The May number of the Georgian, published by the University of Geor gia Literary Club, contains a highly interesting article from the pen of Ralph Graves, one of the bright boys from our city. The sub jest contri tin ted by the writer is the Georgia pine and the manner in which he deals with it would be highly creditable to one of mature years. He describes very minutely and accurately the uses to which this most valuable tree is applied and .the.varjQus industrial processes through which its many products undergo for the uses of mandkind. To one not familiar with this sonree of South Georgia’s wealth the information imported by the ar- tiole must be valuable indeed. He deolnva that the main purpose of his article is to show the evils of wasteful turpentine fsrming,” and this he does most admirably. After carrying out the purpose of the arliole in a very pleasing style, the writer laments the w anton des truction as practiced in the following passages: Thus the magnificent forests are passing away, and unless some active measures are taken, in the near fu ture, the same conditions will exist in South Georgia that exist in Vir ginia to-day. The present operators care not for the future generations, but are working the young and the old"trees alike,in this manper boxing trees that are not able to sthnd any thing nearly so severe. The condit ions are sueli that there is little hope of a new forest springing up, for the pine, after six years of growth, is only four five to seven inches high and most of its energy has been ex pended in sending down its tap root. As great herds of cattle, goats, siieep and swine are allowed to browse at will oyer the forest land, the young pinesjwe trampled under or eapeu or rooted up.” The warning ought to attract the attention of ail concerned and effect the preservation of not only a source oLwealth but of health and comfort for the future generations.
