THURSDAY, OCTOBER 1, 1885.
CURRENT COMMENT.
George Satterfield lias returned from
the northern and eastern markets.
Next Tuesday is Bale day. Considera
ble property will he -old under the ham
mer.
The length of the legal advertisements
crowd out much prepared matter this
week.
Mr. 11. N. Hudson has moved into the
residenee lately occupied by Mr. Chas.
Barrett.
Mr. Hudson, at the livery stable, has a
g<Hd re-idenee, hi good locality, which he
will rent cheap.
Dr. Cason has been quite sick for the
past week, although, he is now able to
attend to his large and growing practice.
Clever lien Mountcaatle, the express
agent, has been on the sick list for a
week, being hardly able to attend to his
duties.
’Squire F. M. Shaw, who removed to
Atlanta several weeks ago, is much
pleaded with his new home, and says his
prospects are good.
Mr. James Stephens, from Talking
flock, Pickens county, is in town, look
ing out a suitable house to move into.
Wo welcome him as a citizen.
Mr. Uriah Stcpheqg will move into
town soon, occupying the Parrott place,
on Gilmer Street, Mrs. Parrott taking
up Chattanooga as lier future residence.
A strolling hand of gypsies have struck
o imp in Cartersville. They will remain
a few days, when they leave, not only
the town, but a few badly left embryo
horse-traders.
Rev. Sam Jones and Sam Small are
doing some line evangelical work in St.
Joseph, Mo., if the press dispatches
amount to anything. Thousands go out
to every service.
Cotton is rolling in quite lively and as
good (KPiees are paid here as anywhere.
Carte, sville has plenty of money to buy
all the cotton brought here while her
wan house facilities are ample.
'Hie editress is still unable to leave her
sick room, but with the energy that
marks her character, she has assisted us
this week as far as her strength would
allow. The Doctor is obliged to ho in
Atlanta, and her help was timely.
H I Murphy, the Atlanta detective, was
in town Monday. He is now in the
revenue service, and wo expect to hear
ot many arrests through his instrumen
tality. lie is sure of his bird when once
lie starts out after it.
Savannah News: “There is a growing
opinion that it was Rev. Sam .Tones who
brought brother Felton to the Democrat
ic fold. The doctor appears to lie thor
oughly converted.” If you want to get
fresh news go from home to get it.
Cards are out for the marriage of Miss
Sara I’arrott to Dr. Robert Pillow, of
Columbia, Tenn., the wedding to come
of! on Oct. 7th. 'The Doctor i* to he con
gratulated on his lovely prize in the
matrimonial lottery. Our best wishes
attend them.
Crawford and Hudson shipped a car
load of line horses to Dawson Monday.
Mr. Hudson will leave in a few days to
take charge of and place them on the
market there. These gentleman make
up a lively team, and it is exerutiatingly
hard to turn them down.
The town lias about settled to its nor
mal condition; the dynamiters have
about desisted ; the base ballist has about
closed up his checkered career for .the
season; but the appalling fact remains
that not a troupe has been booked for
our opera house. What we will do to
pass away the long winter evenings re
mains to be seen.
Rev. George S. Tunilin, who has been
so long and favorably known to our peo
ple, will soon remove to Marietta, where
he goes to take charge of the Baptist
church. Asa minister of the Gospel
and as a good citizen, Mr. Tumlin’s ab
sence will be felt in the county. Mari
etta should be congratulated on securing
such a good man as a citizen.
Rev. Dr. .1. and. 1). Rout ine, of Tallade
ga, Ala., will preach at the Baptist
church in this city on Sunday, Oct. 11th.
He will also conduct the prayer meeting
on Wednesday evening before that Sun-
day. All members of that church ami
the public generally arc earnestly invi
ted to come out ami hear this eloquent
preacher.
To-day is the fust day of October and
the beginning of the busy fall and win
ter season. The lively merchant will
now plant his advertisements and yank
his clerks up early in the morn, while
the man who does not believe in adver
tising will—well, he won’t have any
elcik, but will stroll down town late in
the day and worry his neighbors growl
ing about bard times.
Mr. J. M. Todd, an old citizen of this
plains who moved to Florida a few years
ago, lias returned and opened a stock of
groceries, near the courthouse. Mr.
Todd was doing very well in the “Land
of Flowers,” doing a good business, and
bis health was good. But in an evil
hour, the cruel Haines licked up all the
old gentleman’s possessions, hence his
removal back to his old home and friends.
The acquisition of Mademoiselle
(iintlon to Mrs. Brame's school has given
full proof to the fact that none but thor
oughly accomplished instructors should
ever Im* engaged in any department of
learning. In the teaching of the kin
dergarten system one cannot merely pass
through and casually inspect a well ap
pointed school, listen to a few brief lec
tures on the subject, but years of close
attention to the system, under the in
struct ion of thoroughly trained teachers,
Is absolute necessary to tit one for im
parting this highly important mode of
instruction. Mine. Goulon is. in a high
degree, suited to teaeli the kindergarten
system, having spent years under the in
struction of the best teachers.
Our type is new, our stock of paper is
large and complete, and the workman
ship will compare with any in this sec
tion, ami last, but not the least, there Is
the fact that our prices are the lowest.

It doos Henry Porter more good to get
a letter from his girl than any boy you
ever saw.
It. W. Satterfield will return home
Sunday from New York. Look out for
a bi ad.
P. L. Moon was over from Rome to
see his sick lady last Tuesday, who is

drummer of Baltimore, has been in the

now ready to weigh with his girl again.

ly moved to Florida, is on a short visit
toiler daughter, Mrs. J,G. Cannon, of
Stilesboro.

iting Miss Addle Davis, returned home
last week. She made many friends

CHARGED WITH WHISKY-SELLING
The parties charged with selling whis
ky on the sly, having been carried before
the mayor; one was bound over in the
sum of SIOO, one acquitted, and one,
waiving trial, was bound over in the sum
of SIOO. The Paulding county detective,
who was largely instrumental in work
ing up the eases, was also arrested and
placed under a S2OO bond for fornication
and carrying concealed weapons. This
detective was, as we are reliably informed,
brought here at the instigation of the city
council to ferret out the parties who have
been firing off dynamite cartridges lately,
but while here it was proposed he work
up the whisky cases also. lie claims to
have bought whisky from the parties
who have been carried before the mayor.
Much bad blood has been stirred up over
the matter, and it was feared by some that
trouble would lie had before the trial was
over. Luckily, everything passed of
quietly and now all is serene.
