of the best citizens of Cobb county and
was greatly beloved by his large circle of

J. E. Hall lost a pocketbook in Carters

Col. T. VV. 11. Harris is now practicing

his profession.
The adjourned term of Bartow Supe

determined to give our county the benc

The Cartersville applicants for the po

Revenue for the Third Georgia Division”
are as earnest and long-faced as caterpil

expand!
The inhabitants of our North Georgia
burgh aro In very good health, we thank
you. They are also ready and waiting
for warm spring weather, widen is striv

us. Let it creep!
The visitors from Cartersville to the
New Orleans Exposition have all return

the highest terms. It is probable that
many others from our county will go be
fore the exposition closes.
Mr. E. Strickland, formerly of Rome,
has bought out Harris Best’s family gro

A physician in Cartersville last Mon
day, wrote out two preseiiptions on dif

courage zeal on the part of the liver of
his patient, who has not since been seen
or heard from. By this time, no doubt,
he (the patient) is sinking rapidly.
Last Thursday morning the Koine

its rear end. Tills sleeper was bound for
the Now Orleans Exposition and it con

Dr. L. K.Gwaltney, president of Shorter,
had them in charge.
The grandson of a celebrated poet has
been recently arrested for stealing chick
ens. The old man took to poetry, while
the grandson takes to poultry. If our
readers had as many poems thrust at
them as we have, they would begin to
believe that taking to poetry is about as
reprehensible as taking to poultry.
The last cold snap had a disastrous
and, at the same time, a very gratifying
effect on the spring bud poet. We are
tremblingly fearful that the balmy and
mellow-soft weather that we are now
having will resurrect a prolific crop of
them. Have some pity, O, ye spring
poets!
Rev. Dr. Griffith, ot South Carolina,
has been called to take charge of the
Presbyterian church here, lie is a man
of fine culture and deep piety, and we
trust and expect his labors, among us to
result in much and lasting good. He
will occupy the Presbyterian pulpit ev

they are exhibiting a spirit of enterprise
that is very commendable. We heartily
wish them success.

A Beautiful Residence
Is one of the nicest as well as one of the
most captivating things in the world. If
people could realize how much more re
spectable and comfortable they feel in a
neat and pretty house, they would strive
harder to have their dwellings to look
newer. Is your house old, or does it
look weather-beaten and dingy? If so,
have it painted. It will cost you but a
small sum, and not only will you receive
the full value of your money in the im
provement of the appearance of your
house, hut you will preserve it from the
weather and from the ravages of time.
Nothing does, and nothing can, pay so
well as good paint on your buildings We
know that a good deal of the painting
done these days is a cheat. Now, in
order to obviate the difficulty of being
swindled, you must buy the best paint
on the market —a paint that has stood all
the tests—that has been weighed in the
balance and not found wanting. The
Wadsworth, Martinez and Longman
Pure Paints, are prepared for immediate
use nml are guaranteed. The beauty
and durability of these paints are first
class and cannot he improved upon. To
the public, property owners and con
sumers of house paints, these paints are
confidently commended.* They are fur

Kockmart’s Row.
Wednesday of last week the hands at
Seiple’s liqie kiln, at Rookmart, wore
paid oft. Several of these hands were
negroes. Wednesday night, while a
large-sized carousal was In progress, two
of the negroes to quarrel and then
to fight. This precipitated the whole
crowd into a general battle. Pieces of
lime, rocks, knives, pistols, broken
chairs, table legs, pots, kettles, wool,
fragments of scalps from the heads of
the dusky antagonists, and fearful oaths
and threats, sailed around promiscuously
for some little time. Mitch Russell, a
negro well known in Cartersville, figured
largely in the affray. Friday night after
the battle Mitch died. He was brought
to Cartersville and buried on Saturday.
Another negro, whose name we failed to
get, was very seriously, if not fatally
wounded. We learn that Russell’s wife
denies that her husband was hurt in the
fight, and that she claims he died a nat
ural death. Others, however, say that he
was shot and died of his wounds. Such
difficulties as these are not likely to bene
fit to a great extent the community in
which they occur, and the participants
should be made to feel the heavy hand of
the law.

MOTHER’S
FRIEND!
This invaluable preparation
is truly a triumph of scien
tific skill, and no more ines
timable benefit was ever be
stowed on the mothers of the
world.
, iter- It not only shortens
the time of labor and lessens
the intensity of pain, but,
better than all, it greatly di-
Iminishes the danger to life
to both mother and child,
and leaves the mother in a
condition highly favorable to
speedy recovery, and far less
liable to flooding, convul
sions, and ether alarming
symptoms incident to linger
linf and painful labor. Its
truly wonderful efficacy in
this respect entitles the
j Mother’s Friend to be
I ranked, as one of the life
saving appliances given to
the world by the discoveries
of modern science.
From the nature of the
case, it will of course be un
derstood that wc cannot
publish certificates concern
ing this Remedy without
wounding the delicacy of the
writers. Yet we have hun
dreds of -such testimonials
on file, and no mother who
lies once used it will ever
again he without* it in her
time of trouble.

“Yes, yes,” man. “I see how it is.
Your mother inherited her disease, scrofula, and

“But my friend, said the man, “you got hold
