Russell is taking s pleas School Closing. On Wednesday evening we attended the closing of the Whigham public school and we do not hesitate to pro. iinunee It one of the most enjoyable events of the kind we have ever attend, ed. The exercises began promptly at 8;3Q p. Hi., opening with a delightful song by the entire school, “Beautiful Isle'of Somewhere.” It would be unfair for us to cotnpli- mentany one or more of the recitations, when each did so well. The musical program, interspersing, was exceptional, ly tine and did much Credit to the direo tor of that department of the school. About 800 people were out to witness the proceedings and no doubt each must have felt gratified. The temporary stage erected for the occasion, was ample and was lighted by comfortable seats were arranged for the occasion. The affair througout was a success of which the officials should feel proud. This excellent and thriving school has been under the direction of Prof. N. E. Fertig as Principal with the fol lowing able Assistants. Asst. Miss Lucy May Fewellen v Primary Depart* rnent, Miss Ethel Terrell, music, Miss Colding Davis, all of whom will no doubt, be re-elected to their respective posit* ions. The Whigham school bears the repu tation of being one of the leading schools of the county, and from a standpoint of equipments is far ahead of any other school in the county with the exception of that of this city. They have an eu* rollmant of 100 pupils, many ot whom are boarders. Their school building aside from the grounds is estimated to be worth 18,000, including desks and fixtures. It is a live school and we never witnessed a more creditable exhibition than that of Wednesday night. iron) the Tbomasvllle Times of 21st Inst: Congressman Jim Gnggs, jolly and genial, stopped in town a lew hours Sun day evening eu route to Baiubridge. Few congressmen have made more reputa tion than Jim Griggs. He has proved an able, hard working and uon.-cientious representative of the people. Lucius Mitchell, who has been in jail iu Bain bridge for several mouths charged with killing a negro who lived in Cairo wbi.e returning from Baiubridge on the train, will be tried today in Baiubridge. Judge Hopkins and Harry Martin went over to Baiubridge tuat night, the first as au attorney, the latter us a witness. We at-e informed by one of Blake* ty’s leading tillitena that, there is a rumor floating in the air that the Central of Georgia Railway Company will build a branch toad from this city to St. Andrews Bay* Fla.* using the Flowers Bros. Lumber Company's road from here to Jakm in the pro posed road. There is no doubt of one thing, i. e.( if the road goes from here to St. Andrews as pioposed our uitiaens who are fond of the piscator ial sport and surf bathing will give it an extremely liberal patronage and the road would be a paying invest ment from the start, as it would tap a great forest ot pine timber on the route.—Blakely News. The report of the United States commissioners of education shows that the south has done a good part for the education of the negroes. The amount expended by the south ern states, including Delaware and Mrryland and West Virginia lor ne gro eduoation from 1869 to 1898 was $101,860,661, The state expend itures for white schools during the same period was $444,769,585. The per capita expended for white chit* dren in' 1897 8 was $4.25 and for colored children $2.27. It is to be remembered that a greater amount of money is needed for white educa tion for the higher grades, and that the school revenue is paid almost entirely by white taxpayers.—Nash ville Banner. The attendance during the past te.m has largely outgrown the present aucomoda, .lions provided by the building and the contemplated enlargements have now, becomeimperative. With the continued increase in the city’s population nud the growing popularity of the school through out the county, the trustees will no doubt meet these demands in time ler the opening of the next term. Lying across the bed he called Mrs. Peacock aud told her to pour some chlor oform on a handkerchief and apply it to his mouth aud uose iu the usual way. After some time, tiiidiug that the cloro- forrn had failed to have the desired ef fect, he called again for the cloroforui which Mrs. Peacock gave him as befot'e. after which she retired from the room, 1 as he had used it in like man-er on other occasions without harmful results. How ever, Mrs. Peacock returned to the room in a short while aud found the Dr. almost iu a lifeless condition. Seeing the situa.ion at a glance, she immediate ly gave the alarm and with the assistance of others proceeded to bring him back to life, at the same time summoning the assistance of Drs. Dr. Peacock says he had ou former occasions used much more chloroiorm than at this time, but its serious effect was due to his having tak en other remedies before taking it.
