• Tire Search-Light. BAIN BRIDGE, M A KUH 23, 1901 Says a female lecturer: “The men hold the reins, h .t the women tell which way to drive.” When you are billions, use those famous little pills known asDeWitl’s Little Early •Risers to cleanse the liver and bowels. They never gripe. K. L. Hicks. Now the scientists tell us that wealth is a disease. Please tell ns where we can catch it.-—Macon County Citizen. The Detroit Free Press is respon sible for the statement that most of the members of the Hawaiian legis lature cannot speak even the Con gressional Record kind of English. Counterfeits of DeWitt’s Witch Hazel Salve are liable to cause blood poisoning. Leave them alone. The original has the name DoWitt’s up on the box and wrapper. It is harm less ami healing salve tor skin dis eases. Unequalled for piles. it, L. Hicks. The Methodist preacher who lie- seoehes Prijvldenc^ to send Chicago a political savior “bearing the white plume of stainless honor” evidently holds to the idea that nothing is im possible with God—even the making of a stainless politician. The South seems to be getting np toward the head of the calendar jn t ie United States senate, as in other things. There are Bally ’and Cul berson os Texas, Bate and Carmack of Tennessee, Bacon of Georgia, and Berry of Arkansas. Tlio roll call doesn't proceed far until these names are reached. Their promptness and their pleas ant effects made DeWitt’s Little Early Risers most popular little pills whereeyor they are known/ They are simply perfect for liver and bow el troubles It. Lp Hicks. It is not necessary that America should engage in wars of conquest or possess great armies and navies to convince the powers of Europe that there Is a Western hemisphere. They are coming to learn that the United B ates is on earth, and they are find ing it out, not by tie number of col onies we govern, but by the amount of manufactured goods we are Selling in tlio foreign markets. When we be gin to capture England’s locomotive trade it hurts John Bull worse than a we would steal or buy all the is lands in the Pacific ocean. Frank Connor,» negro politician, l a been appointed n member of the Pliilalielphia police force; and there ;is trouble in oonsoqnenae of. it. The ■white people object tdQiavliig a ne gro policeman on the beat m which, they live, so Connor lias been trans ferred several times In order to save Idm from insults and jtosstbly worse. Thu Pennsylvanians are always l> eased to have the President to ap- pjiut a negro to ho postmaster, in a Southern community, hat wheu a black man is given a public place among them they proceed at once to make it unpleasant for him. When Senator Raima was asked if the next Republican candidate for {.president was in sight ho said: “He may be in sight, b H he has not been -d -ignated bv the finger of destiny yet." By the way, asks the Cincin nati Enquire, who is or is to be the “Finger of Destiny?” Does Mr. Hanna expect to continue in that ca- }> oily? “Stuff and nousenso” was the language he used wheu question ed us to the talk of a third term for President McKinlev, but wise meu will not recklessly bet on what the present a-linuiistrgiiou managers may do. A Our I terra might not be as bad as an empire.—Albuuy Herald. Of course, the Anglomaniacs do not like the wav in which Senator Murgan talks about the Clayton Bul- wer treaty and the Nicaragua canal. No one expected that they would, b it, England having rejected the amended Hay Pauncefotc treat;’, what ave they going to do about it? Will they surrender to Great Britain? The contention by England that a treaty can not he broken except by consent of both high contracting par ties is erroneous. As has been point ed out by Senator Morgan and others, the Clayton-Bulwer treaty has been violated repeatedly by Great Britain, notably so by that government erect ing fortifications in Brazil and other points in South America. It is not, and has not been from that time, held to be binding on this country. It is true that Secretary Hay attempted to revive a dead thing by a supple mentary treaty, bat the senate promptly sq.elohed this shameless effort. The truth of the whole matter is that England does not want any ca nil built across the Isthmus at all, and in blocking the entyrpise by sub tle methods has had the co operation of such men as John Hay in this country. It would not suit the pur* poses'of England, because of trade considerations, to have this canal built. She now virtually controls the Suez canal and through it monop olizes trade that would to a vevy con- s dernble extent inexitably be defiect- el from present channels, to say nothing of the loss of prestige were this canal to be built and cwned and controlled by the United States. It has been suggested by some as noted by Senator Morgan, that Eng land would go to the extreme of war with this country rather than submit to the proposed competing canal, and her expenditure of huge sums in late years iu torts and fortification in British Columbia, in the islands of Jamaica, Trinidad and the Bermudas, would seem to lend color to the sug gestion. But there will be no war. England has about all she can take care of in South Africa, and with the Russian Bear growling aver affairs in China it is not likely that our cousins across the water will be after picking a quarrel with us. Senator Morgan talks plain, how ever, and says that if they want a fight they oau gel it. The canal must and will be dug. As-suggested by an exchange, “treaty or no treaty, diplomacy or no diplomacy, this gov eminent lias the right to Bpend its own money in its own way and for its own benefit without consulting any one, TUe ridiculous impudence of England in claiming a halt inter est in an enterprise into which she has put no money must be reseated.'* —Houston (Tex.) This is the second disastrous flic that has visited Newton within 12 mouths.
