Mr. H. Swnpsel, Ottawa, KantML
Writes : “ Dr. S. B. Hartmar Jfc Cm,
Columbus, O.—Gentlemen : I have suf
fered for seven years ; have tried everv
thing and many physicians, and all have
failed. I went to Pittsburgh, and while
there fell on the street, my breath seemed
to leave my lungs, and numbness over
power me. I determined to give Peruna
and Manalin a fair trial. I used four bot
tles of each, and my trouble left, never, I
hope, to return. I left Pittsburgh three
weeks ago for Kansas, and thought, as I
was going to anew country, I had belter
take a bottle of Manalin with me, on
account of bad water, etc. I arrived
here with one-half bottle. I found one
of my friends in a pretty bad condition.
The doctors were treating her for chills
and fever. I did not know what her
trouble was, though I persuaded her to
use the Manalin. She did 60, and the
first day she was up doing her work.
Now this seems strange, but it is, never
theless, a candid truth She used it all,
and has never had cause to lie down
during the day since she took the first
three doses.”
A Caso that was Pronounced In
curable.
Miss C. C. Peck, 714 Jackson street,
Milwaukee, Wis , writes : “Dr. S. B.
Hartman & Cos. —Gentlemen : I take
great pleasure in stating to you the benefit
I received from your valuable Peruna.
I have been suffering for about fifteen
years with a severe cough and bronchitis
(so the doctors call it). I was treated by
different physicians, and spent considera
ble money for different kinds of patent
medicines, but received no benefit what
ever. Dr. Fox, of this city, claimed I
had consumption, and there was no hope
for me ever getting better. I was so had
that I coughed almost continually. Mrs.
llenry Ellis, a friend of mine, induced
me to try your Peruna. 1 am happy
to say I began to notice a change after I
had taken my second bottle. I took
eight bottles in all, and now I feel like a
new woman. If it hadn’t been for Pe
runa I think I would be in my grave
now. It is a Avonderful remedy, and I
recommend it to all my friends.”
Messrs. Baker Bros., Mt. Vernon, 0.,
write : “ Your Peruna sells Avell. Cus
tomers speak of it as being a good medi
cine.”
Mr. Daniel R. Spry, Portsmouth, 0.,
writes: “I have a good trade in Peruna
It sells well and gives satisfaction.”

THE BID BOY.
“Well, well, don’t look so condemned
solemn, ” said the grocery man to the bad
boy, as he came in and leaned against
the show case, put his hands in his {lock
ets, and looked down at the floor with bis
eyes‘sot.’ “What’s the matter of you ?
What you thinking of ?”
“I was just thinking and wondering if
it was right for parents to encourage
boys by telling them cf the glorious fu
ture that is before an American boy, the
prospect that he may one day be presi
dent of the United States. I think it
would be better to encourage boys by
pointing out to them how, by conducting
themselves right, they can escape the
fate of running for president. What glo
ry is there in being president? If a
president amounts to anything he gets
shot, and if a decent man runs for presi
dent, he is abused worse than a pick
pocket, Washington was all right
enough, because his opponents never
found out any of his cussedness, and if
they did they dassent tell of it, for fear
he would take a shot gun and blow ’em
full of buck shot. But the presidents,
since I can remember, have been pretty
tuff, or got murdered. No sir, when pa
tells me to brace up and be a man, and
some day I may be president, I sty ‘Pa,
I ain’t a going to be that kind of a man. ’
Politics are demoralizing the boys worse
than anything. Some of us boys don’t
know whether we are democrats or re
publicans, because both parties have
hired us to carry torches. Say, what is
the best thing to cure a prohibitionist’s
headache?”
“Cure a prohibitionist’s headache?”
asked the groceryman in astonishment,
“what does a prohibitionist want with a
headache? Who has got one?”
“O, pa. I suppose he had the worst
headache in this country, and all from
prohibition. Pa has belonged to both
parties, during the campaign, and up to
election he was pretty sober, for him,
but all last week, when Blaine avhs elect
ed one day and Cleveland was elected
the next day, it was too much for pa, as
he had to change parties about twice a
day, and he got so full he stuttered. He
shouted until he got hoarse, and came
home one night with a rooster tied by
one leg, and he tied it to the bed post.
Pa was feeling funny, and when ma
asked him what he brought home he
told her it was a rooster he had been
carrying around all the evening, and she
would find it in the morning tied to the
bed post. I thought it was time pa was
broke of politics, so I took a big rat
which we caught in a trap, ar.d untied
the rooster, and tied the string to the
rat, and left it there. When pa woke up
• -v
in the morniug he woke ma up and said
now he would show her the rooster he
earned around all night, and he took
hold of the string and pulled, and said:
‘Come up here, chicky,’ and he pulled
the rat right up on the bed. Well, you’d
a dide to see pa look at that rat, and I
know you Avould have dide to see ma get
scared. She made one jump and landed
on the bureau, and yelled nine kinds of
murder. Pa looked at the rat sort of du
bious, and rolled over, and looked the
other way, and then lie wanted to satis
fy himself that it was not a rooster, so he
pulled it up again, aud the rat ran under
the bed-clothes, and then pa had rest
enough and jumped out of bed too quick.
Then you ought to have heard the tem
perance lecture ma gave pa. She told
him if he had got so far gone that he
would carry a house rat around in a pro
cession half the night, thinking it was a
rooster, he was in a good condition to go
to the lunatic asylum, aud unless he
'Wore off drinking from that minute she
wAild make application to have him shut
upU>y the authorities. Well, when ma
get! excited she makes pa pay attention,
a took a solemn oath that he
wupld join the prohibition party, and he
dill, and he has not drank, a drop for
Uaree days, and he is offul nervous, aud
nis head aches so every hair stands right
up straight. I have been putting pound
ed ice on his head two nights, as he has
got so I think I can tell him with safety
how the rat came to be there. ”
“Well, I am glad your pa is going to
be a man again,” said the grocery-man,
but you boys shouldn’t have anything to
do with politics. You are too young,
aud it might injure your reputations.”
“Yes, but we are taught that the high
est ambition of man is to be president,
and that we may one day occupy that
exalted office that Washington once held,
but we can’t get there without being pol
iticians. can we? Haven’t we got to
learn to pack caucuses, and run in fel
lows that have ;’t been naturalized, and
lie about fellows that belong to the other
party? Why, in every school in town
the boys are divided into democrats and
republicans, aud we fight each other just
like men, and find out mean things boys
have done, and tell of it, and we are
growing up to be model politicians. The
teachers laugh about it, aud I don't s< e
as there is anything wrong. We have
got all the boys that ever stole anything,
or robbed orchards, spotted, and their
records will come up against them if
they ever run for office. O, us boys are
learning pretty fast from the men who
think they are setting a good example
before the rising generation. . But since
we have read how mean Blaine and
Cleveland are, in the papers, you can’t
get any of us boys to have ambition to
be president. I don’t think there is a
boy iu our sch<x>l that is mean enough to
run for president, when he gets old
enough.”
“Well, you boys are on the high road
to the devil,” said the groceryman.
“You are learning all the meanness of
politics, and will bring up iu the peniten
tiary.”
“Yes, and we are learniag it from our
respected fathers, and brothers, and un
cles, and neighbors,” said the boy.
“As long as they countenance such
demoralizing deviltry in politics, what
can you expect of the boys?” And the
bad boy went out to thump a boy that
belonged to the opposite party while the
groceryman sat down on a barrel head
and began to wonder what the country
1 would come to the boys growing up be-
I Ctiiue as mean as the men who are run
uxu 8 politics now.
