Lime as a Fertilizer.
Manures may bo classed under three
principal heads: first, those which sup
ply sorao essential element to tho
plant; second, those which act as
mere stimulants; and lastly, those
which do not act directly on the plant,
but act on subtances alroady in the
soil, rendering them more suitable for
plant life. Lime belongs to this last
class almost entirely, as there are ve
ry few soils that do not contain suffi
cient lime for any direct demands
that plants are likely to make on
them.
In order that a plant may feed on
the inorganic matter in the soil, or, in
deed, on any matter, it must be
brought into a soluble state. Plants
feed only on liquids and gasses; they
have no power of assimilating solid
food.
The inorganic portions of plants are
built up chiefly of potash, soda, lime,
magnesia, combined with silicic, sul
phuric, phosphoric and hydro-chloric
acids, as well as with many organic
acids. Tho carbonates, so generally
found in tho ashes of plants, rarely ex
ist in tho plants themselves, being
mostly formed from salts of organic
acids during tho process of burning.
A small portion of the above mention
ed bases already exist in the soil in a
soluble state, but are much more
abundant in the insoluble condition.
If, howevor, wo add caustic lime to
a soil, it renders these insoluble sub
stances soluble, and prepares thorn for
the uso of the plant.
All soils formed from the decompo
sition of granite contain an abundance
of potassa and silica the most impor
tant elements for the growth of the
v,heat plants. But theso two elements
are combined with each other, and
with alumina, in the form of feldspar,
which is almost perfectly insoluble. —
Caustic lime breaks up this combina
tion; and accordingly, when the farm
er finds that his whoat straw is get
ting too feeble to support its own
weight, he applies lime to the soil, with
tho immediate effect of stiffening up
the straw. Fifty or sixty years ago,
tho farms in New York, Pennsylvania
and Virginia had almost run down,
and were not considered worth fenc
ing. Theso wore called “old fields
and such may be still found in abun
dance through Maryland and Virgin
ia. They had been cropped through
consecutive years with the samo plants,
until they would no longer yield
enough to pay for the trouble. In
some parts of Pennsylvania lime is
abundant, and upon applying it to the
worn-out soils the effect was remarka
ble. Farms that thirty or forty years
ago could almost have been had for
the asking, are now known as being
among the best in the State.
But it is not on the inorganic por
tion of the soil alone that lime acts. —
It bears, perhaps, an even more im
portant relation to the organic portion
of the soil. In Norway and Sweden,
every farmer has to pay a poition of
his tax to the government in saltpetre.
In order to prepare this, heaps to
gether old mortar or lime, manure,
ashes and earth, and keeps tho heap
moist. The lime and the nitrogenous
matter of tho manure re-act on each
other, and form nitrate and carbonate
of limo.
Nitrate of lime is decomposed by
the carbonate of potassa from the
wood ashes, and saltpetre is thus form
ed. ‘Precisely the same kind of re-ac
tion is going on continually in the soil
when we apply lime to it; and thus
the nitrogen of the decaying vegetable
matter is brought into fit condition
for the use of plants. For all these
uses the more caustic the lime is, the
better for the land. A heap of lime
that has been long exposed to air and
rain is much less valuable than that
which is freshly slacked, as it has ab
sorbed carbonic acid from the air.—
Carbonate of lime is of but little value
as a manure, although, when it is fine
ly divided, as when it is in a state of
chalk, it may servo to neutralize the
vegetable acids that exist in some wet
lands. It is undoubtedly better to
apply lime directly to the soil than to
make a compost of it, with peat, or
such substances, for we do not gain
enough by the mixing to pay for the
expense of the manipulation. We
have been frequently asked how much
lime should be applied to the acre.—
This is a very difficult question to an
swer, unless we know all about the
soil to which it is to be applied. What
would be an excessive quantity for
some lands is too little for others. In
some sections, or upon some lands,
one hundred bushels to the acre may
be applied with beneficial results; in
others, fifty or sixty bushels are an
abundance, while some lands will not
bear more than twenty or thirty.
Juime should never be applied di-
rectly in association with manure, as it
! tends to drive off the ammonia and
thus lower its value. If we wish to
apply it to corn or wheat land, it is
j best, perhaps, to top-dress the sod the
year before we intend to plough. The
manure may be then applied, and
ploughed under in the SpriDg, with
out much danger of loss, as the lime
has been doing its work daring the
Winter.

