Rebels dominate opposition on the courts
by Brad Christian
Getting back into the swing
of things after the holiday
break, the Turner County
Rebels and Lady Rebels had
three games last week, with
two region games taking place
in Ashburn before closing up
the week by traveling up 1-75
to take on Crisp County.
Telfair County made the trip
west from McRae on Tuesday.
The Lady Rebels wasted no
time in jumping all over the
Lady Trojans. Using their
quickness and speed against an
inferior opponent, they led 29-
9 at the half. With the game
fully in hand, head coach
Tasha Kimble was able to play
her entire squad en route to an
easy 53-19 victory. Mylashia
Yancey, who is averaging right
at 19 PPG, scored a game high
22 points.
In the boys game, the
Rebels were still missing the
majority of their varsity play
ers due to them finishing out
their two game suspensions
from the incident against
Lowndes. But that didn’t stop
the Rebels from jumping all
over their opponent. Playing
mostly freshman and sopho
mores, the Rebels built a com
manding 51-24 at the half. The
second half was more of the
same as the Rebels cruised to
an easy 86-44 victory. Jerry
Tukes took advantage of his
opportunity to score 16 points.
Freshman Tamarrion Terry
also played extensive minutes
and finished with a double
double (15 points and 11 re
bounds). Sophomore De Andre
Pierce closed out the double
digit scorers with 12 points.
Friday night saw Echols
County make the trip from
Statenville. Once again, the
Lady Rebels got off to a quick
start against an inferior oppo
nent as they jumped out to a
big 33-10 halftime lead. The
second half was a bit closer but
the outcome had long been de
cided as the Lady Rebels re
mained perfect in region play
with a 61-30 victory. Yancey
and Keyanna Dawson finished
with 19 points each. Xariah
Office also chipped in with 10
points.
The boys game featured a
full Rebel varsity squad for the
first time since December 28th.
Taking advantage of their
depth, the Rebels raced to a 54-
lb lead at the half. Every
player on the varsity played in
the second half en route to a
dominating 87-32 victory.
Shaquille Baldwin finished
with a game high 19 points. 14
different Rebels scored
throughout the game.
Saturday marked the first
time the Rebels and Lady
Rebels had left the friendly
confines of Ashburn since De
cember 21st and it promised to
be a challenge as they took on
AAAA Crisp County. The
Lady Rebels came out hot, as
has been the case of late, and
led 22-14 at the half. But be
hind the low post play of UGA
commit Nasheema Oliver, the
Lady Cougars actually took a
brief lead in the fourth quarter.
But some clutch free throws
and strong defense down the
stretch allowed the Lady
Rebels to get the victory 40-37.
Yancey finished with 13 points
and 10 rebounds. Taylor
Daniels more than held her
own against Oliver and fin
ished with 11 points.
The boys game was very
sluggish in the first half. Both
teams were sloppy and the
Cougars went into the half
with a 21-20 lead. The second
half was a back and forth affair
in which both teams saw spurts
at various spot. In the fourth
quarter alone, both teams had
five point leads. But down the
stretch, the Rebels were able to
make the necessary plays and
escape with a 60-56 victory.
Antonio Graddic led the way
with 18 points and 10 re
bounds. Iman Holley finished
with 12 points while Baldwin
had 11.
With the victories, both
squads improved to 14-2 over
all on the season. The most re
cent power rankings had the
Lady Rebels ranked 3rd and
the Rebels rated 6th.
After a Tuesday home game
against AAAAA Northside
Warner Robins, the teams will
travel to Lakeland to take on
region foe Lanier County on
Lriday before traveling to Por
tal on Saturday.

Rebels take 4th place in Duals tourney in Commerce
by Jason Minshew
This past weekend, the
Turner County High school
wrestling team competed at
state duals.
Their first match went down
to the wire with the Rebels
pulling out a 37-36 victory
over Mt. Zion. That put them
in semis against Commerce.
Commerce is a powerhouse
from north Georgia and won
easily.
Commerce would go on to
win the state single A Duals.
Having lost Lriday against
Commerce, that put the Rebels
in the consolation semis
against Treutlen Co. where the
Rebels won 40-36. It was a
tough battle for the Rebels as
two wrestlers were disqualified
for the tournament after the
Commerce match.
Coach Alfau had to shift a
couple of wrestlers around to
make up for the missing
wrestlers. Coach Alfau had
someone to fill one of the
classes but not in the other.
After defeating Treutlen,
Turner faced Gordon Lee (last
years champion) and lost
54-28 to settle for 4th
place in the state.
Coach Alfau had a
goal to make it to the top
four and they accom
plished that goal. Now he
and the wrestlers want to
improve on the fourth place
finish next season. The two
wrestlers who
were disquali
fied will have
to also sit
WRESTLING
other match.
Coach Alfau said of the dis
qualified players, “It was un
fortunate, decisions were made
on their part that definitely hurt
the team. Both young men re
alized how that effected every
one after the fact, both will
learn from it and grow from it
and that’s ah you can hope for.
Anytime you have a crisis like
that where major contribu
tors get disqualified it
creates opportunities
for others to step in
and step up.
“We had guys
come into the line up
and play specific
roles in order for us
TCMS headed into championships
to place, those are the things
that make us a solid program”
After the loss to Commerce,
Coach Alfau said the wrestlers
had to refocus the group for the
next opponent.
He said, “Losses like that
you have to use as a learning
experience but also put it be
hind you. The goal is to look
at the competition ahead of
you not behind, we were able
to do that”
Now that team duals is out
of the way, next up is Area Tra
ditional. Wrestlers will have a
chance to advance to state
again, but it will be individu
ally now.”
Lrom this point on the goal
is to continue to build. Each
athlete has to make adjust
ments and fix some things and
come in everyday with a per
sonal goal to get better. We will
continue to do what we’ve
done and what has made us
successful, you can’t get away
from what works. My goal as a
coach is to prepare them and to
do what I need to in order to
qualify every weight class,”
Alfau stated.
He is looking forward to
senior night and hopes the
community will come out and
support the wrestlers. Senior
night will be Jan. 21.
