Now a day* the track is too fast
for political “score downs,” and the j E. Swindell rc Co.

chance* of being flagged.
Alabama’s liew constitution will
forbid the iss.iing of free passes by
railn-ada to legislators. Now let
Alabama pass.
A merchant in an adjoining town
advertises “Honest Shoes" for sale.
'FI c r.egrQus of that community will
probably go it bare-footed.
According to the New York World
it is difficult to tell whether the man
with the black eye has been on all
excursion or umpiring a baseball
game.
Jack Winters, the fellow who re
cently robbed a California smelting
works of $280,(910, and subsequently
made confession, will probably find
things as not as summer.
A candidate may run under a full
iieud of steam ami not be eternally
popping off. In fact too many men
setthuir pop valves so low that the
steam escapes as fast as it generates.
Lei’s “harmonize” matters a little
in Booth Georgia. Mr.- Turner and
Mr. Estill should get together
and one of them drop out, as we
aren’t piggish euongh to elect both of
’em governor.
A wealthy Minnesotan who recent
ly died left the provision in his last
will and testament that his belongings
$450,000 in cash should be burned,
in order to prevent a scramble over
bis properly by relatives. To effect
this purpose an exchange thinks he
should have carried the dough along
with him.
According to the recent census re
turns the number of deaths in the
United States during the last period
of ten years has decreased nearly ten
percent from that of the previous
term. The further showing is made
that in 1890 the average age at death
was 31.1 y.-ars, while in 1900 it was
35.2 years.
An exchange says that the editor
of a newspaper has no business to
make mistakes; has no business to
even gel inything in Ins paper that
.people do not like. He ought to
know juet what would suit each in
dividual, or be ought to take each
item before it is published and let
the person whom it concerns censor
it. He has plenty of time to do all
this, and all he has to do is to hunt
news and clean rollers, set type
clean the floor, pen short items, Inis
tie for advertising, fold papers and
wrappers, talk to visitors and die-
trib ite type, read proof and correct
mistakes, d->dge the lulls and dun
dekiiquehts, and take cussing, and
tell the subscribers that he needs
some moucy.

This is a creditable showing. Four
teen of these large tax payers live in
Bainbridge, and is an assurance that
the city is getting in a position that
will enable it in the near future to
embark in industrial enterprises that
will bring increased wealth and pros
perity to our city.
There is no use dodging the ques
tion ol better public roads for Lfqca-
tur county and the sooner the. work
is begun the better for the county.
Good roads ar.i absolutely essential
to the material growth and develop
ment of the several seutionS arid the
nearer bringing together of town
and county. Good roads, good
schools and good churches are equal
necessities to every commitimy, and
the absence of either discredits the
enterprise of the citizenship of such
community. Let our people stand
out boldly for better roads, and then
we shall have them.
It appears that the several candi
dates for governor each have a spe
cialty upon which they are basing
their claims on the suffrage of the
people. For instance: Guerry rides
prohibition, while Estill runs ou
newspaper popularity. Pope Brown
is a farmer aud ex-head of the State
Agricultural Association, and of
course he should lie chosen, while
Mr. Turner declares, “I told you s)o.”
But some one asks: How about Ter
rell? Well, Joe is just a good ici-
low generally aud good looking be
sides. May be Joe runs pn Ins face.
Alabama negro ..republicans are

speaks their disfranchisement. It is
not probable that the article-will be
