Mr. Cooper, the new proprietor of
ttie St. James hotel, will take charge
to-day. He is an old hotel man
and thoroughly understands the

Major L. C. Hess, the former pro
prietor of the Bt. James, has moved
to his farm near Cass Station. He is
a substantial citizen and a gentleman
of the old school. We part with him
reluctautly and wish him success as
a farmer.
Bruce Thedford left yesterday for
Chattanooga, where be goes to enter
business on bis own account. He has
for several years been with R. VV.
Satterfield, and has proven himself
honest and capable. Bruce is a busi
ness man and will succeed any
where.
Some valuable property of the
Tumiin f state will bo sold by J. M.
Neel as Receiver, io-day. Also some
property belonging to the estate of
Warren Akin deceased will be sold
by J. VV. Akin as Executor, among
other things the law office now occu
pied by J, VV. Akin and some law
books, now in the office.
Couuty Court convenes this morn
ing, Judge Tumiin presiding. Num
erous cases are to be tried. This
court is proving to be popular and
will relieve the superior court of
much tedeous and troublesome liti
gation. Judgo Tumiin and Solicitor
Conner are both faithful and compe
tent officers, and busines- is despatch
ed with ease and rapidity.
Cartersville is to be blessed with

difficulties of a serious nature to re
port. Everybody was in a good
humoi, and the time passed as mer
rily as a marriage bell. May every
Christmas pass as pleasantly.

The American will beissued un
der the new management next week,
and will don its new home-made
dress. Its circulation is already rap
idly increasing, and we expect to
s* ud it as a regular visitor to a large
majority of the families of Bartow
county. We make no extravagant
promises for the new year, but will
do our best to meet the wants of an
intelligent reading public.
Dr. G. A. Numtaly, the superin
tendent of the church building de
partment of the southern Baptist
church, filled the pulpit at the first
Baptist church in the city last Sun
day. llis theme, ‘'Peace on Earth,
Goi and will to Men,” was (specialty
appropriate to the day, and wTa^han
dled in a-masterly w ay. Dr. Nun
naiy is one of the most eloquent
preachers of the Baptist denomina
tion in the south, and is doing a
grand work in helping to build up
churches for the poor, and give the
gospel to. the heathens of our own
country.
The ordinary says 1883 w'as the
dullest year for marriages he has
seen for seventeen yea rtf, Will some
body offer a reason for this? Is il
hard times? Are’the boys all gone
west? Or are the girls satisfied to
live alone? The leap year will af
ford a solution of the last question,
and it is to he hoped that the girls
* ill improve each shining hoyr, and
make the most of their opportuni
ties. This is a “woman’s rights”
year.
Rev. F. M. Daniel, the recently
elected pastor of the first Baptist
church at this place, will move to
Cartersville this week and occupy
the residence recently occupied by
Dr. F. William Memmler, on Mark
et street. The church is fortunate to
have secured yie services of such an
able preacher and true Christian as
Mr. Daniel, and he will receive
warm welcome at their hands. lie
will fill the pulpit next Sunday and
regularly thereafter.

der the superintendence of petitioners, or a
majority of them, in such place and on such
day or days, as they or a majority of them
may deem expedient, and all sui seriptiou to
said capital stock shall be paid in cash or its
equivalent iu value, in installments, as called
for by the board of directors.
That the affairs of said corporation
may be managed by petitioners until, perma
nent directors are elected as hereinafter
provided, itnd, iu case of the death oi refusal
to act of any one of said petitioners, theofhers
shall have power to act as such.
That said provisional board of directors
shall, so soon afa r the granting of the char
ter herein prayed for, as may he deemed ex

such time and place as they deem proper,
which meeting, when assembled, shall pro
ceed to elect a permanent board of directors,

corporation; to appoint aud remove all subor
dinates, officers, agents and servants of said
company, and shall have power to do and per
form all such acts as lie may be authorized to
do by the by.hnvs of said corporation.
The stockholders of said corporation shall
be vested with the exclusive power to estab
lish, alter and amend all by-laws, rules and
regulations of said corporation that they may
deem proper, unless they {hall, by vote, dele
gate said power to the directors of said corpo
ration in which event said board of diieetors
shall have aud exercise said power.
That in all meetings of the stockholders of
said corporation for the transaction of busj
siness, each share of stock shall entitle the
holder to one vote, which vote may lie east
in person or Jay proxy, and said shares of
stock shall be oom-ideied as personal proper
ly, and shall be transferable in such manner
as may be provided by the by-laws of said
Company.
The board of directors shall, by order to be
inteied on the minutes of their proceedings,
direct the president to issue certificates of

or dispose of his stock iu said corporation,
he shall allow said corporation the preference,

fourth Monday ip June, 1886, aud of each
