Twenty-five big birds from the Florida ostrich farm have been sent to Saratoga and the branch farm opened there. B» Cornell is in charge of the exhibition, and has with him Headkeeper Campbell. Among the ostriches which have gone to Sarato- go are Oliver W., the pacing ostrich, which goes in- harness, and for this bird there have been twenty engage ments made to appear at state fairs and exhibitions. Oliver W. is one of the wonders of the race track, and is a great drawing card for state fairs» where he goes a mile paced by a man on horseback. Among the birds sent arc Beau Brummei), Grover Cleve land, Maj. McKinley, Joaunah, who has but one wing, the other having been kicked off in a fight with Beau Brutnmcll; Jim Corbett and several others, which were considered the biggest birds in the flock. Another consignment, which will be made in the near future, is to Bass Point, where twenty birds will be sent. With the birds go hatching outfits, and many young chicks will be incu bated in the North this year. Among the birds shippep were four chicks, which were batched out at Saratoga in the incubator last year. They arc known as High Rock, Vichy, Klssan- geti and Saratoga, and will no doubt be a great attraction at that resort this summer.—Savannah News. IT WAD HIS REAL. A German’scientist, having exam ined the contents bf the stomachs of oyer 5,000 crows, lias determined the character of the orow diet and found how largely tins is made up of farm a id garden products. Wheat, rye, its and barley were present in per cents ringing from 5 to 8, together with varying quantities of fruit and; garden vegetables. Crows fed on exclusive vegetable diet died within a short time, showing that they ab- s lately repuire animal food, which normally constitutes about 30 per cent, of their food. The auimals eaten included mice, insects, labbits, pheasants, small birds, frogs, snails and earth worths. In connection with the strenuous efforts now being made to suppress gambling frauds on the great ocean steamers, says the Baltimore Sun, someone has rucalled a story which -old Captain Judkins, of the Cunard Line—in his day the most famous of Atlantic captains—used to tell. i There were stringent rules against gambling on the Cuuarders, but there was another company that was most lenient in the matter. One day a hot game was in progress on one of the boats of the latter line- There were several lookers on, among them the ship’s captain, who had strolled in fov a moment. Another bystander noticed that one of the players, Mhile dealing, dealt himself cards from the bottom of the pack and fortified himself with four aces, shocked at the fraud, the bystander looked at the captain, but the cap tain gave no sign of haying seen the triok. Pulling him away from the table the bystander said:^ “Pld you see that captain?"-. “See wbat.? n ' was the retort. “Why, that fellow dealt himself four aces.” “Well, wasli’t it his deal ?” fclUIIT WAS HER TERROR. “I would cough nearly all night long,” writes Mrs. Chas. Applegate, of Alexandria, Ind., “and could hard ly get any sloed. Hicks. SCOTTISH PRIDE AND CARNEOIE’s MILLIONS. Several days ago we took occasion to say that Mr. Carnegies’ pleasure in accumulating bis vast fortune was far greater than his pleasure in dis tributing it is likely to be be. As far as we are informed not a single one of the English or Scottish papers or periodicals has expressed hearty appreciation and unqualified appro val of Mr. Carnegie’s act in endow ing the four‘great universities of. Scotland with a snm sufficient to en able them to make tuition free. The Review of the Week adopts a sneering tone in commenting upon the gift, and says it hopes Scottish pride will rise up against the invasion of the almighty dollar. It objects to tbe sons of the oldest families of Scotland getting an education at tbe expense of “an Amerioan iron mon gen.” It thinks that if the Carnegie gift is accepted some Chicago prok packer will want to buy up Oxford and Cambridge dictate the studies to be taught in those universities, or a Boss Croker will endeavor to get control of the London University with the view of introducing Tam many principles Into the politics of the British metropolis. It may be that the four universi- sities will accept Mr. Carnegie’s gift, but it is plain from what is appear ing in the public prints of England and Scotland that the friends of those universities are not everjoyed at the munificence of the American mil lionaire. The Scottish universities are in a very prosperous condition and have been for many years. The fees for the support of the professors have been paid freely, and tbe fact that it cost something to get a university education seemed to make such au education ail the more desirable. Al though the population of Scotland is very much smaller than that of Eng land tbe attendance at the Scottish universities has, at times, been larger than that at the great English univer sities. The Scottish universities have not complained of a lack of means to meet the demands of their profes sors. No doubt they would like to have the means for increasing facili ties for teacing—for new buildings and for scientific experiment—but they have not been asking for en dowments so as to relieve students from thp v p{iyj^ent-juf tuition fees, Probably they feel that if tuition were 1 made fi'Sethero would be a fal ling off in the number of students— that they would get the dry rot, as it were, and would gradually fall into decay. No doubt Mr. Carnegie’s inten tions are good, though it mav be that in making hie gift he adopted the plan that promised to keep alive his memory longest. Now, however, finding that his plau is not well re ceived, he may so change it as to leave it to the universities themselves as to how the money shall be spent. No doubt there would be no criticism of his gift if be were to adoj t that course. If he does not want to do that, let him distribute his money in this country where he accumulated it. Scotland has no claim on him or his fortune, and apparently doesn’t care yery much for either.
