “Wall street op
pressors,’’ the “free silver” fan
tasy, and the balance of tlie well
known cry, put him down as a
candidate Irving to run down
some otHeo.
We admire and commend (iov
ernor Atkinson's course in the
matter of lawlessness in our
Slate. 'The high handed and in
discreet abuse of an unwritten
law should be called down. The
time lias arrived that demands
it.
Lviu-hings will stop, when out
laws are so remedied that sure
and swift punishment shall be
meted out to criminals. The
tardy course (>f justice is largely
responsible for the state of tilings,
that exist to-day all over the
United Stales, irrespeetiveof sec

l\ e deny that the Rush bill is a
victory for the liquor men. ‘The
defeat of this hill was due entire
ly to the disrepute of South Curo-

which the Rush bill was modeled.
Wise heads observing the failure
of the South t ’atolina s\ stem, and
the scenes ot riot and murder at
tending its enforcement, were iiu-

believe, is the best solution of the
question.

A Now Town.

A coin puny known as the Raid-
win Part net-ship Co., have laved
j oil' a town on the dividiing

road, one one half miles of Cor
nelia, and are now busily engaged
j in cleaning up streets and creeling
houses at that place. They ex
pect to have a postofiee in oper
ation in a few weeks, and also a
depot put up fofthem.
They expect to get the bulk o f
tin-trade from the country south
of them, as it is situated on the
main wagon road to Ranks coun
tv, besides largely drawing H ide
from White and Hall counties.
The town is beautifully situated
and tip- location may probably
materially help to build the place

The Thing,
Many people have an idea that
the columns of it newspaper are
public properl v, and to b - devo-
te.r gratuitously to who ever
chooses to occupy them. 'The
publisher of a newspaper has one
thing to sell and one
thing to rent. Can anv one
inform us why he should
lie expected to give away either
the ono or the other? He can do
so if he chooses, and he does as a
matter of practical fact, furnish a
great deal of space rent free.
Rut it does not follow that In-
ought to be expected to do so.
ll should be recognized a contri
bution, exactly as would be the
giving away of sugar or eoll'i-e by
the grocery man. Rut strange to
say it is not looked upon in that,
