The people of the south know
that the negro is unfitted for the
holding ot office and that bis eleva
tion to positions of honor is not
healthy either for him or for the
white people wilh whom he has to
do. The people of the north pre
tend to recognize him otherwise
there are hundreds of positions
Washington and nothern parts
where he mignt find room without
placing them under our noses.
In view of the administration’s
many pledges of loyalty to the peo
ple of all the sections of this re
public it could be but consider
ed an inexcusable breach of faith for
the president to further inflict his
subjects south ot the Mason and
Dixon Line by negro appointments
to office.

The second inaugural of President
McKinley on Inst Monday was mark
ed by a grand display of military
features. Twenty six thousand sol
diers in the parade emphasize the
policy ot the present administration
of militant benevolence. Yet, with
all this pomp and display of power,
Mr. McKinley is represented as look
ing tired and worn with care. All
of these tilings do not free him from
the exactions of the persistant office
seeking army, demanding rewards
for their distinguished (?) services.
The Indiana Senate passed a bill
a few days ago which is designed to
limit divorces in that state. The
bill provides for the appointment of
a commission by the Governor to be
composed of two women, two physi
cians, of conceded ability and one at
torney of high standing. The com
mission is to give all applicants for
marriage license a physical exami
nation and a certificate of fitness for
entering the estate of matrimony
before parties are allowed to con
tract marriage.
