There is no way of denying that we are without that protection which we might easily have with modern appliances. Some time or some time or other it will be unnecessary to write this article, wheu a fire, a sure enough fire has demonstrated that we cannot fight, fire effectually in the old way. Should either of the new hotels catch on fire and the flames gain headway, we doubt seriously if the Baiubridge fire department, equipped ns at pres ent, would be able to bundle the flames. Baiubridge has no more buildings to spare and we hope that an early day may see added to our water works a first-class fire apara- tus. At the Presbyterian church this week an interesting series of meet ings have been in progress, begin ning on Sunday naming and ending on Wednesday night. The meetings were conducted by Rev. W. S. Tuck er of Americas, a minister of rare gifts, and wonderful power as preach er of the gospel. All those fortu nate enough to hear him were great ly benefitted by bis forceful man ner in presenting the word. The church during his shart stay here has taken on new life and energy. Th* membership have woke up lo a de termination to call a pastor at once and to complete their beautiful bouse of worship, the pride of the cougre- gration and a hamlsotjje ornament to our city. Mr. Tucker will probably visit the city again in the near for ture. Messrs W H Scott of this city and Mr Gus Mills of ’the Whigham dis trict, engaged in a personal difficulty iu the Congress Hall Saloon on Mon day last in which each of the gentle men were severely though not fatally stabbed. There are conflicting state ments as to the origin of the troubl* and we could not therefore learn who, if any one was to blame. Dr. Berry dressed Mr. Scott’s wounds while Dr. Chesnut dressed those of Mr Mills. Each Of the men are get ting along well at this time. Th# affair was deeply regretted by the friends of both parties. On Snuday night last near Cyrene two negroes, Sam Herd and William Byron, became engaged m a dispute which came near endiug fatally, m that Byron stabbed Herd in a num ber of places in his abdomen, arms and back. The trouble arose over authorities a fight their children had Sunday morning. It is said that Byron went to Herd’s house, called him out and proceeded lo carve him up, after a short parley of words. Byron has not been arrested. C. XX. GRXFFI2T, DEALER IN ALL KINDS OF HOMEMADE HARNESS As.ll Work XTwwtly and Fromptly Eaeao-vabad. REPAIRING A SPECIALTY.
