The Road has been a live thing for over a i year, and I don’t lelieve the share hoidc-rs know rmything about it. I thought Directors were elected to in form the share-holders how 1 heir mon ey was spent, and how their business jis managed. They Lain’t informed me. I have bee-n told in .til these public ; companits there are many tfneers who ' draw u good salary, and have nothing to do, and I want one of them, and untii I see how they are paid and what they do, I don’t know which to apply for. I thought the Directors j would find out and let us know, but I they ha vunot, and I so conclude as you ' are there, and as it is the business of the Printer to know even thing, to ask you. I want to know the offices and tl.e pay. What is the President’s pay ? what is each dilectors pay, and 'what do they do for it ? what is the engin eer’s pay ? what is the conductor’s pay ? ! what, is the fireman’s pav ? wh it is j the surgeon’s fay ? what is the law yers pay ? what is the superintend ent’s }ay ? "What is the -pay now* when they have nothing to do. I • don’t want to know what it will be when he has to work for it, for then I don’t want it. Matthews, near Dauielsville, in Madison county re markable for its age and size. It measures ten feet and two inches in circumference around the body four feet from the ground; it was planted by Mr. James \ Vare, a soldier of the war of 177 G. The tree is now eighty years of age, and is bearing a full crop of fruit. Yv’hen Colonel Forney went to the Georgia Fair, at Macon, he said the lives and property of Northern men were as safe in Georgia as they were in Pennsylvania. He thought differently after Bullock paid him four or five thousand dollars for the use of his columns. —Sav. Republican. BS*. Read what Bishop McTeire says: Mr. Editor: —Allow me to commend to you and your readers the Skating rink. It can—it should substitute dancing as an exercise and amusement for the young people of both sexes. It furnishes iu-door graceful, lively exer cise, both muscular and nervous ex citement, and leaves no excuse for daucing. I wish there was a Skating rink iu every village and boarding school.—Letter to Christian Advocate April 9, 1870. s Terrible fires are raging in the woods in the upper (Michigan) Peninsula.— At Calumet and Bed Jacket the losses by fires are reported as terribly severe, the latter village having been laid in ruins. Gr.AFE Growing—The Experience of Practical Men. —At the annual con vention of grape growers of New York State the subject of planting and prun ing grapes came in for a share of the discussii n, and the fact brought out shows that the system of long pruning and of leaving more wood than advis able to leave during the summer, re sulted in producing ripened fruit before any other. Space enough should be left to produce their natural courses. The shading of the left leaf upon the cluster was an advantage which pre vented sun-burning. The leaf is to the vine as the lungs is to the body, and taking away the leaf produces dis eases in the roots. The method of summer pruning, ns pursued by the German growers, was shown to ulti mately result in diseases To the vines. Grapes have a better flavor by being shaded. The proper system to pursue, according to European viniculturists, is to let the main vine run along the ground for a distance of fifteen or twenty feet before training it on the I trellis. It was stated that vines were seriously injured by mutilating the i roots in plowing, and that it was acl -1 visable to use only the hoe as an ) implement of cultivating the ground !at the roots. Grape vines sometimes j extended fifteen feet in a perpendicu lar course Over cropping was said to be almost sure to prevent grapes from ripening, though instances were shown where each was not the ease.
