Having successfully fought their way into

everything necessary for a day of school and
having created only slight less noise than a

“Daddy, we’re up.”
“Thanks. I was wondering about that,” I

The cost of the big barn
While talking with some
one, we got on the subject of
eating; actually, our topic for
the moment was over-eating.
I believe the gentleman with
whom I was conversing was
on track as he said, “The
more you eat, the more you
want.” He went on to express
his belief that excess food
stretches the stomach, gener
ating a desire for more and
more food at each meal. And,
if left unchecked, we know
the unwanted end result that
is usually achieved.
I believe that same con
cept applies to life and the
human desire for more and
more things. Just like food,
the more things one has the
more he wants. The result is
materialistic obesity. We usu
ally refer to this condition as
greed, a topic that Scripture
has much to warn us about.
We are directed in Colossians
3:5 to “Put to death, there
fore, whatever belongs to
your earthly nature: sexual
immorality, impurity, lust,
evil desires and greed, which
is idolatry” (NIV). And in
Ephesians 5:3 Paul says this:
"But among you there must
not be even a hint of sexual
immorality, or of any kind of
impurity, or of greed because
these are improper for God’s
holy people.”
Greed is not something
that afflicts only the rich;
even those with very little can
fall prey to this ugly tempta
tion. And as the verses cited
above demonstrate, Scripture
makes it abundantly clear that
greed has no place in the lives
of God’s people nor in His
Church, regardless of their fi
nancial or social status.
In Luke 12, Christ gives a
parable that demonstrates the
growing negative impact that
greed can have on an individ
ual. The story is about a rich
man whose farm made a
bumper grain crop, and rather
than share it with the poor or
use it somehow for the good
of others, he chose to attempt
to hoard it all up for himself.
You can read the parable in
Luke 12:16-21.
In this parable, two pow
erful questions are raised that
we need to consider. The first
comes from the man as he
asked, “What shall I do?”
(verse 17). With that we
should examine our own lives
Inspiration
and see what we are doing
with what God has so abun
dantly blessed us with. The
second question was raised by
God as He reminded the man
that his life was rapidly com
ing to an end: “Who will get
what you have prepared for
yourself?” (verse 20).
Do we really understand
that no matter how self-suffi
cient we might feel, we are
still absolutely dependent on
God, and He can choose at
any moment to end our lives?
This parable is not an in
dictment against building big
ger barns or bigger
businesses. But it is a somber
reminder that the bigger bam
cost the man in the parable
his soul. The real issue was
not about expanding his farm
ing operation, but it was the
condition of his heart that had
become cormpt with greed.
May we allow this parable to
remind us that the same tragic
end awaits us if we allow
greed to overtake us.
Listen to Christ’s sum
mary of His illustration re
garding the greedy man:
“This is how it will be with
anyone who stores up things
for himself but is not rich to
ward God” (verse 21).
Are you paying a huge
price for the greed that is con
suming your heart? Are you
rich toward God, or are you
banking selfishness? Ask
Him to show you how to store
up treasures that will last for
all eternity.
