which was erected about ten feet
north of the spot where the one
stood on which Will Jackson wa a
hanged, on the old gun club shoot
ing ground.
On the way to the scaffold Mid
dlebrooks possessedly conversed
with the men in the bus, showing
not the least signs of excitement.
Mr. C. A- Davis asked him if he
would take c. cigar. He said he
believed he would, and he lit it
and smoked it with apparent en
joyment all the way out.
Ascending the scaffold, he was
allowed a little while to talk, and
e\pressed himself as follows:
“Well, gentlemen, I am before
you, and it is a very solemn thing;
but I want to say—l am not going
to say but a word or two —I have
done already made my confessions
to the Man that I have got to make
them to, and what I want to say
to you is this, to never drink no
more liquor, and live closer to God
than you have ever lived- Now,
I am going in a few minutes to pay
the debt you have ali got to pay to
the good Lord. I know my debt
is settled, and I just want to say
to the congregation I hope and
trust to the Lord I will meet every
one of you in heaven, because when
the door is knocked out from under
me it aint going to be but a few
minutes until I will enter the gates
of glory. Thank God for it. Thank
God, because I have got my soul
prepared; it is ready. I don’t
dread it. I don’t feel as weak as
ary man there is here. I have got
as good a nerve this morning as I
ever had. God’s with me. I hope
to meet all of you in heaven. Now
I want to sing just a verse or two.”
He here sings a song, his voice
ringing out clear and without tre
mor.
The black cap was adjusted by
Deputy Warren Tinsley, who also
fastened the rope around the ne
gro’s neck, and as Sheriff Rob
Maxwell heard the negro’s voice
he hesitated until Middlebrooks had
delivered himself of the following
utterance: “May the Lord have
mercy on my sul this morning;”
then the trigger sprung, and the
life of Bob Middlebrooks went out.
The fall did not break Middle
brooks’ neck, but he died of stran
gulation. In 22 minutes after his

fall he Was ‘‘cut down, being pro
nounced dead by the physicians.
There were about 1200 specta
tors in the crowd, which was en
tirely orderly. The bagging, put
up as an enclosure, was ripped
away with knives soon after the
crowd began to gather, and noth
ing intervened to obstruct the view
of the lookers on.
The public is familiar with the
crime for which Middlebrooks was
hung. He had had a difficulty
with another negro, and Bailiff Reid
had gone to his house after night
to arrest him accompanied by Mar
shal Parris. Parris forced his way in
the house at one door, and Middle
brooks ran out at the other, with a
double-barrel shotgun in his hand.
The gun fired in the dark, and Bai
liff Reid received the charge, dying
from his wound soon after.
Middlebrooks was drunk, and
plead this as the cause of the kill
ing, saying he didn’t intend to kill
the officer, the gun juts going off
as it was laying across his arm. \
This might nave been a mitigating j
phase in his case, but for the dam
aging testimony of his granddaugh
ter, who said that he laid two shells
on the mantelpiece, saying, “Here
are two shells, but one of them is
enough to get my man.’’
TJiere were strong fears that the
be lynched, so rank
was roe feeling against him, and
Middlebrooks was sent to the At
lanta <s jail for safe keeping,
The case was tenaciously con
tested 'by Col. Conyers, who car- 1
ried it to the Supreme Court,
which finally affirmed the lower
court’s decision, requiring a resen
tencing of the prisoner.
