To the Readers of the Express.
The Standard , a paper published in this
place, in the last two or three issues seeks
to draw the proprietors of this paper into a
fuse gotten up between our Local Editor,
Mr. J. 'l'." Gibson, and the Editor or Editors
of that paper. From the first issue of that
paper we have avoided all controversies that
would at oil likely lead to bad feelings or
serious results betwixt us as friends’and
Editors. We are still disposed to adhere to
this policy, as we are peacable men. Some
days since, the junior Editor of that paper
approached us on the streets and asked us
if we, Col. Harris and myself, proprietors
of the Express, endorsed certain articles of
our Local Editor which appeared in the
local columns of our paper under his
regular head. We told him that our Local
was responsible for his own articles, and his
name appeared at the top of his column, so
that our readers might understand who they
were reading after, and not confound his
writing with ours. The Local notices and
endorses things that we do not approve,
yet, because lie writes under his own name,
we suffer them to be published. We do not
dictate to him what he shall or how he shall
write —he selects his own subjects without
our knowledge and handles them according
ly. We form opinions as to the truth or
falsity of his articles, but, as they did not
appear to have any personal significance,
we never expressed them publicly or pri
vately. We further assured the junior Ed
itor that we entertained Du ill will or feel
ings towards him or his patter. He expres
sed himself, we understood, as being satis
fied with our explanation. In the very next
issue of his paper he accused us of know
ingly giving publicity to a falsehood. This,
we th ught a little harsh and provoking ;
but said nothing further than to disclaim
the allegation. Our Local again replied to
articles in that pnper, and, in response to
his reply the editor or editors again seek
to throw the responsibility of the articles in
question upon us by saying that “it is curi
ous in us to try to dodge the responsibility
hy placing a nondescript editor between us
and the injured.” If we have ever injured
the Standard or its editors we don’t know
it. Wo are responsible for what goes into
cur paper provided no one else assumes the
responsibility, but where that is the case,
there is no necessity for us to assume the
responsibility of a thing we had no hand in
—just as well undertake to make us an
swerable for everything that advertisers say
over their own signatures, in our paper. —
No! We don’t wish to dodge any respon
sibility that attaches to us, or give circula
tion to “what we know to be a falsehood” to
the injury of our fellow-man.
We have said this much in explanation—
We shall say no more.

We having addressed a private note
to the Editors of the Standard, informing
them, that we were not only responsible
for all we have said, but reiterated it, there
by giving them an opportunity of redress
ing themselves for anything we have said
which they disliked, and they having failed
to reply, we denounce the author of the ar

ative to us, as a liar, an unmitigated cow

and are responsible for it, wholly and fully
responsible, the Standard puppy’s opinion
to the contrary, notwithstanding. This
shall end the ntwepuper fight, upon our part.

To the Editor:
In another advertisethb Lanc
don Fertilizer, the price of which has been
SGO per ton. Although this is below the
price of any other reliable commercial xns,-
nure in the market', yfet I have determined to
make the price still 1 lower. The Langdon is
a home production, made from well knows
articles produced here, (Bones and Cotton
Seed Meal mainly) and I can afford to man
ufacture and sell it cheaper than any foreign
manufacturer can put his product in this mar
ket.
Again, I have this year so developed and
perfected my works as to reduce the
manufacture considerably; and lastly, so
generous has been the support of this net?
Southern enterprise by our planters, in giv
ing the Langdon their preference, that I pro
pose to reciprocate by giving them all the
advantage I possess in the production of the
article.
The price hereafter will be only SSO per
ton for lots of five or more tons, $55 for less
amounts, and $3 per hundred pounds for
amounts less than a ton. At this low price
every good farmer will hs’e fertilizers.
Please give this a few insertions for tlx 3
benefit of your planter readers.
Very Respectfully,
VV. D. MANN,

When disease has undermined the health,
and the physical system has become pros
trated, a stimulant that will not only
strengthen, but remove the cause, should be
immediately resorted to. Mental distress is
also a fruitful source of the breaking down
of the constitution, and the ravages of this
enemy to health are truly alarming. For
all such maladies Hostetler’s Stomach
Bitters have unsurpassed. By
acting directly upon the digestive organs,
they remove the heavy, disagreeable feeling
after eating, so often complained of by
persons of a delicate temperament. As soon
as digestion is restored, the patient finds
his strength increasing, and his general
health improved.
Thousands of persons certify that it may
be relied on in all cases of • weakness or
nervous debility attendant upon sedentary
habits. The generality of Bitters are so
disagreeable to the taste that they are ob
jectionable to a weak stomach. This is not
the case with Host otter’s Bitters, which wil l
be found mild and extremely pleasant. Bal
samic plants, barks and roots conlribute
their restorative juices to render it soothing
and strengthening. Its basis is the only
pure stimulant which has ever been pro
duced, containing no fusil oil, or any other
deleterious element. The most careful and
skillful chemists have analyzed the Bitters,
and pronounce them harmless. This is
scientific testimony; but the testimony of
the hundreds of thousands who have expe
rienced the preventive and curative effects
of the GREAT VEGETABLE TONIC and ALTERA
TIVE of modem times is still more conclusive
In Fever and Ague. Dyspepsia, Billiousness,
Nervous Complaints and general debility it
is as nearly infallible as anything in this
fallible world can be.

