THE LICHEN.
Suggested by an old wire basket containing
niosKce, lichens, and a green tendril, which hung
from the wall of my room
The law of affinity governs in animal life, and
!; the floral world, why not sympathy? The
lichen had its germ life in the granitic age, and
for ensue lived without companionship. Then
followed the violet, the next in order, till now we
) ia ve a limitless kingdom of floral beauty.
The lichen pined, ami waited long,
llpon the barren granite gray;
It felt the col , the bitter wrong,
Till warmer germs took root one day,
T hrough pympathy!
The moss, the fern, and then the palm
And grasses green o’erspread the plain;
The mountain lent its giant arm
To give protection from the rain,
Through sympathy !
A gentle wind from isle away,
Mid seas embroidered by its shore.
From slumber woke the dreaming day,
Where angry clouds deep shadows bore.
Through sympathy!
lire w hile through changing seasons grew
A small wee flower of sweet perfume—
A violet robed in deepest blue. •
To dissipate surrounding gloom.
Through sy input ay !
In orient chambers curtained o’er
Aurora rising from repose,
From crimson skies a ribbon tore.
To bind the lichen to the rose.
Through sympathy!
And now through all the earth is seen
In Flora’s Kingdom every hue—
Roseate petals, leaflets green,
Which till- poor lichen ’round it drew,
Through sympathy !
There’s many a human lichen ouml,
Who pines in secret arid alone,
Till some good angels visit ’round
brings back the spirit v' hicli has flown.
Through sympathy!
in every woodland flow rets wild
And budding vines’ neath shadows grow;
T lie bud, the bloom, the flower and child.
Alike the winter’s blight will know,
Through sympathy !
tin where we will, pause where we may.
On memory’s wings o’er wastes of year,
Some tendril creeping, lichen stray.
Will make us shed unconscious tears.
Through sympathy !

I>is. Starkey & Paien’s Treatment by In
halation.
1 .aurensville, (S. f’.,) Herald, Nov. 4, 1887.
“Our friend, Rev. A. Moore, has secured
the general agency, for the l nited States
and Canada, of the justly celebrated and
somewhat new preparation known as
‘Compound Oxygen.' The proprietors
and discoverers of this ‘ Home Treatment,
Dim. Starkey & Palen, of Philadelphia,
could not have selected a better or more
efficient mail to take charge of so wide
mid important territorrv than Mr.
Moore, and they are to be congratulated
upon their good fortune as well as their
good judgment in making so judicious
a selection. Mr. Moore a few years ago,
it will be remembered, was supposed to
be in the last stages of consumption,
and there was scarcely a hope of his re
covery entertained by the most sanguine
among his friends, lie began the use of
the Compound Oxygen, and within a few
weeks a most miraculous restoration
was tin* result, and he is to-day a living
proof of its great curative powers.’*
EXTRACTS FROM A LECTURE
Helivered at Waterloo, S. C., by A. A\ .
Moore, on Prs. Starkey & Palen s well
tried Treatment, tl.cCompouud Oxygen.
Since the discovery of Oxygen as a
distinct element m nature, and as the
life-giving element in the air no necessary
And indispensable that no animal can
live without it, there has been a firmly
fixed opinion among scientists and phy
sicians that it could be made a powerful
curative agent in diseases, and a restorer
of vitality.
Amid the humane and beneficent dis
coveries, so pervasive and far-reaching
in their influence, stands the discovery
of Compound Oxygen as a powerful cura
tive agent and natural revitalize!*, abso
lutely free from the disastrous effects of
stimulants and deadly narcotics.
About nineteen years ago an eminent
physician in Philadelphia, of high pro
fessional attainments and of marked
genius, was led to observe the surprising
power of the Oxygen Treatment in obsti
nate cases within his own practice.
Close observation and patient study of
the healing power of the agent, led him
to the conclusion that there was in this
simple agent illimitable capabilities of
healing and healthfulness, and he delib
erately formed a fixed purpose of develop
ing the remedy to the utmost possible
perfection, and of making it known to
the world.
