:. An Admirable Spirit.
A representative Inniy of negroes
appeared before the suffrage uom-
niittee of the Virginia constitutional
convention at Richmond the other
day and presented a petition which
read In part:
. “Every.un'pfejudic* I and fair-minded
man will coucede the fact that by vir
tue of superior .advantages and intelli
gence, the while man must rule and gov
ern thi- country, ami all that we task is
justice before the law. and an equal
chare* iu the raee of ife. We are pow
erless to demand, ami do not demand
anything, but we are very powerful to
nsk and beg that the right of franchi.-e
be not takeu from u». nor the doors of.
public schools closed against ns.
“We feel great pride in the prosperity
and peace ot our st.,te, the good feeling
that now exist* between the races and
are very grateful for the liberal support
given our schools by our white friends.
*We favor, higher tuxes for school pur
poses, longer terms, better teachers,bet
ter pay and compulsory education.
•‘We pray that the result may redound
to Virginia’s honor and glory, and that
she still may be able to lay just claim to
beiuir the foremost state in the union
The admirable spirit displayed in
the above is well worth the consider
ation ot negroes in all parts of the
country. More will be gained by
one petition ex; ressing such senti
ments and couched in such terms than
by a ibdtisanu “demands” and mceii
diary and fake charges such a* the
propositions one made recently to
the effect that the negroes contribute
more to the sci.'ool fund than Is ex
pended on their education.-—Macon