FROM THE MANY TESTIMONIALS from
practical men, these are here given;
Tuscaloosa, Ala.. )
December 22d, 1870. f
Col. W. D. .Yan n : ’
Sir.—Your Circular of the lsj Inst, came to
hand. As we found the Langdoil Fertilizer the
best that we tried, I give you my experience
with it. Our land is poor, red hill land. Used
200 lbs. to the acre. We used one ton of Gillum's,
at $75; three tons of Zell’s, at $55 per ton; two
(tons of the Lougdon, at S6O per ton. The laud
was all worked alike, and the some quantity
used of each. I did not keep the weights of each
field separate, but attended to the picking and
weighing myself, and khow that there was more
cotton gathered to the acre on the Langdon than
any other part of the place. The Zell’s was next.
From my own experience, and in the opinion of
all farmers who took notice of it v the Langdon
Fertilizer was far superior to any that we used.
Respectfully yours, Ac.,
C. IL FITTS.
Mr. Thomas IT. Kennedy, of Meridian, Miss.,
after recounting his cxperlenceiu the use of the
Langdon Fertilizer, says; “When I lived on mv

Manure, but I never used anything that would
begin to compare with the Lang.lon Fertilizer.”
THE PRICE AT THE MILLS IS SSO PER TON,
in five ton lots. $55 for a single toil. $3 per 100
lbs. for small lots.
It is exchanged for Cotton Seed, 300 pounds, in
strong sacks, delivered free on board boat or cars
at Mobile, for one ton Cotton Seed, free at the
landing or depot up country—sacks and twine
furnished by the Mills.
Os its cheapness, Col. Laugdon says: “Its
cheapness—l am fully convinced that, at the
price mnv fixed by you, to-wit: $55 per ton, it
is much the cheapest fertilizer in our market.
Pound for pound, I consider it more valuable
than the preparations that are Selling at $75 to
SBO. For my own use, I would greatly prefer it
to Peruvian Guano at the same price.” Os its
merits, he says: “The result is the best Fertil
izer iu the world for our Southern lands, in mv
opinion.”
Again: “It contains more fully and complete
ly than any other, the elements neceessary for
the production of Southern crops and the reno
vation of Southern soil.
Prof. Charles U. Shepard, Jr., M. I)., Professor
of Chemistry South Carolina Medical College,
and Inspector of Fertilizers lor South Carolina,
who made a full and careful analysis of the
Langdon Fertilizer, says of it: “It is‘a very su
perior article.”
I also crash at the milis. Raw Bones, which
are ground fine. Price at the Mills, $45 per ton.
Ground Raw Bone is too well known as a strong
Fertilizer to need comment. For trees, shrub
bery and grapes, it has no equal. The Ground
Bone of the Mobile oil mills is warranted to con

Grover and Baker Sewing Machine
THIS celebrated Sewing Marhiuo has been in
us. for nearly twenty years, and is now us
ed by over three hundred thousand fatnilie*,
and has gained a reputation far .above any oth
er sewing Machine. It has been awarded more
national prizes than any other-machine in the
world; at the Great World’s. Fair at New York,
it was awarded the Hold Medal; at the London
Fair it won the very highest prize, and in 1867,
at Paris, it was awarded the Cross of the Legion
of Honor; bevMc* this, it has won the First
Premium at all the State Fairs where, it has
been exhibited* However, we.do not claim that
premiums Won at our State and County Fairs
any great honor or mark of distinction, us it
depends more on the operator than the machine,
thev seldom have judges who are mechanics,
and judges of a Sewing Machine. At National
Fairs there are a sworn Committee, who are
judges of machinery. The following are some
of the reasons why the Grover A Baker is the
best:
It is the lightest running Machine in use; it is
the simplest; it is more rapid in its movements;
sews directly from two spools without rewind
ing; sews till kinds of work without baisting.
can do twice as much work iu a day as any
other machine; it is the most durable, and
almost noiseless; it sews equally well on all
kinds of goods, from the finest Bwiss muslin to
the heaviest Heaver eloth; makes the elastic
lock-stitch much the strongest in usej%ndevety
machine is fully warranted. Mho can desire
any more in a sewing machine. There is every
variety and size of these machine?, front*'the
lightest family to the heaviest loathe* machine.
These machines are now for sale at CartersvflTe,
Ha., by Leon A (.'AMP, in one of Judge Parrott's
new Store Houses, under the City hall. Mu
chines will be delivered to customers either in
or out of the city, and full instructions given
free of charge; and should any of our machines
fall short of our recommendation, the jnonev
will be cheerfully refunded or placed in it*
stead any other machine in use. Old Machines
repaired and put iu good order on the very
shortest notice.