He abandoned a lucrative practice and
devoted all the resources at his com
mand, means, reputation, influence, skill
and genius, to the work. The steady
and substantial success attending the
office administration confirmed him in
his conviction nnd strengthened his pur
pose. As all the sick, even in Philadel
phia, couldn’t go to the officp, much less
was it possible for distant sufferers to go,
he bent all his energies nnd skill to the
great problem of fixing the Compound
Oxygen in chemical solution, and retain
ing it there in i*s purity and potency
until disengaged by heating. This mar
vellous feat he has most signally accom
plished, as is attested by chemists of
world-wide fame, and by thousands of
persons who have been healed of in
veterate ad obstinate maladies in the
quietness of their homes thousands of
miles away from the office.
It is now conceded that the “Home
Treatment.” ordinarily, is as affective as
the “(iffice Treatment,” so that the pure
life-giving Oxygen, through the benefi
cent achievement of science, being firmly
Held in its own solution, is being trans
ported all over the continent and across
the ocean, ready to be disengaged and
to dispense its boon to the sick. If you
are suffering from dyspepsia, catarrh,
consumption, or other maladies, you
need not undergo the annoyance, dis
comfort, fatigue, and expense of a kmg
journey; you can summon the life-bear
ing element to your own bed-chamber,
and there inhale iits vigor and ex pen
ence the new and delightful sensations of
conscious progress health ward.
Literary men and women, scientists,
physicians, artists, lawyers, judges, sena
tors, editors, ministers of the gospel, in
all the denominations, bear unconstrain
ed and cordial testimony to the genuine
ness and potency of Compound Oxygen
as a curative agent of unsurpassed
power, and an unrivalled revitalize!- —
a revitalizer in very truth worthy of the
name; not wearing out the organs but
adding to them; giving vigor without
lassitude, buoyancy without depression,
energy without remorse, and life with
out the insidious presence of death.
If Oxygen be indeed the life-giving
element of the atmosphere, and if the
life is in the blood, and Oxygen is the
vital power in the blood, you see at
once that when the blood becomes defi
cient in Oxygen the whole organism feels
the lack, and the great nerve centres,
which supply the life-forces become im
paired, dwindle, and finally waste away.
Through enforced respiration by inhala
tion, the Compound Oxygen, which is
Oxygen and Nitrogen scientifically
ozonized, is brought into contact with
the blood. Through chemical action
it combines with the carbons, waited
tissues, and debris, and casts them out,
thus purifying the blood. And not only
so, but by oxygenating the blood—en
riching the blood—freighting it with a
precious cargo of new life, it deposits life
substance all along its circuit, in the
nerves, muscles, tissues, organs, so that
the divine mechanism, the marvellous
organism, in its minute and multitudi
nous parts, responds with avidity to the
powerful reinforcement coming in to help
resist and overcome and expel the in
vader. This potent organized force acts
all the more felicitously from its being
under the conditions of a peculiar, vital
magnetism. Nowyou see why all chronic
diseases in which the life-forces have
been diminished, and all nervous diseases
in which any of the great nerve centres
have been impaired, enfeebled, or perver
ted, are amenable to the Compound
Oxygen Treatment.
But apart from theory and the reve
lations of science and the teachings of
therapeutics, there stands the ten thous
and facts of cures—many of these of the
most obstinate and inveterate maladies,
battling all medical skill —cures attested
by unconstrained and grateful testimo
nials from men and women well known
in the nation, as well as from thousands
of humble sufferers well known in their
respective local communities.
Overworked business and professional
men, invalids suffering from nervous
prostration, convalescents whose re
turn to health is slow and uncertain, and
all with whom vitality, from any cause,
is running low, will find in this new treat
ment a revitalizing agent of singular
power and efficiency.
For the cure of consumption, asthma,
bronchitis, catarrh, dyspepsia, hay
fever, headache, ozoena, paralysis, de
bility, and all chronic and nervous disor
ders, by a natural process of revitali
zation.
