A Pretty Speech-
Thostf who hi'ard th<* little speech
"by Editor Gibson, in presenting a
"beautiful butter dish to Capt. Lyon,
at his wedding in Cedartown, pro
nonnc-ed ir a gem.
After the ceremony and many
hearty congratulations and cordial
handshakes the editor of the Courier
approached and said:
Captain Lyon: You will pardon me
in extending to yourself and lovely
bride hearty congratulations for lin
gering long enough to discharge a
most pleasant duty which the kind
partiality of my friends and yours
makes obligatory upon me at this
time,
Your chivalrous deportment on
many a blazing battlefield —the
gleaming sword grasped in your
strong right hand, have brought
many well greaved foemen trembling
captives at your feet.
In the political arena, your intelli
gent tactfulness, superior diplomacy
and eloquent advocacy of good men
and wholesome measures, have won
for you fadeless laurels!
But compared with this conquest—
the matchless victory of which this
delectable occasion is the consumma
tion and attestation —those of the
past pale into insignificance. Stud
ed as it is, Sir, with so many bril
liant achievements, the dazzling
crown which through these years you
have most worthily worn, is here dis
placed to he succeeded by another,
the exceeding brightness of which
rivals the golden light of the noon
day sun, and the beauty of which
incurs no risk in comparison with the
flowers of the field and the stars of
the heavens. I allude to the pure
love of this pure woman.
You have captured a Queen, and
therefore, your latest and no doubt
most highly prized victory has
brought you into everlasting captivi
ty; but the servitude will be that
which true love alone levies, and that
which true love delights to perform.
Now, Sir, in behalf of Maj, J. A.
Blanco the peerless gentleman and
brave sold er—your comrade in arms
—Col. jno. u. Waddell, in peace as
gentle as a woman and as poiite as a
Chesterfiield v but in war as dauntless
as Julius G®sar, and myself. I beg
that you will accept this little gift,
not for its intrinsic value, but as a
memento of our love and esteem and
faintly expressive of our best wishes
for the future welfare and happiness
of yourself and regal captor.
May vour pathway through life
be bordered by flowers of rarest
beauty and exquisite fragrance, and
when you shall have come down to
the margin of lhe last cold stream,
may you find a golden gondola with
angv' gondoliers to row you o’er the
foaming billows to safe and happy
anchorage on the eternal shores.
The present w'as a beautiful silver
butter dish and knife.

Mmiine facts.
The bazaar arranged and gotten
up by the ladies of the Cherokee
Club, and run for thiee days, De
cember 12th, 13th and 14th, was
a great success. The club mem
bers were assisted in this work by
a great many who do not belong
to the club, but who are interested
in the Public Library building.
Liberal donations from every store
in town were given, and from sev
eral houses in Atlanta, Byck Bros ,
Black Shoe Store, Rich's, Cham
berlain Johnson Dubose Cos., Nun
nally, Kutz and Fuguzziand Love
lace were the contributors from
Atlanta.
Never did the women and young
ladies of the town look brighter, or
seem happier than during this ba
zaar, and it was no easy task to
serve the lunches, dinners and sup
pers as fast as the men wanted
them, or to stand behind the coun
ter at the “Country Store,” and
candy booth and expatiate to all
comers the value of the different
articles for ’sale. But nothing
b.iightens the countenance more
than the assurance that one is do
ing good for others, and certainly
great good will be done by the
erection ot ; public library build
ing. The exact amount made is
not known definitely, but the la
dies hope to have a nice bank ac
count of S2OO.
This bazaar is the first move
ment toward raising the necessary
amount for the library building,
but the progressive women of Car
tersville warn the men that it is
not the last —and they expect the
men to come to their aid just as
they did this time until the re
quired sum is raised.
The plan for the library build
ing also includes a rest room, and
no town ever needed anything as
much as Cartersville needs this
rest room. The combination of a
public library and a room where
our country friends and customers
can rest during a tiresome day of
shopping, is certainly a good one
and should be pushed forward to
an early completion by the entire
county and town.
It is requested that all who have
dishes sent out during the oazaar,
return them to Mr. John Banton’s
store as soon as possible,
To all those who assisted in any
wav toward the success of the
bazaar, either by donation, or
work, a great many thanks are
due. Any aid that was given was
greatly appreciated by those who
had the bazaar in charge.

Nothing brightens the counte

frank Leslie’s Popular Monthly for
January.
Tradition and the newspapers are [
so fond ot referring to Kentucky
as the dark and bloody ground,”
that at the request of the editor of
Frank Leslie’s Popular Monthly,
Mr. E. Carl Litsey, a painstaking
and accurate observer of social con
ditions, made a leisurely journey
through the most notorious dis
tricts of the state, carefully noting
what he saw and heard, and rely
ing solely upon first hand informa
tion. The story of this journey,
together with a yery accurate and
dramatic account of Kentucky
feuds and their causes, is the open
ing article in Frank Leslie’s Pop
ular Monthly for January.
This January number is unus
ually fortunate in its fiction. lan
Maclaren breaks his long silence
by contributing one of his exqui
site little sketches, “The Vision of
the Soul,” while Hamlin Garland
tells an Indian tale in his best
vein, a story which has been
elaborately illustrated in colors.
111 several other stories, notably
those by Ralph Henry Barboi r,
and E. S. Chamberlayne,
the humorous predominates, while
Miss Marion Hill’s story, “In
Honor of the Infant,” combines a
delicious sense of the ludicrous
with a half unconscious pathos
that comes from a perfect under
standing of childhood.
Among the more serious articles
in this number is a striking char
acter sketch of Chief Arthur, of
the Locomotive Engineers, the
single permanent leader of labor in
this country, and Senator Till
man’s successful defease of his
plan for the solution of the liquor
problem. Readers who are look
ing for less serious entertainment
will be much diverted by the auto
biography of David Warfield, an
actor who has the rare credit of
contributing anew character to
the American drama.

What to Cos.
There is comfort in the knowledge so
often expressed, that Dr. Kilmer’s Swamp-
Root, the great kidney remedy fulfills every
wish in curing rheumatism, pain in the
baCK, kidneys, liver, bladder and every part
of the urinary passage. It corrects inability
to hold water and scalding pain in passing
it, or bad effects following use of liquor,
wine or beer, and overcomes that unpleasant
necessity of being compelled to go often
during the day, and to get up many times
during the night. The mild and the extra
ordinary effect of Swamp-Root is soon
realized. It stands the highest for its won
derful cures of the most distressing cases.

made for tuis state only, and con

than any genera! aliiianac can be,
and is deservedly more sought after
than the old style almanacs, like
Grier’s and others, whose calcula

country. The Garden Remarks
have been prepared by the most
experienced agricultural experts in
the state, and are up to date. The
weather predictions are based not
upon mere guesswork but upon
the Signal Rtp ;from the station
of Augusta. The Almana" also
contains a Court Calendar for
every circuit in the state, the names
of the judges and the time of hold

so much of interest to residents of
this state that we advise everyone j