Ayer’s Ague Cure,
For Fever and A#;ae, Intermittent Fever,
Chill Fever, Remittent Fever, Dumb
Ague, Periodical or Bilious Fever, Ac.,
and indeed all tho affections which arise
from malarious,, marsh, or miasmatic
poisons.
No one remedy is loader
P called for by the necessities of
g the American people than a
rm/ sum and sale cure for Fever
J and Ague. Snch we are now
enabled to offer, with a perfect
M certainty that it will eradicate
* the disease, and with assur
ance, founded on proof, that no h;irm can ariao
from its use in any quantity.
That which protects from or prevents this dis
order must be of immense service in the com
munities where it prevails. Prevention Is better
than cure, for the patient escapes the risk which
he must run in violent attacks of this baleful dis
temper. This “ Ctntr ” expels the niiasmatio
poison of Fever and Ague from the system,
and prevents the development of "he disease, ir
taken on the first approach of itit premonitory
symptoms. It is not only the best remedy ever
yet aiscovered for this class of complaints, but
also the cheapest. The large qus.ntity we sup
ply for a dollar brings it within the reach of
ever}- body; and in bilious districts, where
Fever and Ague jrevai’s, everybody should
have it, and use it freely, both for cure and pro
tection. It is hoped this price will place it within
the reach of all —the poor as well as the rich.
A great superiority of this remedy over any
other ever discovered for the epee ly and certain
cure of Intermittents is, that it contains no Qui
nine or mineral; consequently it produces no
Suinism or other injurious effects whatever upon
le constitution. Those cured by it are left as
healthy as if they had never had toe disease.
Fever and Ague is not alone tho consequence
of the miasmatic poison. A great variety of dis
orders arise from its irritation, among which
are Neuralgia, Rheumatism, Go it, Headache,
Blindness, Toothache, Earache, Catarrh, Astir
ma, Palpitation, Painful Affection of the Spleen,
Hysterics, Pain in the Bowels, Colic, Paralysis,
and derangement of the Stomach, all of which,
when originating in this cause, put on the in
termittent type, or become periodical. This
“Cure” expels the poison from the blood, and
consequently cures them .all alike. It is an in
valuable protection to immigrants and persons
travelling or temporarily residing in the mala
rious districts. If taken occasionally or daily
while {exposed to the infection, that.will be ex
creted from the system, and cannot accumulate
in sufficient quantity to ripen into disease.
Hence it is even more valuable for protection
than cure; and few will ever suffer from Inter
mittents if they avail themselves of tho protec
tion this remedy affords.
For Liver Complaints, arising from torpid
ity of the Liver, it is an excellent remedy, stim
ulating the Liver into healthy activity, and pro
ducing many truly remarkable cures, where
other medicines fail.

zens, of all classes, establishes the fact, that
Ciierry Pectoral will and does relieve and
cure the afflicting disorders of the Throat and
Lungs beyond any other medicine. The most
dangerous affections of the Pulmonary Organs
yield to its power; and cases of Consump
tion, cured by this preparation, are public
ly known, so remarkable as hardly to he be
lieved, were they not proven beyond dispute.
Asa remedy it is adequate, on which the public
may rely for full protection. By curing Coughs,
the forerunners of more serious disease, it saves
unnumbered lives, and an amount of suffering
not to be computed. It challenges trial, and con
vinces the most sceptical. Every family should
keep it on hand as a protection against the early
and unperceived attack of Pulmonary Affections,
which are easily met at first, but which become
incurable, and too often fatal, if neglected. Ten
der lungs need this defence; and it is unwise to
be without it. Asa safeguard to children, amid
the distressing diseases which beset the Throat
and Chest of childhood, Cherry Pectoral
is invaluable; for, by its timely use, multi
tudes are rescued from premature graves, and
saved to the love and affection centred on them.
It acts speedily and surely against ordinary colds,
securing sound and health-restoring sleep. No
one will suffer troublesome Influenza aud pain
ful Bronchitis, when they know how easily
they can be cured.
Originally the product of long, laborious, and
successful chemical investigation, no cost or toil
is spared in making every bottle in the utmost
possible perfection. It may be confidently re
lied upon as possessing all the virtues it has’ ever
exhibited, and capable of producing cures as
memorable as the greatest it has ever effected.

They are a Gentle Purgative ns well ns a

as a powerful agent in relieving Congestion or Inflam

FOR FEMALE COMPLAINTS, in young or

For Inflammatory and Chronic Rheuma
tism and Gout, Dyspepsia or Indigestion,
Bilious, Remittent and Intermittent Fe
vers, Discuses of the Blood, Liver, Kid
neys and Bladder, these Bitters have been most
successful. Such Discuses are caused by Vitiated
Blood, which is generally produced by derangement
of the Digestive Organs.
DYSPEPSIA OR INDIGESTION, Head

They invigorate the Stomach and stimulate the torplr

Diseases of the Skin, of whatever name or nature, are
literally dug up and carried out of the system in & short
time by the use of these Bittera. One bottle in such
cases will convince the most incredulous of their cura

Cleanse the Vitiated Blood whenever yon find its im
purities bursting through the skin in Pimples, Erup
tions or Sores ; cleanse it when you find it obstructed
and sluggish in the veins; cleanse it when it is fool,
ana your feelings will tell you when. Keep the blood
pure, and the health of the system will follow.
Pin, Tape, and other Worms, lurking in the
system of so many thousands, are effectually destroyed
and removed. Says a distinguished physiologist,
there is scarcely an individual upon the face of the
earth whose body is exempt from the presence of
worms. It is not upon the healthy elements of the
body that worms exist, but upon the diseased humors
tnd slimy deposits that breed these living monsters of
lsease. No System of Medicine, no vermifuges, no
anthelmintics will free the system from worms like
these Bitters.
