CONDITION OF TRADE.
REVIEW OF BVSIKESS FOB THE PAST WEEK
—FILURES, ETC.
R. G. Dun & Co.’s weekly review ol
trade says: The state of the trade has not
materially altered during the past week,
though the (hange of weather has pro
duced much temporary improvement iD
some lines, and in the others trade is less
satisfactory than a week ago. The vol
ume of domestic tiade appears well sus
tained. In the iron trade also the siua
i ion has not materially improved, and at
Pittsburg prices are again lower. The de
mand for sheet iron is unusually good,
and for nails a trifle better. The’window
glass trade is active, and a fourth advance
in prices within three months has been
ordered, but flint glass works at Pitts
burg are curtailing production.
THE STOCK MARKET
has not changed any during the past week
in any material respect, the average ol
prices being substantially the same.
The removal of fears concerning possible
exports of gold, the rapid rise of foreign
exchange, indications that purchases on
foreign account now exceed the sale ol
securities, all tend to make absorption ol
money by the treasury less observed. It
may be added that the decrease in the ac
tivity of trade throughout the country
tends to release larger amounts of money
than have been expected to return to this
center at present. But with bank re
serves, remarkably narrow for the season,
speculation for an advance :n stocks it
checked by fear of artificial string
ency in money, as it is naturally also by
the approach of the season of open navi
gation without satisfactory settlements
among the transporting lines. Business

try during the last week number for

arc being robbed by the boards of trad<

raised or lowered the price of wheat as
they pleased and held the starving farmers
at their mercy. It was time, he declared,
that the big gambling hell in Chicago

armers rose in their might this might
oe accomplished W. 8. Grove,
ounty lecturer, followed in
a similar strain during the day.
It developed that there were three fac
tions in tne convention, one favoring an
indorsement of Albert Shcffer, the re
publican candidate for governor, the sec
rad wanted Merriam, the present gov

Alliance to break away from a!! parties.
They wanted to place Ignatius Donneflv

A CURIOBITY.
SCIENTIFIC MEN BAFFLED BY THE CASE OF
A PARALYTIC.
An Augusta, Ga., dispatch says: Tht
scientific men in this section are now
deep in inquiry over the wonder of the
mental world of the 19th century.
Major Perry, a mulatto, has been
discovered a few miles from Augusta.
He is veyy illiterate, and has been para
Ivzetl for a number of yean, yet, while in
a trance or profound slumber, engages in
ministerial services, reciting hymns of his
own composition, and singing them. He
repeats the text verbatim, as given in the
scriptures, giving the book and verse and
preaching an edifying sermon therefrom.
When the trance passes off, he is entirely
unconscious of what he has said or done
during his sleep. This is baffling the skill

The Practical-Joke Fiend.
Every now and then the practical-joke
fiend offers an additional argument in fa
vor of his extermination without trial by
jury. He is now to the fore with two
reasons why Judge Lynch should give
some of his most pressing attentions to
him.
One instance in point is reported from
Paris. The D’Oyley family in that city
are in mourning for the loss of their eldest
son. The other day some soulless scoun
drel amused himself by inviting a mob of
people, in the name of the family, to a
ball at their house. At an early hour car
riages filled with guests arrived. Many
of the invited, thinking it a carnival ball,
came in fancy dress. Kings, cardinals, i
clowns, merry andtews, Watteau shep
herdesses ami milkmaids swarmed to the
house of mourning, and the procession of
guests continued until nearly midnight
before the police succeeded it dispers
ing it.
At about the same time this was happen
ing in Paris, another so-called joker was
airing his criminal jocularity in New
York. He inserted an advertisement in a
newspaper calling, in the name of a.down
town business man, for the services of
several poor, but well educated girls as
amanuenses. The result was that lntn
died* of |>oor creatures traveled miles to
discover that they had been hot.xed.
They wasted their time, spent some of
their precious pennies for ear-fare, and
suffered the pangs of cruel disappoint
ment, in order to provide a scoundrel
with the pleasure of making a fool of
them and a blackguard of himself. To
say that hanging is too good for such
miscreants as these is to express the just
resentment their wanton outrages provoke
very mildly indeed. The only punish
ment which we can imagine as adequate
to their offeuses would be to slowly tor
ture them to death with their own prac
tical jokes.
Value of Earth Worms.
The weight of earth worms bring to the
surface yearly is enormous. Darwin esti
mated that worms, by swallowing earth
for the sake of the vegetable matter it
contains and forming castings, bring to
the surface as much ns ten tons of earth
per annum on an acre. Worms are great
promoters of vegetation by boring, per
forating and loosening the soil, and ren
dering it pervious to rains and the fibres
of plants, by drawing straws and stalks
of leaves and twigs into it, and. most of
all, by throwing up such infinite numbers
of lumps of earth called worm casts,
which form a fine manure for grain and
grass. The earth without worms would
soon become cold, hard-bound, void of
fermentation and consequently sterile:
this has occurred in many eases where the
worms have been either accidentally or
intentionally destroyed, and the fertility
of the soil thus lost has only been re
stored when the worms Had again col
lected and resumed their fertilizing work.
Taking up one's crosses means simply
that you are to go the road which you see
to be the straight one; carrying whatever
you find is given you to carry, as well and
stoutly as you can.

A BAD SPELL.
A merchant's clerk wrote a check for forty dollars, and spelled the numerical
adjective “ f-o-u-r-t-y.” His employer directed his attention to the error, with
the remark, “You seem to have hud a bad spell this morning.” To which the clerk
replied, “Sure enough ; I’ve left out the “g-h.” Let us hope the clerk will still
further amend his orthography, meanwhile. If anybody is suffering from a “bad
spell ” of headache, superinduced by constipation, over-eating or other indiscre
tion, let that person ask his druggist for Dr. Pierce's Pleasant Purgative Pellets.
They are entirely vegetable In composition, and are prompt and effective in
action. They are specific in all derangements of the liver, stomach and bowels.
They arc strongly cathartic or mildly laxative according to size of dose. Un
equaled as a Liver Pill. Smallest, cheapest, easiest to take. One tiny, Sugar
coated Pellet a dose.
