CLEAVING CHEEK
That Open the Hurr o t Uiatar*

Detroit Free Press. *
A young man living in Tuscalooaa, Ala. t
baa conveyed the humorous idea of gar
nering in the gorgeous album the auto
graphs of the leading humorous vtriters
of the country. So he labored long and
hard at a letter inviting contributions to
his album, and then sent the book swing
ing round the circle among the humorists
of the country.
The young man has been very success
ful in gathering in specimens. The book
has numerous illustrations by artists of
Puck and other papers, all depicting a
man of mammoth cheek in various pos
tures, and all dedicated in burning words
to Ralph. On one page is depicted in
glowing colors a huge and ferocious sav
age assaulting a weak, frightened young
individual with prominent jaw bones,
presumably Ralph. On the same page
are these words:
’Ti# w'lh pleasure I Indite
A page to the man of might—
-1 he man of brass, the inau of gull,
in truth lie doth surpass them all.
For pure, unadulterated, admantine,
pre-historic, antediluvian, Druid like
cheek :
Oh, mini of Tuscaloosa,
1 would a word with thee,
Meet me in the gleaming
By the deadly upa tree.
Opie P. Read, of the Arkansas Travel
ler, writes on a page, gaudy with a pic
ture of a bird, flying towards a nest:
Such pictures a line fr: m Lougfellow’a *ng
gest—
“There are no birds in last year’s neat.”
In the upper left-hand corner of the
page he has rudely sketched a demijohn
and labeled it “ Arkansaw’s Coat of Arms.”
The following is another tribute:
A modi*i*i young inau from Tuscaloosa,
In Little Hock got full of booze, aah,
Altli ugh he seemed meek
He exhibited cheek
When he s ild to the “cop” “Turn me loose,
sail ”
But the policeman was up to that ruse, sab,
Bo he clubbed the young man full of juice,
sail,
Till he threw up his paw—
Cried: “You’ve broken my jaw;
In fact, you have knocked a tusk loose sahl"
Upon the side of this page is endorsed
in red ink: “If the wretch who perpetra
ted this outrage were known, by my hali
dame he would suffer.” The author had
made a foot-note: “I’m afraid to sign for
fear of consequences.”
Burdette, of the Burlington Hawkeye,
contributes this rounded couplet:
My tompllmtnts with all my soul,
To the bay window in your jowl.
Fitznoodle, of Puck, in a stiff, back
hand contributes his regards to the Au
tograph Fiend thus:
Tuscaloosa, the pride of the Union!
Your praise in my verse I would speak;
You may boast as your chiefest distinction
You’re the home of the man of the cheek.
J. Armory Knox, of Texas Siftings gives
a genuine gem as his return for the letter
of Mr. Ralph. He writes a round, even
hand, and spreads his signature all over
the bottom of the page. This is his tribute:
If you waut to succeed in this wicked world,
Auu attain to wealth and fame.
Thy grave kept green by a nation’s tears
Aud history trumpet thy uume;
Have nothing to do with the olden roads,
Go in for the latest gaff:
Apply to the Biftiugs stud'at once
By mail lor their autograph.
Shellman, of Siftings, keeps up the cir
cus, thus:
Oh, man of Tuscaloosa town, you are astrunge
enormity,
Go sell yourself to Baruum’s show and gain
by your deformity;
A face like yours is really odd; we eau’t find
words to speak of it,
For none but Jumbo e’er displayed, the equal
for the cheek of it.
Another Siftings man, W. M. Donnelly,
neatly suggests the commercial value of
his signature in these words:
l'bl# volumu—owned by James Q. Ralph
Wlio lives at Tuacaloosa —
He sends lo us, and '.kinks it sale,
We’ll write our name to amuse—a!
Bui we would much prelcr, O, Ralph
(W ho lives at Tuscaloosa)
That you .should use your autograph
On a cheque for a thousand or two, sa!
Ou which couditiou we pledge our word
To write our name like men, sir;
Tor they never were worth so much before,
And never will be again, sir!
The Arkansaw Traveller business man
ager makes even a more palpable hit in
reference to the financial worth of the
chirographic efforts by making out a bill
on one of the pages, “James C. Ralph, Dr.,
to Autographs of Traveler staff—ss,324.-
52.”
The book has many other productions,
some of which are really funny and many
flat. Ueorge W. Peck and M Quad sim
ply contribute their names. About the
most laughable hits in the volume are the
sentences, “Oh, that 1 were dead!” and
Oh, how 1 suffer !” from the office boys of
Puck and the Arkansaw Traveler res
pectivelyi The tome closes with the ad
vice from an unknown:
“Houcr ut.d fume from uo couditiou rise ;
Disw on your cheek—there’s where your for
tune lies.”
A rare sign—resign.
Barbers depend a great deal on cheek
to razor living.

The moment t litre is danger of impair
ment of the mind from exeseire nervous
exhaustion, or where there exists fore
bodirqgs of evil, a desire for solitude,
shunning and avoiding company, vertigo
and nervous debility, or when insanity
has already taken place, Pxkuna and
Manalin shouid be implicitly relied on.
But it is never well to wait so long before
treatment is commented. The early
symptoms are loss of strength, softness
of the muscles, dim or weak sight, pecu
liar expression of the face and eyes,
coated tongue, with impaired digestion ;
or in others, certain powers only are lost
while they are otherwise enjoying com
paratively good health. In all these P*.
■uxa and Manalix should at once be
taken.
Mrs. S. Smith, Hillsville, Lawrence
County, Pa., writes: “ Dr. S. B. Hart
maw & Cos., Columbus, O.: I have been a
great sufferer for ten years. It seemed as
though every organ in my body was dis
eased at one time or another. I had about
given up all hopes, when I commenced
taking Pkbuna and Manalin. I im
mediately began to improve, the soreness
and pain disappeared, strength gra lually
returned, and now I am as well as ever
in rny life, and I owe it all to your Pjeru-
HA and MaNAI.IN. I recommended it
to my friends and it gives better satisfac
tion than any other medicine I ever heard
of."
Miss Maria Roderick, Warren, Ohio,
•writes: “It is with pleasure and many
thanks that I write to you to tell you of
the great benefit I have derived from the
use of the Prkuna. I have used several
bottles of your PerU.va, and can safely
say it has done me a great deal of good.
I have improved ever since I commenced
its use.”
Mr. T. J. Webber, Plymouth, 0.,
writes : “ I am selling your Rerun A, and
having a good trade on it. It gives ex
cellent satisfaction.”
Mr. Thomas Acton, Brooklyn Village,
Cleveland, Ohio, says: “ I received a
severe wound in my foot by tramping on
a spike. It inflamed and was painful and
swollen. I had every reason to fear lock
jaw. Your simple suggestions as to local
applications and the taking of your Pb-
BONAand M a Halim were followed to the
letter, and, thanks to you, tnv foot is en
tirely well, and I am happy.**
