Mm. 2-bitoh : On last Sabbath the Annual Meetirg of the Bartow Coun tv Bible Society was held at the Bap tist Church. Bro. J. J. Howard, Pres ident, took the Chair, and called the meeting to order at 10 o'clock. Itev. W. W. Leake opened the exercises by an appropriate portion of Scripture, with singing and prayer. Bro. John Wikle, the efficient Secreta ry, lead Minutes of last meeting. Bro. Erwin, read a very interesting statis tical report, which will be published, and ought to be read, and its sugges tiveness will fflrnish much for all to think about. The Annual Report was made by Rev. J. L. Pierce, and will also be published, if you can give the needed room in your paper. The Revs. Thco. E. Smith and J. W. Harris, sev erally addressed the expectant audience in short, but pertinent, appropriate and effective speeches. Rev. W. A. Parks, the General Agent, closed these very timely and profitable exercises, in a manner that kept up the interest to the end. The congregation, promptly and cheerfully responded to his call for funds for further operations. One hundred dollars was soon laid upon the table, which will all be used in the further operation of the Society. The age in which we live, marvelous as it is in material development, and adorned as it is with discoveries in ev ery department of science, presents no fact, so significant in forecasting the future of the world, as the-general dif fusion of the Scriptures—the Word of God, without note or comment. The discoveries of science, promoting, as they do, the material comforts of the race, have their place, and contribute to. the progress of the world, in the civilization and refinement of the peo ples. They do no more they can achieve nothing higher. These may lift the nations to a higher form of worldhnets, and gratify human vanity, as it 100 l s upon the marshalled array of scientific discoveries and inventions, which signal the march of mind, and attest its wonderful powers. But these agencies, multiply them as you may, and potential, as they confessedly are, cannot change the carnal into the spir itual, or transmute the earthly into the Heavenly. • These msti u men tali ties, so lauded and glorified, nay change the savage into a civilized mau—may lift him to a higher grade of thought and feeling -may soften and tone down, what is harsh and rugged in his na unv. These r.genrieN, to which the world burns incense, and in the ex travagance of its praise, well nigh dei fies, wonderfully enlarges the field of speculative thought, and indexes well the expansion and range of the human intellect. All this, these instrumental ities, can (to and show—they can do much, but they lea\e more undoue. — They can elevate human character, but they cannot sanctify human nature; they can refine, but they cannot chris tianize —beautify the earth, they can, and do, but never show the way to Heaven. The Bible, circulating among the nations read by the people, will pioneer the way to higher and better things It is the solitary Heavenly voice in this Babel world, with its lo ! here, and lo ! there, crying, this is the way, walk ye in it ; proclaiming the Name—the only Name, under Heaven whence cometh salvation. It would be a work of supererogation at this day, and before a Christian people, to disea m the value of the Holy Scrip- 1 turos. That they were given by in-! spiratiou of God, and that holy men, as they were moved by the Spirit, pen-! ned its precious, saving truths, is uu- j questioned, save as no.v and then, the j carnal heart carps and cavils, reveal-! ing therein its enmity and wickedness, j and proving, in its weakness and man- ■ ifold errors, the necessity of that rove-! lation it effects to despise. The Bible ' needs no eulogy: we attempt none. — J Among admitted facts, and upon testi- | mony the most satisfactory and assur-! ing, and after a contest, in which every j fact presented, was questioned and: tried, and every principle learnedly; and exhaustingly discussed, none can array in its behalf, so many proofs, or muster in its defense, so much of learn- j ing and intellect, as the Bible in its 1 claim to Divine Inspiration. The Scriptures in mere literary excellence, Exceeds in every view the master piec es of human genius and scholarship — it shines a sun, among all the host of lesser lights, borrowing from none, but giving to all. The Bible stands apart and above all other books, in the sublimity of its themes and the authority of its announcements. It i.