The cold wave is staying with us
too long to make its visit pleasant.
We are hoping that March will go
out like a lamb, for she certainly
has been playing Hon so far.
Those who had planted small
seeds before* this spell will have tin*
pleasure of replanting.
Those whose garden fences were
not in a condition for early planting
are laughing at their fortunate es
cape and saying, “I told you so; 1
knew’ this kind of weather was
coming, etc.”
Hob Saxon’s face wears a perpetu
al smile. Another bouncing baby
girl has come to gladden the house
hold.
To make room for the new arri
vals, some young men can procure
bargains by applying before the
older ones are disposed of. Delays
are dangerous.
Mrs. Shockley, from your town,
has been spending some time at
Grassdale proper.
Mr. Robert Renfroe, who has been
threatened with pneumonia, was on
our streets again last Sabbath.
l)r. Battle and his daughter, Miss
May, went to Atlanta last Wednes
day to attend the closing exercises
of the Southern Medical college, re
turn home on Thursday and report
a nice time, even with the inclem
ent night.
We now have another full-fledged
doctor, in the person <>f W. Bat
tle, who was one ot the graduating
class of the Southern Medical col
lege Wednesday night last. The
whole neighborhood has looked for
ward w ith pride to this time. One
and all offer our heartiest congratu
lations. No matter w here his lot
may he cast, we shall ever watch
his upward strides in the profession
he lias chosen with much interest,
pointing to him one of our hoys.
The first quarterly meeting of
Pine I.og circuit was at Rest’s
chapel on Saturday and Sunday
last, Rev. Worley, P. K. being
present, who preached two very
able sermons. The people are well
pleased with him.
A certain captain started to
preaching on Sunday last, but for
some cause changed his mind and
spent the day at a most charming
retreat.
Mr. Waldron, from Buford, called
upon Miss May Shelton and also
attended the prayer meeting at Mr.
Gibbons’.
Our dale is all excitement and ex
pectation. Going to have a real
marriage this side of the woods.
Old, young, little and big are in
vited*. Crofton.
FAIRVIKW.
We are having plenty of rain and
cold weather.
Wheat crops have been very much
damaged by the recent freeze.
Farmers are nearly all up with
their work.
Snow came down with its beauti
ful wings last Friday.
A couple of young gents and la
dies started to our new school house
to attend the organization of a .Sun
day school but failed to get there.
Messrs. John Jolly and Rob TafTs
horse was killed by a tree, in front
of Mr. V. W. Davis', Sunday after
noon.
Miss Addie Lawson spent the af
ternoon with Miss Alice Davis. Rob
F’s heart was made to rejoice once
more.
A married lady kindly got off
with Will Trippe Sunday about his
girl, and Will would not go to see
her Sunday.
There is a great deal of sickness
in our community.
Little El by Shaw, son of L. F.
Shaw, is very sick. We trust he
will soon be up and ready to take
his place in school.

The wind for the past week has
been very unpleasant —mixed with
sleet and snow. But notwithstand
ing the inclemency of the weather
business has been quite brisk. The
miners have gotten out a consider
able amount of ore, and that of the
very best quality—so say the most
experienced men of mineral.
Mr. Brooks, of Baltimore, is with
Mr. Bergman, and they are having
a good deal of work done in devel
oping the wealth around this com
munity. Col. Parkes was with
them on last Monday and Dr. Gaz
zam, of Cartersville, and Mr. Petty
of New York, were in our town
last Sunday, the guests of Mr. Berg
man, who is stopping with Rev.
John W. Edwards. I hope soon to
see the work increase until it will
become necessary to have a furnace
erected here.
Have a copy of the Adairsville j
Ledger, which is quite a spicy,
newsy pajier, well gotten up in ev
ery respect. Hope they will suc
ceed.
Saw’ an old relic belonging to
Mrs. Edwards the other day. It
was an oven ow ned by her great
grandfather and it has been handed
down fr< in one generation to anoth
er and used all the time, and it is
as good and bright as you ever saw
one. It is of a metal that don’t
rust.
Mr. Kitchens is hauling in quite
an abundance of lumber, that Is be
ing shipped to different points.
Horry to state that Mr. Kitchens got
badly hurt at the mill, but is con
sidered better at tlds writing.

We are informed that Mrs. Ken
ning is quite sick.
Mrs. O.C. Bradford is worse again,
but we hope she will be better soon.
Last Sunday Sam Fortenberry
brought Miss Sallie Yancey to
’Squire .1. L. Vaughan’s residence,
and after a few pointed questions
and pertinent answers, they were
pnaiounced husband and wife and
went their way rejoicing. May
their rejoicing continue always.
Mr. Doss, of Waiesca, is visiting
Mr. Franks. He is under treat
ment by 1 >r.. Richey, and ids speedy
recovery is very probable.
ltobt. E. Adair, after graduating
and receiving his diploma at the
recent commencement of Southern
Medical college, returned home
last week. We congratulate our
young friend, and wish for him a
long career, bright with prosperity
and usefulness.
The congregations who heard
ltev. A. G. Worley, the new Metho
dist presiding elder, were edified
and instructed. Consequently he
made a fine impression on those
who heard him. Congregations
were good notwithstanding the
cold weather.

