A publishing Arm has just issued
a little rol me bearing the title
“Alirahain Lincoln; His Bonk.” It
is a facsimile of the only book Lin
coln ever wrote qr complied. It is
a i ordinary note book, old-fashioned,
green edged and bo nul in black
leather. It is in tde up of notes and
comments l»_, Lincoln upon contem
porary events. It contains many in
teresting passages, but the most im
portant is the following written long
lietore the war, as indicating the
natural and true sentiments of the
mm with regard to slavery:
“When Southern people tell ns
they are no more responsible foe slav
ery than we are, I acknowledge the
facs. When it is said tiiat the insti
tution exists, and that it is difficult
to gel rid of it, ill any satisfactory
way, lean understand and appreciate
the saying- I surely will not blame
them for not doing what I should not
know how to do myself. If all earth
ly power were given me I should not
know what to do as to the existing
institution. My Hrst impulse would
be to tree all the slayes and send
them to Liber:a—to their native land.
But a moment’s reflection would con
vinee me that whatever of high hope
(as I think there us) there may be in
this, in the long run, its sudden exe
cution is impossible. If they all
lauded there in a day they would all
perish in the next ten days, and there
is not surplus shipping and surplus
money enough in the world to carry
them there in many times ten days.
When then? Free them all and keep
them among us as underlings. Is it
q lie certain this betters their con
dition? I think I would not hold
one in slavery, at any rate; yet ^the
point is not clear cuo gh to me to
denounce people upon. What next?
Free them and make them politically
and socially our equals? My own
feelings would not admit of this, and
if mine would not we will know that
those of the great mass of white peo
ple will not. Whether this feeling
accords with justice and sound j dge-
tueul is not the sole question, if in
deed, it is any part of it. A univer
sal feeling, whether welLor ill found
ed, cannot, then, make them equals.
It does seem to me that systems of
gradual emancipation might be adop
ted; but for tlieir tardiness in this I
will not undertake to judge our
brethren of the South.”—Macon

& Cliett’s City
Filipinos have the Orientel gift of
oratory of the ornate, flowery kinds,
says the Washington Star. An il
lustration of this is contained in the
last, mail from Manilla. When about
a hundred Filipinos employed in the
ordinance department in that city
took the oath of allegiance to the
United Slates, the spokesman, Hugo
Ascuncion, delivered the following
patriotic address: “Filipinos: This
is the hour in which the light spreads
i self over the fields like a mantle of
gold; when the ancient trees, with
their clinging parasites, lazily move
teeir great crowns in the breath of
the early breeze; when the shrubs
greet the day with the delicious
alors of their flowers, o:i whose ten
drils tile dew has left at a pearl which
the sun turns into a beautiful gift
from a serene night of love; when
the birds raise, in concerted choir,
their hymn of praise; in short, all
nature salutes the father of life, the
luminous representation of the cre
ator of the world. Now that we have
had the happiness of being gathered
under the starry banner, do not doubt,
Filipinos, that the grand republic of
America is tlmt which will conduct
us, be it late or early, in the moral
and material good of these islands.
Therefore, you who have signed and
sworn your fealily to this grand na
tion, join with roe in crying: Long
I s vo the starry banuer! Long live o r
colonel! Long live our lieutenant!
Long live America!”

FIXI3U THE VALUE UP A KISS.
It is an extremely difficult matter
to fix the market value of a kiss. An
Indiana jury has j st awarded a ver
dict of $1,500 to a young lady who
had one tlolen from her. Of course
all experts will lestifiy that a stolen
kiss is far more valuable than one of
the ordinary sort. That may ac
count for this $1,500 valuation by a
gallant Hoosier State jury. ■
It is to be hoped, however, tliat
this will not be accepted as a prove-
dent. As such it wo dd be an ex
ceedingly costly matter to most of
the young fjlks. While a lover may
declare that one kiss is worth all the
treasures of the universe, and while,
on the other hand, there are a few
sour people who would not have a
kiss at any price, the average well-
balanced mail and woman do not
wish to have anv serious barrier,
such as a $1,500 verdict, acting as a
damper on the kiss market.