-. the Book for all times, and for every people. It talks to nations to kings and to ?.ll that are in authori ty. It is a household book, and talks to husbands and wives enjoining love and obedience; to parents—nxise up your children in the nurture and ad monition of the Lord; to children —re- member now thy Creator in the days of thy youth;to masters—give unto your servants that which is just and equal; to servants—enjoining obedi-, euce —not with eye service, as men pleasers —but in singkness cf heart,; fearing God. This blessed Book, in its heavenly instructions overlooks none; but has a word for each, from j the highest to the lowest, it passes, and gives direction to each and to all. It is The Book. The imprimatur of God is upon it Jntidelitv may reason and bluster; gainsayers scoff and de ride and hell ruffe, but they can never obliterate or hide the divinity which beams in its truth, or hush that king ly voice, which conies forth in its royal proclamations of pardon to the peni tent and life to the dead. Holding as we do, without the least misgiving to the truth that the Bible, and not the decrees of Council, or the traditions of the Church is the only and the suffi cient rule of Christian faith and j practice. It is oui bonnden duty to spread the Scriptures, to place the" Bible, without note or comment, in every household and 1 jt the Book, without the manipulation of a priesthood, always arrogant and some times ignorant, interpret itself to the honest, prayerful heart, and shed its o *.a light upon the darkened mind.— It is a sad fact, a shame to Christian people. that so many are vet without the word of God. O, that the cry that now comes to our ears may peal a resurrect.on trump upon onr torpid that wikatgtc t new life, we may # be strong, and quit ourselves like men. Ihe A Cierie.an Bible Socie v, from the date ts its establishment in 1816 to the j it sent time, has been abundant in labor, and unbounded in liberality.- By means of State and coun.y auxdia iies, it has aroused and maintained a wide spread intent in the work of Bi ble distribution, and through its nu merous agencies, coextensive with the continent, it bus placed the Lamp of Life iu innumerable households, when it giveth light to all that are in the house. r i! e A. B. Society has done a noble woik in Bible trail-lation. So extended is its work in this direction, that now the Indian tribes in the far V\ est, and the Shemitic races of the East are alike blessed in reading the word of the Lorpl Jesus in tlieii moth er tongu .a. i.be has complet ed and is now circulating an Arabic vtr sion, which it is es hunted will reach a Huhamniedon population of hundieds of millions, stretching from the great wall of China in the Northeast, to the pillows of Hercules in the Southwest. Other versions of the scriptures, as much needed, art now in course of completion, or con templated by the Society, and when finished, the miracle of the c >ufusion of Langu-.ges at Babel, will be revers ed. and all peoples and tribes, will speak in their vernacular the one lan guage of Christian faith and love. While we rejoice in this great and good work of the Parent Society, we are more directly concerned iu supply ing the destitution immediately a.ouud us. It is gratifying to report that since our last annual meeting, our worthy brother, John Jolly, ns the Agent of the Bartow Cos. B. Society, has thoroughly canvassed the county, visiting over six hundred families. In this exploration, seventy-three fa mi ies were found without the*word of Life aud seventy-two were supplied. It is gratifying to k ow that a county so populous as ours is so well supplied with the scriptures. God grant that the Book—the precious Book—may be a bl ssing to every household in the county; alight in every time of darkness: a counsellor in every time of perplexi ty; a sure wqpd in tlnse times of lloubt aud uncertainty. In conclusion we, recommend the adoption of the follow ing resolution. Resolved. That the Bartow Cos. B. Society heartily approve the general manage ijient of the A. B. Society, and hereby renews its assurance of sympa thy with the aims of that society, and its pledge, of co-operation with its no ble efforts to supi ly the world with the Word of Life. The biggest thing, and by far the most im portant, that they are doing, is killing time and getting Nine Dollars a Day for it. The big agency at Washington is also in full blast, and the little one is anxious to hear from its uncle about the chances of holding on to the little business of continuing to