The weather has been very cold
for the past few weeks, and last
Friday the snow, “the beautiful
snow,” came down in showers. For
a while we thought grim winter
had set in for good, hut the old
adage, “March comes in like a lion
and goes 1 out like a lamb,” or vice
versa. So far, the lion has roared
considerably, without finding the
lamb.
Col. Roe Isbell has painted his
residence, and it’s quite a neat job,
considering the colonel did it him
self.
Master Pat Wheat Hall was quite
sick a few days last week, but is
convalescing.
The news gatherer has been
gleaming in our midst and this is
What we find. Two of our popular
boys wore invited to a party four
miles away. They had only one
mule, but surmounting this difficul
ty, they rumaged in boxes, barrels
and closets, at last, finding a “cover
let” and spreading this over
“illinium” they started. But 10,
they lost their way, and passing off
as a couple running away to get
married, inquired the w ay to Squire
Whittaker’s. At a late hour they
arrived at the ’Squire’s and their
appearances iietraying them, the
fair hostess asked, had they “rode
one mule?”
Mr, J. M. Arnold is building two
rooms to his mother’s residence,
and when completed will be quite a
neat residence.
Miss Willie Dodd lias a splendid
school at’ Reynolds’ ford, and the
patrons are well pleased with her
as teacher.
We will have a mail route
through by this office, the first of
July, receiving mail daily. This
will be quite a treat to our people.
It is reported that an apron party
is on the tapis.

Mr. Zack Pickard and Miss Ida
Adams were married on the first
Sunday at the home of Mr. Jim
Pickard. Cedar Creek tosses the
good luck shoe.
Mr. Tom Layton is very sick.
Brother Buford was here on the
first Saturday and Sunday to fill his
appointment Only a few had the
courage to face the blizzard to go
to hear him.
The wheat fields present a sickly
appearance. The crop is greatly

ing blue over the prospect.
The young men of our communi
ty have a novel method of “giving
the cow a nubbin’ to catch thecalf.”

GUM SPUING.
We hud some very cold weather
last week. The farmers think
wheat and oats are injured badly by
the cold weather. The fruit trees
were In bloom, we think the peach
es are neariy aii killed.
The farmers are preparing their
land for another crop. Mr. Bell, of
this place, planted some corn a
week ago.
Mr. ltobt. Whitworth, one of
Gum Spring’s young men, is at
Reeves station teaching* school.
We hope Robert is getting along
all right and enjoying his work.
Rev. A. J. Mann preached an in
teresting sermon at the Presby
terian chiftch last Sunday.
Last Saturday and Sunday at
Host’s chapel the first quarterly
meeting was held. On Sunday Rev.
A. G. Worley preached an interest
ing sermon.
Rev. Mr. Woody will preach at
Richards’ academy next Sunday
evening at three o’clock.
One of the Pine Log boys was
seen passing Gum Spring last Sun
day evening mounted on a two
wheel chariot pulling the strings
over old Kit’s back. We supposed
he was on his way to the “cottage.”
The party at Mr. Carr’s last Tues
day night was quite a success.
Misses Minnie Richey, Lily Pea
cock and Minnie King, of Pine Log,
were present.
Tiie school at the academy is
holding out very well.
Mrs. Hayes was sick last week,
but is better and able to attend to
her school. Miss Lula Vincent
taught while Mrs. Hayes was sick.
Mr. S. D. Hendricks, of this place,
is building anew house close to the
spot where his house got burnt last

KINGSTON.
Our farmers can do but little ex
cept haul fertilizers, and from the
great number of wagons at the
depot I fear that when the fleecy
staple is gathered the guano agents
will get the most of the crop and
our toiling farmers will exclaim
how foolish we were in not raising
more breadstuffs and less cotton.
The wife of Burnett Herrington,
colored, died very suddenly Satur
day morning, March Bth, only lived
a few minutes after the attack. It
is thought to have been paralysis
of the brain. She was buried Sun
day at 3 o’clock p. m., Rev. 1).
Strickland, of Marietta, assisted by
Rev. J. J. Wilson, pastor of the A.
M. E. church at this place, conduc
ted the funeral services. Her hus
band deserves great credit for the
nice manner in which he had her
buried, procured a fine case and
put her away very genteel.
A little son of Mr. Jos. Mayson is
very ill at Dr. Mayson’s, his grand
father. The trouble is pneumonia.
1 hope the little sufferer will soon
lie on foot again.
Miss Sallie Lowry, of Atlanta,
visited her father, Rev. J. M.
Lowry, last week.
Miss Ida Lowry is in Lexington,
Ky., attending school of stenogra
phy and type writing. Would la l
glad to see more of our young
ladies preparing themselves for
profitable business.
Capt. li. 8. Payne, civil engineer
on our new prospective railroad to
Canton or some point on the Mari
etta and North Georgia railroad,
was in town Monay and started out
to view the route via Beasley’s gap.
He thinks he will finish the recon
noissanee and be able to make his

By virtue of an order from the court of ordi
nary of Bartow county, Georgia, will be sold, on
the first Tuesday in April, 1880, at the court
house door in said county, between the legal sale
hours, the tract of land in said county whereon
Mary A.Schooler resided at thetime of her death,
which includes what is known as the Eliza M.vnatt
place, containing three hundred and ten acres
more or less, being the whole lots of land Nos.
three hundred and twenty-two and three hundred
and twenty-three (322and 323) in the twenty-sec
ond (22) district and second (2nd)section, in said
county, except ten acres which were sold from
one of said lots, prior to April Ist, 1872, and
which ten acres lie near the Tennessee road.
The said 310 acres lying and being in said coun
ty, and on the Tenuessee road, near Pine Log

will be sold as unreturned wild land for its taxes
for the year 1889 Fi fa issued by J. F. Lion, tax
collector of said eounty, and sold as required by
