CONDENSED STOKIES.
Prince Henry of Prusaia’t Joke With
a Peasant.
The kaiser’s popular brother,
Prince Henry of Prussia, with his
jovial manner and keen sense of hu
mor, always enjoys a joke.
The other day the prince, who is
an ardent automobilist, way riding
in his automobile on a country road
near Kiel, and a peasant insisted
on staying in the center of the nar*
row road with his farm wagon. No
amount of blowing of the hom by
the prince could make him budge.
Seeing that the peasant evidently
enjoyed being able to keep the au
tomobile from passing him, the
prince, putting on 6peed, pushed
his wagon to one side of the road

and passed by with a smile, which
broadened as he heard the peasant
shout after him that he was a clum
sy fool, not fit to run a wheelbar
row.
A little farther on he stopped and
sent his companion back to the
peasant.
"When you called one of us a
clumsy fool,” the officer said, "I
suppose you meant his royal high
ness ?”
"His royal highness!” the peas
ant stammered, turning pale, while
visions of a cell in jail arose before
him. “What royal highness?”
“Prince Henry of Prussia, who
drove the who sent
me back to hand you this twenty
mark piece for not being afraid of
saying what you mean.”
When the Kaiser Spoke English.
The last words of the last inter
view between the German emperor
and the late Prince Bismarck were
spoken in English. When, in
Punch’s fine phrase, the young em
peror had “dropped the pilot” Bis
marck went to the palace to take his
formal farewell and resign his seals
of office. The supreme moment ar
rived, and the great chancellor
thought that by tact and consum
mate diplomacy he might even yet
Bucceed in bending “that young
man,” as he afterward bitterly call
ed him, to his iron will. But his
art and his eloquence were in vain.
The sovereign and his minister had,
of course, conversed in German, but
when all Was over Bismarck said in
a changed voice and in English,
“Then I am in fogr wav, Hijrff” And
the German Emperor answered in
one word, “Yes.”- P.

“I will answer that bv relating an

Admiral Dewey. “When General

Trouble Enough.
When Philip Yerriil Mighels was
gathering material for his novel,
“Bruvver Jim’s Baby,” he ran across
an old miner who unconsciously
posed for his character of If-Onlv
Jim. The old man sat alone in his
cabin, where the hand of woman
had never been known, and dirt
reigned triumphant.' The conver
sation turned upon cooking.
“Yaas,” drawled the old man, “I
got me one o’ them there cookbooks
wunst, but I never could do nothin'
with it.”
“W hat was the trouble ?” asked
Mr. Mighels persuasivelv.

Y r ours Sincerely.
You weie young and I was fair,
In days that seem now long ago.
Life for us held not a care.
I, your sweetheart, you my beau.
While with story and with song
Swiftly flew the golden hours,
Time hath never yet seemed long,
When hope and love are ours.
But the years too soon stole by
And left relentless prints;
You are old, and so am I,
Light-hearted days,‘‘long since.”
You went your way, and so did I.
No vows of love were spoken,
Gave each the tribute of a sigh,
* Tho’ wounded, not heart broken.
#
Better thus in life ’tis true,
Tho’ not in song and story.
Yet memory keeps a place for you
Where halos shed their glory.
You were young and I was gay
And you my gallant beau;
Our hands now meet friendly way,
For that was long ago.