kill time at Nine Dollars a Day for two years more. The big agency adjourns about the 18th or 28th, or thereabouts, and the littlo one is anxiously expecting the afflatus to dimulule them to re newed dilligence in getting Nino Dol lars a Day, by the organization of the negro millitia. The inhabitants of e'ties perceive things in their generalities; those of" the country in thei? individual aspect. A power of obser vation or description may be employed with much more effect in the latter sphere than in the former; though borne facts appear to con tradict the opimon, as several of our exem plars of the fine arts have been known to produce their works in cities. Jlcnith's Bent Defence. “The weak eatetb herbs,” says St, Paul, so that eighteen hundred years ago the val ue of medicinal plants was appreciated. In the Old Testament botanical remedies are repeatedly recommended, but in no passage of sacred history is man recommended to swallow calomel, or blue pill, or any other mineral preparation, '1 lie sick were di rccted to eat herbs to strengthen them, to heal them, to restore them. In that day the art of making vegetable extracts was un known. Tko herbal medicines were mere iniusions. t It w T as reserved for a later age to unite the j sanitary essences of tonic, aperient and anti- 1 tillious roots, barks, and plants, with an ' active stimulant, and thus secure their rap id diffusion through the debilitated or dis ordered system. The crowning triumph of this effective mode of concentrating aud ap plying the virtues of medicinal vegetables was achieved iu the production of llostet ter’s Stomach Bitters- Never before had a perfectly pure alcoholic stimulant been combined with the Expressed juices of the finest specifics of the vegetable kingdom.— Never yet, though eighteen years have eiap sed since its introduction, has this great res torative been equalled. It is the centre of our being, around which revolves all that makes existence happy. When this source is corrupted the painful effects are visible in many shapes, prominent among which is SCROFULA. This is a taint or infection ofthe human organism, and probabiy no one is wholly free from it. It exhibits itself in various shapes—as Ulcers and Sores, Decayed Bones, Diseased Scalp. Sore Eyes, Weak and Diseas ed Joints, St. Vitus’ Dance, Foul Discharg es from the Nostrils, Eruptions, Glandular Swellings, Throat \ff - ,'tious, Rheumatism, Heart Affections, Nervous Disorders, Bar renness, Disorders of the Womb, Dropsy, tfyphiihiic Affections, *.ivcr Complaint, Salt Rheum, Dyspepsia, Neuralgia, Loss of Man hood and General Debility. It ha.D been the- custom to treat these dis eases with Mercury and other Mineral sub stances, which, though sometimes producing a cure, often prove injurious and entails misery in after life. The long known inju rious properties of these so-called alteratives and purifiers has led the philauthropical man of science to explore the arena of na ture, the result of which has been the discov ery of vegetable products which possess the power of eradicating these Taints from the Blood. Dr. TUTT’S Compound Extract Os Sarparilla and Queen’s Delight. Is the acknowledged antidote to all Blood Diseases. By its use the alliictions above enumerated can be permanently banished, and the Source—the Centre of Life—the Blood. be maintained in all its purity and vigor. For Diseases produced *>y Hie use of Mercury, and for Syplilllis, with Its truin’ of evils, this com pound is the only sure antidote. To the poor creature, enfeebled in mind and body, by secret practices, whose nerves arc unstrung, and countenance downcast THE SARSAPARILLA AND Queen's Delight is a blessing. Try it fairly, and your nerves will be restored to their wonted vigor, and your dejected countenance be made radiant with the conciousness of KESTORED MANHOOD. Being free from violent minerals, it is adapted to general use. The old and the young may use it; the most delicate female at any time may take it; the tender infant, who may have inherited disease, wiil be cur ed by it. FOB PURIFYING THE BLOOD TJSE DR. TUTT’S Extract of Sarsaparilla AND QUEER’S DELIGHT When used in the Spring it removes all hu mors which infest the system ; and banishes the languor and debility peculiar to that sea son of the year. It acts promptly on-the LIVER AND BIDXEYS, Producing a healthy action of the important organs by which all the impurities of the sys tem are carried off, and the result is A Clear Main, a Good Appetite, and £Euu} ant Spirit*.
